Architectural Masonry

Colour: Red & Whinstone
Colinwell Architectural Masonry is manufactured
from cement, specially selected graded aggregates,
an integral waterproofer and pigment. The
production method involves the compaction
of these materials under great pressure using
specialised block manufacturing equipment and
curing the resulting blocks in kilns with controlled
amounts of heat and steam. This process ensures
that the blocks are efflorescence free.
Authority
Colinwell Architectural Masonry is manufactured to
BS EN 771.3. Colinwell has achieved Quality Assurance
Accreditation under BS EN 9001.
Complying with BS EN 772.4 Solid, Cellular and Hollow
blocks have a Drying Shrinkage values of less than 0.04%.
Water absorption for all blocks is less than 6%.

standard units or, depending on quantity, manufactured
to the designers individual requirements.
Dimensions & Weights
Colinwell Masonry is available in two face sizes metric 440 x 215mm and modular metric 390 x
190mm. Details of work sizes and weights of blocks
are illustrated in this brochure. The co-ordinating size
is the space allocated for the block including mortar
joints and tolerances. The work size is that specified
for manufacture of the block subject to tolerances.
Weights are averages and may vary slightly.
Finish / Texture
Colinwell Masonry is available with five different surface
finishes - Smooth, Split Face, Split Fluted, Shotblasted
and Ground Face (Murazzo).
Density & Thermal
Conductivity
Average Density: 2100Kg/m3. Allowing a moisture
content of 5% externally and 3% internally; the k value
for Colinwell Masonry on each leaf of a cavity wall
would be 1.35W/mºC and 1.25W/mºC respectively.
Sound Insulation
The density of Colinwell Masonry gives the blocks
excellent sound reduction qualities. The average sound
reduction index over a range 100-3150 Hz based on
the Mass Law Principle for plain unplastered walls
is as follows:
Shape
Colinwell Masonry blocks are rectangular with sharp
arises. Solid blocks are unperforated. Cellular and hollow
blocks contain voids. Standard components and Specials
available are: Half blocks, Quoins/Cavity Closers, Squints,
Cills, Lintel and Bond-beam blocks.

Fire Resistance
Mortar / Laying
Colinwell Masonry blocks are non-combustible and will not
contribute to the spread of flame. For the period of Fire
Resistance for various types of blocks refer to our Technical
Department or to the Fire Resistance section of BS 5628
Part 3. White, Oatmeal, Salmon, Ochre, Cream, Green,
Sandstone, Bianca and Crema are manufactured using
aggregates categorized as Class 1. All other colours are
manufactured from aggregates categorised as Class 2
In normal conditions a 1:1:6 cement:lime:sand mortar
is suitable. It is recommended that the mortar be
waterproofed and tinted to compliment or contrast
with the blocks colour. Any surplus mortar should
be removed with a trowel immediately, otherwise
the face of the block may be permanently marked.
The joints should be compacted with a jointing tool,
taking care to give as consistent a finish as possible.
For best appearance we usually recommend pole/
bucket handle jointing. Blocks should also be built
at random from 3 cubes/bales in order to minimise
any possibility of a colour banding effect.
Applications
Colinwell Masonry can be used in the construction of
external and internal load bearing and non-load bearing
walls, including the inner and outer leaves of cavity
walls, party walls, partition walls and boundary walls.
They can be used below D.P.C. They can also be used as
reinforced masonry walls through incorporation of bed
joint reinforcement or placing reinforced concrete in
the cores of hollow blocks.
Shear Bond Strength
Shear Bond of Colinwell Masonry is 0.15N/mm2
in accordance with Annex C of BS EN 998.2.
Durability
The high quality of the blocks gives them an effective
indefinative life. In addition, all blocks are waterproofed
which besides aiding their resistance to rain helps
them retain their fresh, clean appearance. Blocks
are unaffected by frost.
Control / Movement Joints
As a general rule the spacing between control joints should
be between 6 and 10 metre intervals. These are guideline
figures and for specific recommendations we suggest
consultation with our Technical Department at design stage.

Handling and Storage
Care should be taken to avoid damage to surfaces; it
is desirable that the blocks should be off-loaded and
moved to laying position mechanically. They should
also be protected from rain and dirt.
The Architectural Masonry shall be cured by steam to give the
blocks efflorescence free performance characteristics, have a
maximum moisture movement of 0.15mm/m and comply
with BS EN 771-3 and BS 5628-1.
Mean compressive strength of all masonry blocks shall
be 10.5N/mm2
Water Absorption not to exceed 3% to 6%
Packing
Average K value shall be 1.28W/mºC
Blocks are packed in cubes with plastic covers and are
delivered and off-loaded by crane truck on contractors
prepared level, dry site. A deposit is charged on pallets
supplied by Colinwell, refundable on return.
Density shall be 2100kg/m3
Distribution and Supply
Size is to be: indicate 440mm x width (from options
listed below) x 215mm standard metric or 390mm x
width x 190mm modular metric
Obtainable direct from Colinwell - delivery to start
approximately three weeks from receipt of written
order and to an agreed programme.
Maintenance
When built Colinwell Masonry does not require
any initial surface treatment or maintenance apart
from occasional washing if desired. The appearance
of external walls built with Colinwell Masonry will
improve with age.

Paint Grade Block

Colinwell Paint Grade Block is an economical,
fire and noise resistant walling unit with a load
bearing capacity. It is ideal for use on internal
leaves of a cavity construction or external
cavity wall leaves when painted with a masonry
paint. It is also suitable for partition walls or
as a backup curtain walling on buildings from
domestic to industrial, commercial and even
elements of prestige projects.
Composition & Quality
Colinwell Paint Block is manufactured from a
carefully controlled mixture of aggregates and
cement in accordance with BS EN 771-3, and
meets the statutory requirements of the
relevant sections of The Buildings Regulations.

450 x 225mm range: 9.88 blocks per m2
400 x 200mm range: 12.5 blocks per m2
Compressive Strength
Standard strength for Colinwell Paint Grade Block
is 10.5N/mm2. Other strengths available on request.
Appearance
The method of manufacture provides for
dimensionally accurate units with sharp clean
arrises and low moisture absorbtion.
The sizes of aggregates selected for the
production of the blocks provides a texture
that is particularly suitable for painting.
As the blocks are a stock item consistency
of colour cannot be guaranteed.
Colour consistency can only be assured if
the blocks are ordered to be manufactured
in one production batch.

Air Permeability
The latest amendments to Part L (Conservation of Fuel
and Power) of the Building Regulations include a limit
on Air Permeability.
Colinwell Paint Grade Blocks, when used to construct
the internal leaf of the cavity wall of a building, add
significantly to the overall air tightness of the building.
This improves the thermal efficiency of the building and
ultimately contributes to minimising energy use.
Colinwell Paint Grade Blocks have been tested
independently by BISRA for Air Leakage and
return excellent results. Please contact our Technical
Department for copies of these certificates, if required.
