Singapore Bar Method Use of Singapore Bar Modelling to support students with problem solving in Years 5,6 and 7 Mathematics Friday 16th June 2017 10am—3pm at Manor Fields Primary School, Penningtons, Bishop’s Stortford, Herts, CM23 4LE The Bar Model approach is a tool used by students to visualise mathematical concepts and solve problems. It is used extensively in the maths textbooks and workbooks in Singapore. One of the key learning principles behind the success of Singapore maths is the bar model method. This pictorial model is a tool used by students to visualise mathematical concepts and solve problems. The model method is pictorial : It develops from children handling actual objects, to drawing pictures and then drawing boxes to represent objects. Students learn how to translate information into visual models which can then be manipulated to solve problems. These bar models can be used to understand almost any concept in maths, including multiplication, division and even algebra. The main aims of the course are to: Introduce bar modelling as a tool to support children in problem solving. Represent abstract problems using the concrete and pictorial. Get an opportunity to practise using and applying bar modelling tool to problems. Think about ways in which teachers can stretch and challenge the higher attainers when using the bar model approach. To facilitate a discussion around additive and multiplicative reasoning and think about potential misconceptions with bar models. Matrix Essex and Herts Maths Hub This course is free of charge.
