More than 150 Tons of Material Collected at the
Special Collection Event for Old Electronics at All Guzzo Cinemas
Brossard, May 19, 2015 – Close to 5,000 citizens of the Greater Montreal area took part in the
special collection event organized by the Electronic Products Recycling Association of Québec
(EPRA-Québec) on May 16 and 17.
This collection event, which was held simultaneously in the parking lots of all 10 Guzzo Cinemas
in Montréal, Greenfield Park, Longueuil, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Sainte-Thérèse, Laval,
Terrebonne and Deux-Montagnes, has helped to divert from landfills more than 150 metric tons
of old electronics, that’s roughly the weight of 30 elephants!
“Thumbs up to all those who took the time to come by! Participation in this event has far
exceeded our expectations,” says Dominique Levesque, EPRA-Québec’s Executive Director. “We
are pleased to see that more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of
dropping off their old electronics at the right place to ensure that they are handled in a safe,
secure and environmentally sound manner. We are very proud of the results. It was quite a
challenge to organize a simultaneous event for 10 collection sites, but it was worth it,” adds Ms.
Levesque. EPRA-Québec reminds the population that they can recycle their old electronics all
year round by bringing them to one of the 800 authorized drop-off points across Québec,
including numerous municipal ecocentres, many retailers and other organizations and
businesses.
EPRA-Québec took charge of all electronic products collected during the event and directed
them to recycling companies that are approved and in compliance with Canadian standards.
These will be processed in an environmentally respectful way while minimizing risks to health
and occupational safety. Once the products are dismantled, their component materials, such as
metals, plastics and glass, are sorted, recovered, processed and reused to manufacture new
products, therefore preserving our non-renewable natural resources.
“We thank Guzzo Cinemas as well as everyone who worked on and behind the scenes to make
this event a big success,” concludes Ms. Levesque.
