Feb 8 - Hampton Primary School

From Sue
Wednesday February 8, 2017
The Twilight Carnival Management Team is now meeting
weekly and organisational details are being fine-tuned. The
team has a large number of parents who have generously
given up their time over a number of months to reflect on our
previous carnivals and consider the experience of local
schools to ensure that our carnival is the best that it can be!
There is considerable skill and much enthusiasm in the
management team, our carnival looks set to be very
successful and hopefully great fun for all.
We have our fingers crossed for fine weather on Friday 24 February. This event is held once every
two years and it is our major fundraiser. It is also an opportunity to support our school. Money
raised from the carnival will assist with covering the costs for the toilet refurbishment and to erect a
shade sail over the quadrangle area. Every family is asked to donate at least one hour of their time
at a stall or activity of their choice – more if you have multiple children at school. All children love
seeing their parents helping and it will also put your family in the draw for the chance to win a
Golden Ticket which will give them a tour of the carnival before anyone else!! We have hundreds of
volunteer hours to fill! Grab a friend and write your name down for a time slot. It won’t be all hard
work but rather a fun, social night with heaps of laughs and community spirit.
If you have littlies, share the care with a friend. Maybe grandparents could lend a hand? They will
enjoy our Carnival too. Please find a way to contribute – it will be fun!
How to sign up: Go online to volunteer:
 Click on www.schoolinterviews.com.au
 Enter code: chzP8
Follow the prompts to choose your volunteer times.
A few reminders:

The before and after school program will operate from the hall as usual on Friday 24 February

Bring along small change to assist with purchases on the night

Think about walking to the carnival – Ludstone Street will be closed off from 11am. This will
mean significantly less congestion and fewer headaches on the day

Friday 24 February will be casual clothes day for the children, this will allow them to stay at
school and enter into the carnival atmosphere immediately




If possible have the children bring their snack and lunch in a disposable bag and in this
way, they won’t need their school bag on the Friday
Don’t forget to order your wrist band online (trybooking.com) for the rides up to and
including Sunday 19 February, there are some savings to be made
The Hampton Idol auditions have reached fever pitch so this is sure to be a great hit at
the carnival.
Extended family, friends and neighbours are most welcome to attend.
The OVAL PRECINCT will house inflatables and Community Events
with so much to choose from!
Three HUGE inflatables suitable for all ages:– the Jungle Maze,
Fantasy Island and Mega Xtreme.
If you are looking for activities to participate in, the school oval is
where to go:
BUBBLE SOCCER – Get a group of friends together and have lots
of fun and laughter!
GECKO SPORTS – Obstacle Course with cargo net, Basketball
Hotshots and Tug-O-War – something for everyone.
The LUDSTONE STREET PRECINCT will be abuzz with a variety
of rides and amusements.
Cha Cha and the Bungee Tramps (twice as many this Carnival – 8
kids can have a go at once!) are some of the old favourites
returning, with NEW RIDES Music Trip (for the daring ones!) and the
Atomic Drop Slide.
The Teachers’ carpark will be the place to go with younger children
– Merry-Go-Round, Chair-O-Plane and the Animal Farm are located
here.
Tug-O-War “clashes” will be held all night – children vs teachers; one Grade against the other.
Who will be the champion at the end of the day?
COMPETITIONS – all raising funds for HPS (gold coin donations). Make sure you bring lots of
change along on the night (and we will have a Change Booth located at the Information
Marquee).

Leadership
All year 6s will have numerous opportunities to be involved in leadership this year, some of these
include:

having a Prep buddy to encourage, support and guide

being invited to train as peacemakers

attending a leadership conference

organising some lunchtime activities and conducting lunchtime clubs

assisting with sports training for younger children

assisting in the front office at recess and lunchtimes

addressing whole school assemblies

organising and conducting fundraisers, etc.
Our Year 6 leaders will receive their badges at next week’s assembly at 3pm on Tuesday 14
February. Parents and family members are warmly invited to attend on this day. There will be an
afternoon tea for the leaders and their family members in the staffroom following the assembly.
School Council Elections
School Council elections will be held during February and March. All councillors except the
principal have a two year term of office. The principal is the executive officer of the council and
therefore has ongoing membership. Hampton has a council comprising 15 people: 8 parent
members and 5 Department of Education and Training (this includes the principal) and provision
to co-opt two community members. In order to ensure that school organisation has continuity and
important decisions are made as required, half the council turns over each year. This means the
school would always have some councillors who have at least one year’s experience on council.
We have vacancies for four parents, two co-opted members and two teachers (or Department of
Education and Training members). School Council meets once a month with the meetings going
for approximately two hours. In addition, school councillors are asked to serve on one committee.
Committees usually average one meeting a month and are required to report to council regularly.
We have the following committees in operation: Buildings and Grounds, Education, Finance,
Fundraising, Grants and Canteen. From time to time additional working parties are established as
required. For parents who have an interest in education generally and a commitment to
Hampton, we would welcome your input on council.
Nomination forms are available from the school office.
The following councillors’ terms expire in March 2017:
Brett Anquetil, Fiona Loveland, Jane Wright, Nicole Jacobs, Tim Bernau and John Painter.
The remaining councillors’ terms expire in March 2018:
James Buckley, Jamie Smart, Demet Kahali, Ian Hart, Lisa Logue and Simone Tickell.
If any parents have queries about the process, I would be happy to discuss these with them.
Please note the timeline below:
Thursday 9 February
Nominations open
Thursday 16 February
Nominations close
Monday 20 February
Distribute ballot papers (if required)
Monday 6 March
Ballot closes
Wednesday 8 March
New council members announced.
If any parents have queries about the process, I would be happy to discuss these with them.
Parent Information Evenings
The following days and time have been set for the parent information sessions in the week
following the Twilight Carnival which will involve parents of children in Years 1-6. (Prep teachers
are conducting assessments of students on Wednesdays for the next few weeks; they will be
conducting pastoral care interviews with parents, however specific details will be sent to parents
shortly).

The meetings will commence promptly, we anticipate most meetings will go for an hour. Parents
will have the opportunity to receive a general outline of expectations, curriculum and special
activities including camps, excursions, swimming etc., from the teachers and also to ask
questions that may be of interest. The meetings are not intended to be a parent teacher
interview reporting on student progress – these discussions will be conducted early in Term 2.
*The parents of children in Year 5 and 6 will meet as a group for the first 30 minutes and then
separate into year levels for the latter part of the session.
Website misuse
In the past few weeks, a small number of schools have reported inappropriate content uploaded
to their school's website from an external organisation. Unfortunately our school website has
been hacked on two occasions over the weekend. Victoria Police is currently investigating these
incidents. Thank you to those parents who reported the matter to me so promptly on Sunday.
What makes a really effective teacher?
Year 2s explored this topic with students as part of the Start Up program last week. The children
clearly enjoyed the opportunity to share their thoughts:
Lucy Ma from 2C

They give us challenges and hard work

They give us consequences when we do the wrong thing

They are kind, helpful, funny, positive and caring

My teacher is helpful, funny and caring; she is kind, not strict.


Sebastien Lynch from 2C
They give us interesting work, like new work which can be times tables. A good teacher
will let me make mistakes
A good teacher will push me in maths, especially my times tables
They will be empathetic
They will let me explore.
Lily Theuma from 2C

She will give us help when we need her

A good teacher will help us spell and look at us when she is talking to us
Charlie Elliott from 2C

Listens to us

Gives us feedback

Tells us to do HQW (high quality work)
Izzy Crenner from 2C

An effective teacher will correct me when I make mistakes and will say it nicely

They will smile and wave back when I do it to them and they should look like they mean it

They will let you have fun with the things you are doing and let you pick your own

They will say, “Nice try! How about if I help you next time!”
Adam Barlow from 2C

A really good teacher will give us new, exciting and hard work

They will make sure we do high quality work

They will let you make mistakes.
National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
The NAPLAN tests will be administered for all children Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 on Tuesday 9 May,
Wednesday 10 May and Thursday 11 May, 2017. The NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge
and skills in writing, reading, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and
numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents and teachers which
can be used to improve student achievement.
For more information about the tests, please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the
NAPLAN website at www.nap.edu.au
For parents of children in Years 3 and 5 specifically, please note the dates in your diary and where
possible ensure that appointments for your children are not scheduled on these days. It is
important to have full attendance on these days where practicable, in this way we then have
greater reliability in analysing results and drawing conclusions about student achievement based
on aggregate data. The results do provide useful information on individual student progress and
on the school’s achievement and standard of performance relative to others schools with similar
family backgrounds and enrolment.
Citizenship Awards
Congratulations go to the following students who received a citizenship award at assembly
yesterday:


Estelle Verner from 6B, for demonstrating a patient and thoughtful approach to school,
readily displaying initiative and consideration for others
Alice Wolfenden from 6B, for demonstrating a positive attitude to peers and consistently
displaying kindness, thoughtfulness and cooperation.
Assembly Performance
Well done 5A who led the singing of the National Anthem at assembly yesterday.
The assembly performance featured an impressive
Chinese Dragon dance from Year 4s.
Mandarin classes have explored Chinese culture with
a specific focus on the Chinese New Year.
Yesterday the Year 4 students took part in a Dragon
Dance Workshop where they enjoyed the opportunity
to dance holding and supporting a wonderfully vivid
and quite spectacular looking dragon. The Dragon
Dance is a popular event during Chinese New Year.
It is performed by a team of dancers who manipulate
a long flexible figure of a dragon using poles
positioned at regular intervals along the length of the dragon. The dance team simulates the
imagined movements of this river spirit in a sinuous, undulating manner. Chinese dragons are a
symbol of China, and they are believed to bring good luck to people. Well done to: Ollie Smith,
Oliver Elliott, Jackson Follett, Cara Sharpe, Erin Sarman-Gozel and George Pidduck who led
the 4D students in performing the dragon dance at assembly. We wish Hampton teachers,
students, parents and members of our community a prosperous Year of the Rooster.

DOGS AT SCHOOL
A reminder to parents
that if you bring your
dog into the school
yard it must remain
leashed and under the
supervision of an adult
at all times.
Please do not leave
your dog tied up and
unattended.
School Notification – Important Health Message Reminder
Dear Parents,
Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly progressive allergic reaction that is
potentially life threatening. The most common food allergens in school
aged children are peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, cow’s milk, fish and
shellfish, wheat, soy and sesame.
There are a number of students in many classes who suffer from life
threatening allergies to insect bites / stings and various foods that can
cause anaphylaxis. It is important to understand that some children
can become seriously ill by eating or simply coming in contact with
these foods.
As a school, we are asking you to avoid sending nuts and nut products
within your child’s lunch or play lunch. We ask that this extends to
excursions and class parties when they arise. We appreciate that these
restrictions may cause problems for some parents as some children can
be fussy eaters, however the health and safety of all students must be
considered a priority for all of us.
All schools have a duty of care to each and every student. The key to
prevention of anaphylaxis is knowledge of students at risk, awareness
of triggers (allergens) and prevention of exposure to these.
The Victorian Government’s Anaphylaxis Guidelines (Ministerial order
706) came into effect in April 2014 and the Hampton Primary School
Anaphylaxis Policy can be accessed from our website for further
information.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the School
nurses.
