April marked the start of Terrence Egan, CFRE, as the FHN
Foundation’s executive director. A Freeport native and graduate of
Freeport High School and Northern Illinois University, he brings a
wealth of knowledge to the job, with experience at the United Way
and Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Terry is an avid
swimmer and open-water racer around the country…and is thrilled to be
working “back home.”

Lending a helping hand
It’s a simple concept that generates profound results. It’s something at
which our community excels. And it’s the primary purpose of the FHN
Foundation. As our mission clearly states, we exist to unite people and
resources in ways that result in exceptional healthcare today and into the
future. Our helping hand turns your gifts into a lasting legacy.
Examples abound. FHN’s recent eICU® addition to the hospital’s intensive
care unit – along with the current Be Cancer Free campaign – are prime
examples of investments brought to fruition, all made possible thanks in
part to the generosity of our donors. These new capabilities bring leadingedge technologies that help improve treatment and save lives. What a
wonderful way to remember or honor a loved one, neighbor, or friend!

Hankies in their hands,
hospice in their hearts

at tears of joy and appreciation
when the inaugural Bonita L.
Shilling Scholarship was
awarded to Heidi Barry, an FHN
Hospice Certified Nurse Assistant
(CNA), who cared for and comforted
Bonita for over two years.
Lori Garkey, Bonita’s niece, brought
the hankies as mementoes of the
occasion. They had belonged to her
mother and her aunt, who was a
mainstay in Lori’s upbringing and
a strong advocate of hospice care.
In fact, she was so appreciative of her
hospice experience that she talked
in depth with her niece about a
fitting memorial.
According to Lori, a scholarship was
the perfect solution. Her aunt was
one of Hospice’s longest-term clients

and a huge supporter of
continuing education —
she had always loved school
and was the valedictorian
of her Orangeville High School
class of 1939. By combining the two
interests, the Shilling endowment
now honors Bonita’s memory by
creating a scholarship fund through
the FHN Foundation for employees
and volunteers of Hospice. Each year,
5% of the endowment will be given
to help recipients pay for higher or
continuing education.
Bonita may be gone, but her
quiet strength and
unassuming nature
will live on, lending
a hand of support
through her annual
scholarship.

breast cancer awareness

his year, FHN “gave a hand”
to breast cancer awareness —
thousands of hands, actually! A

Partners in Giving employee fundraising campaign purchased pink

program, played a key role in
enhancing FHN Memorial Hospital’s
Intensive Care Unit.

Robert Geller, MD, and his wife,
FHN Director of Risk Management
and Corporate Compliance, Karen
Geller, contributed funds to purchase
software enhancements that provide
a multi-view interface for the eICU®
program. The enhancement allows the
UW Health e-Care of Wisconsin team
in Madison to view the vital signs of
all FHN intensive care patients on one
screen at the same time, rather than
each patient’s vital signs individually,
round-the-clock.
The Gellers dedicated the software gift
to their grandsons, Jack and Lucas…
who have now learned by example the
importance of “a helping hand.”

New electric cart ensures
quick trips and careful delivery

Ferguson Cancer Center multiple
times each day. Thanks to a new
electric cart donation from the FHN
Foundation and its Partners in Giving
employee program, this process is now
swifter, safer, and more “seasonally
acceptable” for hard-working
volunteers!
The new zero-emission cart replaced
an older version that served well
for many years, but was iffy going
into another northwest Illinois
winter. Featuring a hard top and
fitted vinyl sides that protect drivers
and cargo from wind, snow, and
rain, the new vehicle is definitely a
welcome addition. Now, cancer center
volunteers can “go the extra mile”
confident that they can get from
Point A to Point B without a
breakdown or bad weather setback.
