CA MPB ELL H A LL INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC P L AC E M E N T IN F OR M ATIO N ( GRAD E S 7- 8 ) JOIN IN THE FUN by signing up for an instrumental music “pullout” course (7th and 8th grade). Students involved in the Pullout Program spend 1 study hall session per week participating in their chosen discipline. Eighth graders may also sign up for an Instrumental Music Elective in addition to a Music Pullout. Beginning Band Ever wanted to learn to play an instrument? This is the course for you! Flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, and trumpet are offered in this class. During the first class meeting, students will have the opportunity to try out different instruments to decide on the right one. No musical experience necessary. Orchestra Woodwind, brass, and string players learn and perform exciting and fun classical, jazz, folk, and movie music for concerts, assemblies, chapels, and other special events. No audition necessary. Jazz Ensembles Saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, drum, and piano players rehearse and perform jazz charts and develop improvisational skills. Students will learn how to improvise, “comp,” and play jazz standards, as well as contemporary jazz repertoire. Audition required for guitar, bass, drum, and piano players. (See next page for details.) Steel PANdas Join this ensemble to experience the newest acoustic instrument of the 20th century - the steel pan! In this class you will learn how to play Caribbean music from Trinidad and Tobago, and Pop arrangements on Campbell Hall’s very own authentic steel pan instruments. In addition, students will learn a brief history about the culture and manufacturing associated with the instrument. This group will perform during a chapel and at the World Music Concert. Members of the group will receive a commemorative “Steel PANdas” Jersey customized with their name on the back. This semester-long elective is for 8th graders and meets during a regularly scheduled block. (No prior experience or musical knowledge is necessary.) World Drumming Ensemble Whether you’re an experienced drummer or have never picked up a pair of sticks, join this ensemble to learn about the culture, history, music, and instruments from West Africa, Cuba, and Brazil. During this course you will learn how to play traditional rhythms and songs using Campbell Hall’s extensive collection of authentic stick and hand drums from these regions. This group will perform in traditional drumming costumes during a chapel and at the World Music Concert. This year-long course is open to 7th graders as a pullout that meets once a week.
