Jackson’s Indian Policies
• Indian Removal Act
– passed in 1830
– allowed fed. govt. to pay Natives to move west
– Only president to openly defy Supreme Court
ruling opposing this law
• Trail of Tears
– Fed. troops forcefully removed Cherokees
(1,000 + died)
• Indian Territory
– now Oklahoma (an area created to send
Cherokee)
