Somerset Rural Life Museum – New Sessions in School
We have been successful in bidding for HLF funding to redevelop the Somerset Rural Life
Museum. The site will be closed during the academic year 2016-17. Happily, we are
bringing several of your favourite sessions out into your classrooms! So please make sure
you use us to support your teaching in school.
As part of the ‘Victorian Homes’ cooking session children will make bread and explore
butter making. In the laundry session students will be able to use Victorian tools as well as
dress in Victorian costume. Other popular sessions, such as Toys and the Christmas
session, will also be available in school.
Please contact us with any other requests. We’re always keen to work towards your
curriculum needs.
Bridgwater Brick and Tile Museum shows the local brick and tile making industry, plus
the only remaining kiln in Bridgwater. Interactive teaching sessions are available, including
‘Clay in Action’ for KS1 and 2. This engaging experience links with new National Curriculum

units such as materials (and science), homes in the past and (for Somerset schools) your
local history unit.

learning opportunities.
The Brick and Tile Museum in Bridgwater has a learning
area within the gallery and an accessible toilet.
TAKE ONE PROJECTS
Every year we will run at least one ‘Take One’ project.
For the academic year 2016-17 we will be running a Take One project at both the Museum
of Somerset and the Somerset Rural Life Museum.
‘Take One’ was started by the National Gallery and enables students to explore one
museum object in depth, resulting in many different types of work from different disciplines.
The project has the potential to be predominantly student led but is also highly flexible,
enabling teachers to adapt it to their style and practice.
All our Take One projects include a training day and an exhibition event at the museum
site(s). These events take place at a weekend and enable children to share their work with
both parents/carers and members of the public. Additional loan packs and resources are
5
available for Take One projects, and email updates will be sent out as projects are planned
and publicised.
To find out about the training day or resources for our Take One projects please contact
Lizzie Mee on [email protected].
The Somerset Heritage Centre in Taunton provides opportunities for teachers to access
research facilities and visit the Museum Loans for Learning store.
