There’s lots going on in Aldershot and Farnborough, and this electronic magazine aims to bring you the lowdown on key events taking place to celebrate this special occasion. Our What’s On pages list a selection of the many Jubilee and Olympic-themed community events and concerts happening over the next few weeks. Victoria Day, on Saturday June 2, is set to be the borough’s biggest event with a parade through the town, the opening of the Jubilee bandstand in Princes Gardens and a screening of a film showing Aldershot’s Coronation celebrations in 1953. Over in Farnborough, there’s the open air concert at Knellwood War Memorial Home and many community fun days to look forward to. If you’re holding a street party, this issue includes tips and advice on games, food and how to recycle the rubbish afterwards. The magazine is also packed with fascinating photographs that show how people celebrated the Queen’s Coronation in Aldershot and Farnborough in 1953. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002. Sunday 3 June ©John Swannell/Royal Househld/ Camera Press Thames River Pagent Up to a thousand boats decorated with bunting and Union flags will sail along a seven-mile stretch of the River Thames as part of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. Around 30,000 members of the public are set to take part in the pageant and a million people are expected to line the route to watch. Find out more about the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant at: www.thamesdiamondjubileepageant.org Monday 4 June The BBC Diamond Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC Radio 2 during the evening. The concert is being organised by the BBC and pop star Gary Barlow and is set to feature some of the biggest names from the worlds of music, dance and musical theatre. Jubilee Beacons A network of more than 4,000 beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, along with the Commonwealth and UK Overseas Territories. Beacons will be lit between 10pm and 10.30pm. Up to 10,000 members of the public, who won tickets in a national ballot, are set to watch the procession. At the palace there will be a balcony appearance and an RAF flypast. As part of the Victoria Day celebrations, we’ll be screening ‘Aldershot Celebrates the Coronation’, the original film made to show the town celebrating the Coronation of the Queen. We’ll show the film on the big screen in the Princes Hall on Victoria Day, Saturday 2 June, after the opening Find us on of the new bandstand. The 50 minute film shows the town as it was in 1953 – covered in bunting, flowers and Union flags to mark the special occasion. It also includes clips of many of the street parties that took place, the military celebrations and families gathering around the television to watch the Coronation itself. On Saturday 9 June, there will be free table football in the mall from 11am to 4pm. The popular Aldershot Garrison Show takes place at Queen’s Parade, Aldershot on Saturday 23 June. More than 20,000 people are expected to attend this year’s show, which marks Rushmoor’s celebration of Armed Forces Day and the contribution made by serving soldiers and their families, veterans and the cadets. As well stalls and exhibitors, a funfair and kids games, the show features community events and interactive army sports. The day ends with an arena show featuring top display teams including the Parachute Regiment Freefall Team ‘The Red Devils’ and Imps motorcycle display team. While it is too late register a new event with us in time for the Jubilee weekend, there’s still plenty of time to organise a smaller get-together with your friends and neighbours in your garden. The Big Lunch website has some recipe ideas including salads, pastries, pizzas and cakes. Jubilee decorations From union flags to colourful bunting, there are lots of ways to brighten up your street for a Jubilee celebration – you could even plant red, white and blue flowers and enter your garden into our Rushmoor in Bloom competition (see page 14 for more information). Jubilee recycling Don’t forget to recycle bottles and cans when you’re clearing up after your street party or Jubilee celebrations. Recycle your bottles and cans You can use your blue storage box or basket (or purple wheelie bin if you live in a flat) for all types and colours of glass bottles and jars (no lids). Cans and plastic bottles should be rinsed and put in your blue recycling bin. The local newspaper produced two special editions to mark the Queen’s Coronation. Here are some snippets from the issue published on Friday 5 June, 1953. • About 400 people took advantage of television facilities provided free at the Aldershot Wesley Hall and watched the Coronation processions www.rushmoor.gov.uk and service on Tuesday. The Grosvenor Road Methodist Church made the hall available and Sound Television installed the set free of charge. • Patients in Farnborough and Cove War Memorial Hospital saw the Coronation processions and service on three sets installed for the occasion by Smiths Radio. One set was in the Maternity Home and two in the Hospital. • Parents of children under school age resident in Farnborough who have not yet received Coronation souvenir mugs may obtain them from the Clerk’s Department, Town Hall, on production of the child’s ration book. Competitors in Oak Road, Farnborough, street party fancy dress competition were glad they chose the sunny Saturday for their party. • The prize for best-decorated street in Farnborough was won by Hindell Close. The oldest lady in the road accepted the plaque presented on behalf of the Coronation Committee by the Coronation Prince and Princess. A gift to the value of £5 is also to be given to the Road. • A film of the Farnborough Celebrations is being made this week by Mr E.P Gredington, a documentary photographer at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. Using his own equipment, he will film highlights of the week and the finished film, which will run for half an hour, will have the final 10 minutes in colour. Aldershot street parties as reported by the farnborough chronicle June 1953 Crimea Road Queen’s Road Upper Lysons Road and Alderman and Mrs CJ Porter 50 children attended the Vine Street were guests at the Crimea party, held in the West End Road party, where 116 children were given tea in Mr North’s garage. Each child received a two shilling piece. They presented the two oldest women in the road, Mrs Blake and Mrs Holloway, with canisters of tea, and the oldest man, Mr McAdam, with cigarettes. Mission, which was opened by Aldershot comedian, Arthur English. Councillor Brown gave 50 apples and 50 oranges and each child was presented with savings stamps worth 5s and a quarter pound of sweets or chocolate. A telegram from the Queen, thanking the children for their message of good wishes, was read out at the street party. 90 children had tea and were presented with a piece of Coronation crown. William Powell’s band played for dancing in the street until midnight. Kingsway Estate ‘Probably the biggest party’ took place at the children’s playground at the Kingsway estate. It was attended by 350 children from Kingsway, Sandford Road, Kings Road, Western Road and Pavilion Road. Arthur English opened the party. Farnborough Airshow Coronation events and activities in Aldershot included: • A Church Parade Service at the Royal Garrison Church of All Saints on Coronation Sunday, the 31st May, at 11am. According to the minute book: “This Church Parade was a fitting start to the Coronation Week and his Worship the Mayor had accepted the invitation on behalf of the Council: he hoped that as many members as possible would attend the service.” • The Council was allocated 11 seats for the Coronation Procession in London. Tickets cost £4 each and were to be paid for by the person attending the event. According to the minute book, the Mayor was unable to attend “owing to the number of engagements which he had during the week of the Coronation.” • Coronation Celebrations in Aldershot finished with a Drumhead Service at the Aldershot Recreation Ground at 3pm on Sunday 7 June. The Farnborough International Airshow takes place this summer, and will be open to the public on 14 and 15 July. To mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee there will be a special patriotic flying display as well as themed activities and a dedicated family arena with thrill rides and interactive exhibits. This year there will also be limited public tickets for a Jubilee Day on 13 July, where the public will have access to four trade exhibition halls. Just put the bag on the bin lid on collection da y. www.rushmoor.gov.uk Grow red, Aldershot’s Jubilee bandstand The bandstand will be officially opened at 12 noon on Saturday, 2 June as part of the town’s Victoria Day celebrations. Earlier this year residents were invited to give their views on the design of the bandstand. The chosen design has a Victorian feel with a contemporary twist, and will provide a large performance space for local concert bands, musicians and even market stalls. A time capsule, put together by children from Talavera Junior School in Aldershot, showing what life is like in 2012, is buried underneath. A series of summer concerts is being planned, and a number of school bands from Rushmoor’s twin towns are lined up to perform in the bandstand as part of the National Bandstand Marathon on Sunday 9th September (www.bandtsandmarathon.org.uk) To find out more about the bandstand visit www.rushmoor.gov.uk/bandstand and blue! Help Farnborough and Aldershot look its best during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Olympic celebrations by taking part in Rushmoor in Bloom. The annual competition is open to everyone and is a great reason to spruce up your garden so it’s looking tip top in time for this summer’s special events. This year’s competition includes more than ten gardening categories, an allotment competition and separate classes for schools and nurseries. If you’re a keen gardener there’s still time to enter this year’s contest. Entry to the gardening competition is free and closes on 25 June. To register, fill in the form at www.rushmoor.gov.uk/ rushmoorinbloom Allotment holders are entered automatically. Judging for the gardening competition takes place between 9 and 18 July and allotments are visited in June and September. She travelled by train and there was a guard of honour when she arrived at Aldershot station. During the visit, Her Majesty toured Miss Daniell’s Soldiers’ Home in Barrack Road and attended a service at the Royal Garrison Church (which was commemorating its centenary) where there was a march-past. The royal party ate lunch at the Government House Officers’ Mess, then visited the Cambridge Military Hospital and the Mons Officer Cadet School. Members of the public lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the Royal party passing by.
