November is American
Diabetes Month
Medical and dental professionals are very aware of the link between diabetes and
periodontal disease and it is time to get the word out to everyone.
People with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease than people without
diabetes, most likely because they are more susceptible to contracting infections. In fact,
periodontal disease is often considered the sixth most common complication of diabetes,
and those who do not have their diabetes under control are especially at risk. Moreover,
research has emerged that suggests that the relationship between periodontal disease and
diabetes goes both ways. Periodontal disease may make it more difficult for people who
have diabetes to control their blood sugar.
Studies involving patients with both periodontal disease and diabetes found that when
their periodontal infections were actively treated, the management of their diabetes
improved markedly making collaboration between the dental professional and physician
key in treatment and overall health of a patient with diabetes.
If you have diabetes or care for someone who does, please ask us any questions you
may have concerning treatment and health. Working as a part of a team with you and
your physician is important and we are always here to help.
