Phantastic Nutrition News SCHOOL DISTRICT OF WEST DE PERE November 2015 American Diabetes Month Diabetes affects nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States. There are 2 different kinds of diabetes—type 1 and type 2. Diabetes is a disease which causes the sugar in your blood to reach higher levels than normal. Of the millions affect by diabetes, roughly 5% are diagnosed with type one. This form is commonly diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce any insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to turn your food into usable energy for your daily activities. People with type 1 diabetes treat the disease with injectable insulin. People with type 2 diabetes cannot properly use their insulin (known as insulin resistance). In the early stages of type 2 diabetes, the body will produce extra insulin, but over time the body isn’t able to keep up with the increased insulin needs. This form of diabetes is often treated with diet, exercise, and oral medications. Currently, there is no cure for diabetes, but it is possible to learn to manage the disease and live a long, healthy life. Consuming a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise may prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. This is yet another reason why it’s so important to be mindful of what we put in our bodies!
