SCOUTING THE REBELS
UNLV baseball (2-1) is coming off a series victory over No. 23 Nebraska at home. The Rebels
dropped the series opener in front of a record 3,173 fans 2-0, but bounced back to defeat the
Huskers 5-3 on Saturday and then recorded a shut out with a 3-0 win on Sunday. It was the first
series win over a ranked team since 2013 when the Rebels swept No. 9 Stanford. It was also the
first time since the Rebels joined the Mountain West that they shut out a ranked team. This week,
UNLV will play Grand Canyon on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. PT. The game will be televised on Cox
Sports Television with Barry Buetel handling the play-by-play duties, former major league player
Steve Lyons as the analyst and Kyrda de St. Aubin will serve as the on-field reporter. Last weekend the Rebels were led by their dominant pitching. After losing Friday night starter, Zak Qualls,
after only five pitches, junior college transfer Ben Wright made his first collegiate appearance and
allowed only one run on five hits in 5.0 innings of work. Bryan Bonnell also pitched well in relief,
striking out four in 3.2 innings of work while allowing no runs on two hits. On Saturday, Kenny
Oakley made the start for the Rebels and he allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on six
hits and stuck out six in 6.0 innings of work. He did not factor into the decision as senior Joey
Lauria picked up the win after tossing the final 3.0 innings allowing one run on one hit (a home
run) and he recorded three strikeouts. Arguably the outing from the mound came on Sunday as
sophomore transfer D.J. Myers allowed only three hits in 7.2 innings of work while striking out
five and walking only one. Relievers Zack Hartman and Brayden Torres made relief appearances
to help solidify the shut out. From the plate, UNLV was led by freshman Payton Squier, who finished 5-for-9 (.556) with two RBI and a run scored. Classmate Nick Rodriguez also hit well in his
weekend debut, finishing 4-for-11 with a triple, RBI and a two runs scored. Senior Edgar Montes
finished 4-for-10 and recorded two doubles on the weekend.
SCOUTING THE ANTELOPES
Grand Canyon comes into the midweek game against UNLV on a three-game winning streak. The
Antelopes made easy work of their opposition in the opening weekend, defeating North Dakota
State 6-3 on Friday, Omaha 8-1 on Saturday and Bradley 30-7 on Sunday in the Grand Canyon
University Classic. The ‘Lopes were led by Humberto Aranda, who finished 7-for-11 in three games
with five RBI. He also has two doubles and a triple and scored five runs. Chad De La Guerra went
7-for-13 with three home runs and 12 RBI and was named the Western Athletic Conference hitter of
the week. David Walker also hit .500, finishing 4-for-8 and he scored seven runs. Grand Canyon will
send sophomore left-handed pitcher Zebastian Valenzuela to the hill. He has made one appearance
for the ‘Lopes this season, pitching in relief against Omaha. He struck out two and walked two in 1.0
inning of work.

SECURING THE VALLEY
Sixteen of the 35 players on the 2015 baseball team hail from the Las Vegas
Valley (Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder City). The locals
represent 10 different high schools: Bishop Gorman (4), Coronado (3), Legacy
(2), Arbor View, Centennial, Cimarron-Memorial, Rancho, Silverado, Liberty and
Foothill. There are 17 total Nevadans on this year’s squad and the next highest
state represented is California, with nine. Arizona has four players represented
and Colorado has two while Oklahoma, Texas and Utah each have one player
each on the roster.
A SOUTHERN NV SPORTS HALL OF FAMER
UNLV baseball head coach Tim Chambers entered the Southern Nevada
Sports Hall of Fame as a part of the 2014 class, which was inducted on May 30
at the Orleans Arena. Chambers, who has been the skipper of UNLV baseball
since 2010, has coached in Las Vegas for more than 25 years at the high school
level, junior college level and now at the Division I college level. Chambers got
his start in coaching at Bishop Gorman High School in 1991 and coached the
Gaels for nine seasons. He helped Bishop Gorman reach the playoff for the first
time in nearly four decades and won six straight Sunset championships. He
also coached the Las Vegas Knights to the American Legion World Series. He
then started the baseball program at the College of Southern Nevada in 1999,
which was the state’s first junior college athletic team, and led CSN to a national
championship in 2003. In his last season with the Coyotes in 2010, he led CSN
to another Junior College World Series appearance and coached Bryce Harper
who went on to be the No. 1 overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft.
Since taking over the UNLV program in 2010, Chambers became the fastest
Rebel coach to reach 100 wins, doing it in 176 games. Joining Chambers in the
2014 class was former UNLV golfer Chris Riley, motocross star Carey Hart, drag
racing team owner Ken Black and the Herbst family.
CLOSING TIME
The Rebels come into the 2015 season with two of the best closers in school
history on the roster. Juniors Zack Hartman and Brayden Torres have 27 combined career saves. Hartman, who was the team’s primary closer in 2011 and
2012, needs only one save to have the most career saves in school history at
17. He missed the 2013 and 2014 seasons due to injury. In his first outing of the
year, he earned a Hold against Nebraska. Torres collected nine saves in 2014,
which tied a school record for the most saves in a season. In his first outing of
2015, he collected a save against Nebraska. He needs two saves to crack the
school’s top-five list.

UNLV junior Brayden Torres was one of 37 players named to the initial watch list
for the 11th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of
the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. The
North Las Vegas native tied a school record in 2014 by recording nine saves,
which ranked third in the Mountain West. He sported a 2-1 record to go with a
1.93 ERA and recorded 36 strikeouts in 32.2 innings of work. Torres is one of
two players from the Mountain West named to the list. The Pac-12 and Big Ten
Conferences led the way with five players each on this year’s watch list, while
the Atlantic Coast, Big West and Southern Conferences each had three. The
MW is joined by three other conferences to have two players apiece on the list:
the Southeastern, Missouri Valley and Mid-American Conferences. The full list
can be found below. The 2015 Stopper of the Year watch list will be updated with
a midseason release the week of April 20, including the national saves leaders.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader
and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released
Wednesday, June 3, prior to start of NCAA Super Regional competition. The
NCBWA’s All-America Committee will select the winner, with this year’s recipient
to be announced during the 2015 College World Series.
