special edition of
Arena, created
to help you and your
family celebrate the
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
There’s lots going on in
Aldershot and Farnborough,
and this electronic magazine aims to bring you the
lowdown on key events taking place to celebrate this
special occasion.
Our What’s On pages list a selection of the many
Jubilee and Olympic-themed community events and
concerts happening over the next few weeks.
Victoria Day, on Saturday June 2, is set to be the
borough’s biggest event with a parade through the town,
the opening of the Jubilee bandstand in Princes Gardens
and a screening of a film showing Aldershot’s Coronation
celebrations in 1953.
Over in Farnborough, there’s the open air concert
at Knellwood War Memorial Home and many community
fun days to look forward to.
If you’re holding a street party, this issue includes
tips and advice on games, food and how to recycle
the rubbish afterwards.
The magazine is also packed with fascinating
photographs that show how people celebrated the Queen’s
Coronation in Aldershot and Farnborough in 1953.
I hope you enjoy this special edition of Arena, and have
time to enjoy some of the wonderful celebration events
taking place across the borough over the next few weeks.

The bandstand will be officially
opened at 12 noon on Saturday,

Earlier this year residents were invited to give
their views on the design of the bandstand.
The chosen design has a Victorian feel with a
contemporary twist, and will provide a large
performance space for local concert bands,
musicians and even market stalls. A time
capsule, put together by children from Talavera
Junior School in Aldershot, showing what life is
like in 2012, is buried underneath.
A series of summer concerts is being
planned, and a number of school bands from
Rushmoor’s twin towns are lined up to perform

Royal visit 15
The
Queen’s
visit to Aldershot
The Queen visited Aldershot
in 1963. She travelled by train
and there was a guard of
honour when she arrived
at Aldershot station.
During the visit, Her Majesty toured Miss
Daniell’s Soldiers’ Home in Barrack Road
and attended a service at the Royal Garrison
Church (which was commemorating its
centenary) where there was a march-past.
The royal party ate lunch at the Government
House Officers’ Mess, then visited the
Cambridge Military Hospital and the Mons
Officer Cadet School.
Members of the public lined the streets to
catch a glimpse of the Royal party passing by.
