By: David Diaz Olmec were one of the first major civilizations in Mexico. They lived in the modern day states of Veracruz and Tabasco. Squash, beans, manioc, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and maize were all staples of the Olmec diet. Olmec used the slash and burn technique to clear land for crops. It’s unclear if the Olmec traded for food, as no remains of foodstuffs not native to the region have been found at Olmec sites. Olmec traded luxury items such as obsidian, serpentine and animal skins. Olmec used cacao as currency. Little is known about the political and societal organization of the Olmec. Olmec religious activities were performed by a combination of rulers, full-time priests, and shamans.
