You can use books, the internet, experts, magazines or videos to obtain information. You want to learn everything you can about your project (question) so you can make an educated hypothesis (prediction) about the answer to your science project question. Here are some research questions you need to answer about your project. Remember you need to use 2 books and 1 internet source. 1. What is fungi (mold) ? ________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ 2. What does fungi (mold) need to grow? _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ 3. Where does fungi (mold) grow usually? ____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ 1 Hypothesis The hypothesis is where you make a prediction about your science fair project experiment. You look at your question and then make an educated guess/answer on what you think will happen. For example your question is: Where is the best place to grow fungi? So, you answer that question based on what you learned when you did your research. Write your hypothesis below. Based on my research I believe the best place to grow fungi is ______ __________________________ I believe this because__________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 2 Materials This is where you list every item you need to complete the science project/ experiment. _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ 3 Experiment (Procedure/ steps) This where you list each step of the experiment, make sure you list every step. If another person wants to recreate your experiment they need to be able to follow the steps you listed. Your project has 6 steps that you need to list. 1. Sprinkle a few drops of water on five slices of bread. Place a slice of bread in each of the five plastic bags. 2. ___________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 3. ___________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 4. ___________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 5. ___________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 6. ___________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 4 Data and Results Using the table below, sketch what each piece of bread looks like on each specific day. Days Bag A Bag B Bag C Bag D Bag E 1 2 3 4 5 5 Conclusion This is the part of the project where you look at your experiment and the data/ results and write 1-2 pages of what you learned from your experiment, you make conclusions of what you discovered. For our science project you will need to answer a few questions. Use complete sentences, with capitals and correct punctuation. 1. On which slice of bread did you observe the most fungi growth? ___________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ 2. What was the color of the fungus that grew on your bread? ______________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ 3. Where is the best place to store your bread in your house and explain why? _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ 3. Fungi is spread by spores, spores are tiny structures that float in the air. How do you think the fungi spores got on your bread if it was sealed in the plastic bag? _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ 6 Bibliography The bibliography is where you list all the resources that you used while completing your science fair project. I listed the science fair project book that I used to get this experiment for you. Please list your 2 books and 1 internet source that you used for your project. You could use and list more but must have the minimum 2 books and 1 internet source. My book I am listing does not count for your resources. 50 terrific science experiments Pam Walker - Elaine Wood - Janet Skiles - Instructional Fair – 1998 _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 7 _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 8 Journal The journal is the part of the science fair project where the scientist keeps their notes or journal entries of their thoughts during the science experiment/ project. Every time your child works on their science fair project have them make an entry in their journal. They can talk about what they did, what they are going to next, what they found out, something they want to find out, and anything else they want to write about, as long as it has to do with their science project/ experiment. The longer the experiment, the more journal entries you will have. Example journal entry: December 6, 2012 Today my teacher passed out the science fair packets. There are seven different experiments that I can choose to do. I think I would like to learn about where is the best place to grow fungi. I can’t wait to go to the store and buy my supplies. My mom said we might go on the weekend.
