Safety Considerations
Ensure that students are aware of a safe movement pattern between the
stations. Remind students to be aware of the personal space of others as they
move, and to always wait until the space between them and a target is clear,
before taking a shot.
Overview
Students will actively and safely explore territory games through a series of
stations.
WARM UP
Whistle Fitness
Students respond to whistle blasts as follows, reacting as quickly as possible
while continuously moving.

Station Cards (see GETTING
ACTIVE)
Set up a circuit of 9 stations using stations cards created by the teacher,
around the activity area.
Divide students into groups of 2–4.
Each group selects a starting station and will spend 45–90 seconds working at
each station.

If you do not have enough equipment for 9 stations or if you have a smaller
number of students, this activity can be modified for as many stations as
there is available equipment.
Demonstrate the activity at each station (or have a student do so) before the
group begins the circuit, highlighting safety considerations and movement
clarification.
Station 1 - Basketball: Lay-ups
Student A shoots a lay-up, gets the rebound, and returns to repeat. Student B
follows as soon as Student A has shot the ball; continue the process so all group
members get to shoot. If you do not have enough basketballs for each student,
Student A throws their ball to the next student waiting in line, after getting the
rebound. If everyone has a basketball, students continue dribbling the ball
while waiting in line, focusing on ball control.
Station 2 - Hockey: Figure-8 Stickhandling
Students control the ball with the hockey stick while stickhandling in a figure 8
formation around 4 or 5 pylons lined up in a row.
Station 3 - Basketball: Tap-Away
Working in the groups, each student dribbles a basketball within a designated
area. While dribbling, students attempt to tap the balls away from other
students in the group while maintaining control of their own ball.
Station 4 - Lacrosse: Passing
Students move feet quickly from side to side, take 2 quick running steps, raise
arms and pretend to throw ball as hard as possible, then run 2 steps backward,
raise arms, and pretend to catch ball with stick.

Station 5 - Basketball: Target Pass
Students stand 2–3 metres from wall and practice continuous passes against the
wall, aiming at a target (a taped square). Passes should be varied (e.g., chest
pass, bounce pass).

Station 6 - Hockey: Aiming the Shot
Students stand at taped line on the floor (at 5 and 10 feet intervals), line up
their shot with a spot on the wall (a taped square), and aim and shoot the ball
using the hockey stick.

Station 8 - Hockey/Basketball: Fancy footwork
Students form a line. The leader does crossovers for five steps to the right,
then five steps to the left, starting slowly and then increasing speed each time.

Station 9 - Hockey: Passing Pairs
Pairs start at one end of the area, and pass ball back and forth using their
hockey sticks as they move down the court as quickly as possible until one
person puts the ball in the net (two pylons).
Give each group a small ball. When music starts, students continue to walk on
the spot as they pass the ball around the circle.
When music stops, student holding the ball leads group in a cool-down stretch
(see ideas in Appendix B).
Encourage students to stretch large muscle groups and to focus on slow
movements.
Other Considerations
●
Station 7 - Basketball: Right/Left Hand Dribble
Students dribble the ball (i.e., zigzag) from pylon to pylon (4-6 pylons set up in
a row), with the right hand and return with the left hand. Encourage them to
keep heads up as they dribble between the pylons.

If your school does not have a gym, this activity can be done outdoors.
Encourage students to keep moving at all stations to maintain a moderate to
vigorous level of activity.
Be aware that there will be a significant range of skills in shooting, passing,
and dribbling.
Encourage students to monitor their own personal bests.
Integrate numeracy by having students record and calculate their shooting
percentage during the stations.
For higher intensity: students can increase their pace while running, shooting,
and passing at each station.
Remind students to replace all equipment in its starting position before
moving to the next station.
