2017FUTURESPACELEADERSGRANTPROGRAM
TheFutureSpaceLeadersFoundation(FSLF)ispleasedtoannouncethe2017FutureSpaceLeadersGrant
Program. Intended for U.S. graduate students and young professionals who are pursuing space- and
satellite-related careers, the program will provide grants for participation in the 68th International
AstronauticalCongress(IAC)tobeheldinAdelaide,Australia,September25–September29,2017.
In addition to attending the IAC, Grant Recipients will also be involved in supplementary career
developmentactivitiesinAdelaide.TheseIAC-associatedeventsincludetheCross-CulturalPresentation
Workshop, the United Nations/International Astronautical Federation (IAF) Workshop, the Space
Generation Congress hosted by the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) and the Young
Professionals Workshop. These additional activities will necessitate Grantees’ presence in Adelaide
beginningonSeptember20,2017.
U.S.graduatestudentsandyoungprofessionalsareencouragedtoapplyforaGrantfromtheFSLF.In
addition to submitting an application to FSLF, applicants must apply through the IAF process and be
acceptedtopresentapaperinatechnicalorpostersessionatthe2017IAC,and/ortoserveasapanelist
or back-up panelist for the IAC Next Generation Plenary. Successful competition for an FSLF Grant
requiresacceptanceinatleastoneofthesevenues.
Eligibility
• Graduatestudentsandyoungprofessionalsbetweentheagesof21and35onJanuary1,2018,
whoareUnitedStatescitizensandarecurrentlyresidingintheUnitedStates;
• Individualsinterestedinpursuingcareersinvolvingthedevelopment,applicationanduseofspace
systems; space science research; policy, legal, social and cultural aspects of space activities;
internationalcooperationonspaceprograms;andothersimilarsubjects;
• Individuals who wish to meet and interact with colleagues from around the world with similar
interestsinspaceandsatellites;
• IndividualswhohopetoutilizetheknowledgeandexperiencetheygainduringtheIACtofurther
theirowncareersandtoenhancespaceandrelatedactivities.

WhatistheFSLF2017FutureSpaceLeadersGrantProgram?
The Future Space Leaders Foundation (FSLF) seeks to encourage and facilitate young people to pursue space- and
satellite-relatedcareers.Tothisend,theFoundationhasestablishedtheFutureSpaceLeadersGrantProgram.Grant
Recipients are competitively selected US graduate students and young professionals sponsored by the FSLF to
participate in the annual International Astronautical Congress (IAC) alongside participants in the Emerging Space
Leaders Grant Programme of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF). Application is open to US graduate
studentsandyoungprofessionalsbetweentheagesof21and35asofJanuary1,2018;applicantsmustbeUScitizens
currentlyresidingintheUS.
The 2017 Grant Program will offer grants to participate in the 2017 IAC which will be held in Adelaide, Australia,
September 25-29, 2017. Grant Recipients are also expected to participate in all or portions of a variety of IACassociated activities held the week prior to the Congress. These supplementary events include the Cross-Cultural
Presentation Workshop, the United Nations/IAF Workshop, the Space Generation Congress and the Young
ProfessionalsWorkshop.TheyarealsoexpectedtoattendtheRobertH.GoddardMemorialSymposiuminGreenbelt,
Maryland,inMarch2017andotherTBDeventsbeyondtheIAC.
GrantRecipientsmusthavebeenselectedtopresentapaper(orallyatanIACtechnicalsessionorinaninteractive
poster session) and/or to participate as a panelist or back-up panelist in the IAC Next Generation Plenary. It is the
responsibilityoftheapplicanttosubmitabstractsandapplyfortheseopportunities;itisalsotheresponsibilityofthe
applicanttonotifytheFSLFofacceptance.
To optimize their IAC experience, Grant Recipients will be provided advice from an FSLF mentor regarding the IAC.
ParticipantswillalsoreceiveinvitationstoparticipateintheactivitiesoftheIACStudentProgram(organisedbythe
IAF’sInternationalSpaceEducationBoard)and/ortheIAFYoungProfessionalProgram,bothofwhichareconducted
duringtheCongress.
GrantRecipientsmustreportonpost-IACfollow-upactivitiesafterreturninghome.
After the Congress, alumni Grant Recipients will be eligible to maintain participation in IAF student and young
professionalactivitiesthroughtheIAFwebsiteandrelatedprogram.

professional to date, the candidate’s perception of benefits that IAC attendance would bring, and the

Theapplicationformandtheessayshouldbesubmittedasanemailattachmenttocontact@futurespaceleaders.org;

applicant.

participationisarequirementforreceivingthisGrant.ItisexpectedthatGrantapplicantswillbenotifiedabouttheir
participationinAdelaidebyMay1,2017.ApplicantsmustnotifyFSLFdirectlythattheirpaperhasbeenacceptedfor
an IAC technical/poster session or that they have been accepted as a panelist or back-up panelist for the IAC Next
GenerationPlenarysothattheirparticipationcanbefactoredintoconsiderationoftheirFSLFGrantapplication.

Important Note: Applicants are welcome to apply for other funding to attend the IAC alongside the FSLF Grant.
However,uponreceiptoffundingfromathirdpartysource,itistheapplicant’sresponsibilitytoinformtheFSLFabout
theformofsponsorship(cash/flights/accommodation/etc.)andtheamountofsponsorshipreceived.TheFSLFwill,in
suchcase,makeadjustmentstoitsGrantaccordingly.
2.
Logistics
Passports:GrantRecipientsareresponsibleforpossessing/obtainingaUSpassportthatisvalidforatleastsixmonths
beyondtheirdatesoftravel.
TravelArrangements:InordertoparticipateintheIACandrelatedevents,GrantRecipientsmustarriveinAdelaide
on September 20, 2017, and depart Adelaide on September 30, 2017. Grant Recipients must submit to the FSLF
information regarding their proposed flights between the US and Adelaide, Australia, by July 15, 2017. These
proposedflightsmustbeonesatthelowestpossiblecost.Iftheproposedflightsareacceptable,theFSLFwillprovide
ago-aheadforbookingthetickets.Allcostsassociatedwithanextensionofstayforpersonalorotherreasonseither
beforeoraftertheIACandrelatedeventsaretheresponsibilityoftheGrantRecipient.Uponsubmissionofreceipts
followingtheIAC,FSLFwillreimburseforapprovedairfare.
HotelReservationsandOtherExpenses:GrantRecipientsmustmaketheirownhotelreservations.Uponsubmission
ofreceiptsfollowingtheIAC,FSLFwillreimburseforlodging,mealsandincidentalexpensesuptotheUSGovernment

Social Events and Technical Tours: FSLF will reimburse recipient for the cost of attending the Gala Dinner on
September17.AvarietyofothersocialeventsandtechnicaltoursareavailableatIAC2017.Theircostsarenotpart
oftheGrantProgram,butGrantRecipientsarefreetoparticipateontheirown.
GrantRecipientsmaychoosetoacquiretheirowninsurancecoveringhealth-relatedemergencies,medicalexpenses,
emergencyevacuation,andrepatriationofremains,tripcancellation,orinterruption.TheFSLFwillnotberesponsible
forcoveringanysuchexpensesincurredbyGrantRecipientsattendingapprovedconferencesorevents.

Grant Recipients are expected to participate in all five days of the IAC, attend the Cross-Cultural Presentation
Workshop,andtakepartinallorportionsoftheUN/IAFWorkshop,theSpaceGenerationCongressandtheYoung
ProfessionalWorkshop.
