Crop and Animal Hearths Map
Using the maps on pages 348 and 349 of your textbook, label the crop and animal hearths in the
world.
You DO need to have different colors for the different eras when these plants and animals were
domesticated.
Don’t forget TOADLS.
You do NOT need to put in the arrows of the diffusion patterns of the crops.
On the back of the map, answer the following questions. Some of them may be answered in the
text on the same pages as the maps.
A. What is a crop hearth?
B. What does it mean that a crop or animal is “domesticated?”
C. Give two reasons why there are more crop and animals hearths in Asia and Africa than in
other continents.
D. Why are some of the locations of crop hearths not specific?
E. What type of crops were domesticated earliest?
F. Why were very few animals domesticated in the Western Hemisphere?
G. How would the lack of domesticated animals in the Western Hemisphere affect the spread
of disease in that hemisphere (we’ll answer this one together in class).
