Transcript Markup List
Markup is a method of marking events or occurrences within a transcript. By marking certain items, a
generalized formatting scheme can be incorporated, thereby enabling a unified singular formatted final
document regardless of what software the transcript was created in. Transcript markup also enables a
chronological Table of Contents to be generated automatically. At least one space must follow any
markup. This is necessary to enable a spell check program to view markups separately. Markup
notations can then be added to a spell check dictionary. Once completed transcripts are processed, the
markups will not be visible.
Please note that all dashed lines have now been replaced with solid underscored lines.
Care should be taken to ensure that capitalization is followed according to the samples provided

Quotation Markup (<Q> for “quotation” followed by a number - <Q1>, <Q2>,
<Q3>, <Q4>)
A quotation markup is necessary at the beginning of every paragraph in a quotation.
However, the markup of <Qoff> only needs to appear once at the very end of the entire
quotation.

If the quotation is Q&A material, use <Q> and <A> markups. If the quotation contains a
question followed by a speaker designation, use <QS> markup.
