How Does it Work?
The SmartMusic system listens to students sing or play through
a microphone attached to a computer. With accompaniments for
over 30,000 titles, students practice their individual part while
listening to the piece as a whole. They see – and hear – immediate
feedback on how well they’re doing.

Student Progress with
SmartMusic Assignments
Students develop technical skills rapidly with SmartMusic. They can practice
music slowly at first until they get every note right. Then, as they gain confidence, they can gradually build up speed. SmartMusic lets students practice
at any tempo. In addition, difficult passages can be put into practice loops in
order to focus student practice.
With SmartMusic, students can hear how their part is to be performed. As they
practice the methods and exercises, they get real-time feedback that guides and
motivates them. Colored notes appear on the computer screen to help students
understand what they did wrong and how to correct it. They can record themselves and then listen to how they sound upon playback. Recordings make it easy
for students to hear the adjustments they need to make in order to improve.
It’s easy to integrate SmartMusic into your program. Add SmartMusic computers
to a school practice room and encourage students and parents to get SmartMusic
at home. Then give students a SmartMusic assignment such as a scale, Play By
Ear, or rhythm exercise. Students practice the assignment with SmartMusic until
they perfect it. Then they e-mail you the graded assessment and/or recording.
Now you have documentation of each student’s individual progress.

“SmartMusic actually listens as you
sing or play, and follows your students’
spontaneous tempo changes as they
interpret the music. When they slow
down, it slows down. When they speed
up, it speeds up. It even waits for them
as they hold a note! It’s like playing
with a good human accompanist.
Accompaniment makes practicing fun so
your students want to practice longer and
more often. They get better, faster. Only
when students practice with accompaniment can they work on things like being
in tune, keeping good time, and learning
to listen.”

key features
At school, you teach beginning students fingerings and rhythms,
demonstrate how the song is supposed to sound, encourage them
to practice slowly at first then gradually gain speed, and correct
their mistakes along the way. But what happens when students
go home to practice?
Stimulating and Fun
Students practice longer and more often because SmartMusic makes it fun! The
interactive system challenges students and helps them achieve mastery quickly,
leading to a sense of accomplishment and pride. Students like how they sound
with SmartMusic.
Better Prepared
More effective home practices mean students arrive back at school better prepared for their next lesson or rehearsal. You can move on to the next lesson and
spend less time correcting the bad habits students sometimes develop.

the Achievement
As students continue to improve, they can record themselves playing, save the
recording to disk, or e-mail the file to friends and proud grandparents. Built-in
assessment features help you document the progress of each individual student
with recorded data.

With SmartMusic at home, students practice what you’ve already taught them
about fingerings, rhythms, and how the song is supposed to sound. Most
importantly, students can practice songs at a slow, comfortable tempo and
then gradually build up speed when they’re ready.
As students play, they see feedback on-screen in the form of green and red
notes indicating which notes and rhythms have been played correctly. Students
can try again and correct their mistakes immediately!

Participation Increases, Results Improve
Ensuring Success
Students like how they sound with SmartMusic and look forward to demonstrating their talent and
skill at contest. When students have SmartMusic at home, they can practice their contest solo with
accompaniment every day. They learn their part and the composition as a whole. That makes them
stronger musicians.
“I use SmartMusic to give every student three contest solo assignments to do at home:
1. They send me a recording of the piece they’ve selected, showing me it’s an
appropriate contest piece.
2. They send me a second recording a few weeks later showing the progress they’ve
made. This gives me a chance to help them with any problem passages.
As students prepare for contest, they can record themselves, hear any pitch or rhythm errors,
make adjustments instantly, and get better – all on their own! As they improve, they hear it in their
recordings. Soon they’re confident in how they sound and excited to go to contest.
