prepare for the DBQ you will write in class on Friday
 We will have a test on Friday 4/24 over sub-Saharan African Civilizations, Classical
Trade Networks and Islam—prepare for a vocabulary quiz too!
 The map quiz on Sub-Saharan Africa will be next Friday 4/17
Monday 3/30-Wednesday 4/1: Discussion essay writing on Wednesday —we will write an essay
/DBQ on Wednesday in class—review your notes on the CLASSICAL civilizations (600 BCE600 CE.)

Monday 4/13: Essential Question for Discussion: What were the major achievements of the
Kush/Nubians?
Reading in Text:
 read the handout posted on the blog “Nubia 3100 BCE-350CE” then read the text
Chapter 4.1 pages 92-94 (there is just a little additional information here—look at the
pictures too.)
 take SPICE notes on the Kush/Nubia
Tuesday 4/14: Essential Question for Discussion: What were the contributions to civilization of
Aksum?
Reading in text:
 Chapter 8.3 pages 225-229
 take SPICE notes on the Kingdom of Aksum from the book
Wednesday 4/15: Essential Question for Discussion: What were some important contributions to
civilization of West African peoples?
Reading in Text:
 Chapter 8.1 pages 213-219
o take notes (and define vocabulary) on the Nok and Djenne-Djeno (there is not
too much on these two civilizations—you will not be able to take full SPICE
notes but make notes on themes that are addressed in the reading.)
 then read Chapter 8.2 pages 220-224
o just read Chapter 8.2 on the Bantu migrations and be ready to discuss the
essential question: How did Bantu migrations impact the development of
civilization in sub-Saharan Africa? —and define vocabulary
Thursday 4/16-Friday 4/17: Essential Question for Discussion: How did the land and sea trade
networks that developed between Europe, Asia and Africa facilitate the spread of goods
throughout the eastern hemisphere?
Reading for Thursday:
 read the handout “Classical Exchanges” start at “Routes Across the Sahara” and read
through “Camel Saddles”
 You will not be able to take thematic notes on this reading instead think about the
following questions:
1. Describe the Trans-Saharan land route.
2. How was the trade carried out?
3. What products were exchanged? How?

Then continue reading the handout and read up to “The Silk Roads”


1. How did Alexander’s empire contribute to the increased pace of long-distance trade?
2. During the classical era, what two developments stimulated long-distance trade?

between Europe, Asia and Africa facilitate the spread of ideas and disease?
Reading:
 handout: “Cultural and Biological Exchanges Along the Silk Roads”
 You will not be able to take thematic notes on this reading instead think about the
following questions:
1. How did Buddhism spread along the Silk Road?
2. How did Hinduism spread along the sea lanes of the Indian Ocean? How did this cultural
diffusion impact Southeast Asia?
3. How did Christianity spread outside the Roman Empire? How did this impact future Christian
beliefs and practices in Europe?
4. How did epidemic disease spread along the Silk Road? How did this impact development in
Europe and China?
Tuesday 4/21-Thursday 4/23: Essential Question for Discussion: What are the origins and the
major beliefs and practices of Islam?
Reading in text for Tuesday:
 Chapter 10.1 pages 263-268 and Chapter 10.2 pages 269-271 (stop at “Control Extends
Over Three Continents”)
 Take religion notes—focus on

o Beliefs and practices
o Religious texts
o Role of priests etc.
 Don’t forget to define the vocabulary in your notes.
