From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
This week I have made students aware of the amount of days they have been absent from school
this year. A letter has also been sent home today to each family outlining the number of absences
your child has had from school this year. We discussed that students must attend school every
school day under Queensland law unless there is an acceptable reason such as:
•
illness
•
doing work experience
•
competing in school sporting events.
If your child is going to be absent from school, you must let the school know why the absence has
occurred within two school days of their return. If possible, it is best to advise the school beforehand.
Avoid keeping your child away from school for reasons such as:
Birthdays, shopping, visiting family and friends, if they sleep in, looking after other children, minor
check ups or care, such as hair cuts.
Routine medical or other health appointments should be made either before or after school or during
the school holidays.
One or two days a week doesn’t seem like much but…
If your child
misses…
That equals…
Which is…
Over 13 years
of schooling
that’s…
1 day per fortnight
1 day per week
20 days per

120 days per

Which means
the best your
child might
perform is…
Equal to finishing in grade 11.
Equal to finishing in grade

Equal to finishing in grade 7
Equal to finishing in grade 4.
Establishing good rou nes around school can assist with regular school a endance. These include:
•
have a set me to go to bed
•
have a set me to get out of bed
•
have uniform and school bag ready the night before
•
have a set me for star ng and finishing breakfast
•
set a me for daily homework ac vi es
•
speak about school posi vely
•
send your child to school every school day including their birthday and the last day of term
from Prep.
If you are experiencing difficulty in sending your child to school, contact the school principal for advice and support.

PE Session
Mr Brendan Mallyon is a PE teacher from the Gold Coast and is visiting our area next
week. He has kindly volunteered his time to conduct a special PE Session with all of our
students. Remember to set the alarm early as the session will take place before school,
starting at 8am on Monday, 1st September.
Book Week
Thank you Mrs Thomson for organising yet another fantastic Book Week! You have
showed such enthusiasm and our students thoroughly enjoyed the Book Week activities.
Here are some of our memories…
Ranger- “I liked it when we ate King Pig cake!”
Sam- “I liked King Pig, he was delicious!”
Nathan- “I liked how Mrs Thomson made all of the things in the library display based on
the books!”
Kai- “I liked how everyone dressed up in their favourite book character!”
Austin- “I liked coming dressed as my favourite characters!”
We are super excited to borrow out and start reading the Book Week books, there are
some great stories with beautifully illustrated pictures. Thank you again Mrs Thomson for
sharing your love of reading!
Misplaced items
After our cricket day working bee we have had a shovel misplaced. If you could check at
home in case it was accidently picked up after the event, we would greatly appreciate it.
The shovel is documented and when we are audited next term it needs to be accounted
for. If you have seen it around the school or know where it is please see Miss Franks or
Mrs Markey.
PJ and Sausage Sizzle Disco
Next Wednesday the 3rd of September, our Senior Students will host a disco and feast
on sausages. All funds raised on this day will go to support the 2016 School Camp. The
students are really looking forward to this event. Attached to the newsletter is a form to
assist with catering purposes. Please complete this form and return to the school office
before Tuesday 2nd September.
Under 8’s Day
Many thanks to the parents who have returned their Under 8’s Day form. This is an exciting event and we have been lucky enough to be invited. The students are going to have
a SUPER time at the Super Hero day! If you haven’t return your form to attend the day
then please send in to avoid your child missing this fun filled day! Students will only
need to bring their hat and drink bottle on the day as morning tea and a sausage sizzle
lunch will be provided.
Father’s Day
On Friday 5th September we will be getting ready to celebrate all things Dad! Children
will have an opportunity at second lunch to participate in decorating a cupcake for Dad to
enjoy!
Literacy and Numeracy Week 2014
This week is National Literacy and Numeracy Week and to celebrate, we are inviting parents and community members to come to school and participate in some mathematical
activities and story sharing with the children. Mathematical rotations will begin at 1:30pm
and we will finish the day with small group reading. It would be wonderful if you could
bring along a favourite story to share with a small group of children.

News from the Junior Room
As the term draws closer to its end, the Juniors are beginning to undertake and complete assessment tasks in Science and English.
In Science this term the Juniors have engaged in various science experiments inves ga ng the
living needs of plants. The focus of these experiments has been to explicitly teach the children
how to make logical predic ons, how to record observa ons in scien fic diagrams and how to
evaluate and describe the results of an inves ga on using scien fic language. This week the
Juniors will be engaging in a guided inves ga on of plant growth and will be assessed on the
scien fic abili es men oned above.
In Thinking Play, the Juniors have enjoyed planning and crea ng posters to adver se their small
business and have started crea ng their merchandise ready to sell on Market Day in weeks to
come. The children have chosen the following shops to develop in their small groups; a
bookshop, bakery, jewellery shop and pot shop (pots for pot plants!).
Children in the Jewellery Shop group are using beads to make bracelets and necklaces but have
a limited range of beads to choose from. If you have any beads from home or old necklaces you
are able to donate to the Junior Class it would be very much appreciated!

I would like to say a big thank you to parents of our grade 1 & 2 students for suppor ng your
children with prac sing their doubles number facts for math homework last week. These number facts are tested at the start of each math lesson and I have seen great progress over the
week. As this weeks number fact strategy is ‘near doubles’ it is important to ensure that your
child has a solid recollec on of their doubles facts before a emp ng this new strategy. If they
require further prac ce of doubles please opt to prac ce these rather than ‘near doubles’ e.g.
7+8.
News from the Senior Room
Over the past couple of weeks the seniors have been busy comple ng mid term assessments.
They constructed a personal le er to a future student at Gindie, they recalled number facts and
have been showing off their reading and comprehension skills. It has been great to be able to see
the students put their learning into ac on!

GAZETTE
This week, the seniors started a new English unit that focusses on Poetry. The year threes and
fours will be working towards wri ng and reci ng a humorous poem of their own while the year
fives and sixes will be analysing three separate poems based on their knowledge of poe c devices.
As we come to the end of our science unit, the class have begun drawing conclusions and examining the results of their independent plant inves ga on they have conducted across the term. I
am looking forward to reading each student’s scien fic reports at the end of term.
It was great to see so many homework books handed in last week—my apologies for not geEng
this marked over the weekend. I will mark both last week and this week when homework is returned to me on Friday. Comple ng homework with your child is a great way to find out about
your child’s academics and help them to consolidate classroom learning. If there is something you
feel that your child requires more prac ce with, I am happy to alter your child’s homework to suit.
