History of the Augustinan Institute
In 1998, The Provincial Chapter nominated the Rev.
Professor Salvino Caruana OSA as successor to the Rev.
Professor Edward Fenech OSA to direct the Augustinian
Institute. In that same year, the Institute was transferred
from the Augustinian Monastery of Valletta, to Pietà, where
the Institute was now housed in a larger premises consisting
of several rooms, offices, lecture halls, chapel, and prayer
room. The premises include now two spacious halls
furnished with all the necessary modern didactic
instruments, the secretary's office, as well as a library
specializing in works on the life, thought and writings of the
great Father and Doctor of the Church, Augustine of Hippo,
and the Fathers of the Church.
Fr Caruana considered a priority the publicizing of the new
academic study-units that would be given at the Augustinian
Institute. The academic year would now consist of four
events. The first and major study-unit would be the
Augustine For All series of lectures from September to
December. The second study-unit would comprise the two
lectures in the Annual Saint Augustine Lecture, one held
at the University of Malta, and the other at the Institute. A
scholar of international repute in Augustinian studies and
research would be invited to deliver the Annual Lecture. The
third aspect of the annual curriculum would be the Lectio
Augustini. The Lectio consists of 8 sessions of two hours
each, from January to March of the academic year, during
which a specific text of Augustine related to the over-arching
topic of the current academic year would be read and
analyzed. The fourth and final aspect of the curriculum
would be the two-year course in the Philosophy For All
series of lectures. The four semesters of the study-unit
consist in 10 lectures for each semester on Neoplatonism, Christian Neoplatonism, and
the philosophy of Augustine of Hippo. During a session of the board of the Augustinian
Institute, a fifth aspect of the academic year was proposed by the Preside, Revd Dr Ray
Francalanza OSA SThD, namely, the holding two venues bound with the idea of the
Courtyard of the Gentiles. Fr Salvino contacted His Eminence Cardinal Gianfranco
Ravasi, President for the Pontifical Institute for Dialogue with Religions, who accepted
to deliver the inaugural lecture in January 2017.
Fr Salvino also recognized the great importance, as well as a great priority running
parallel to the recognition and resumption of academic activity at the Institute, the task
of healing past grievances with the academic institutions and others on the Island. The
more urgent ones being those created with the State University of Malta, especially with
2
the Faculty of Theology, as
well as those with the local
ecclesiastical
hierarchy.
The results of these efforts
were reaped very quickly
when
the
highest
representatives from both
institutions, three Rectors
of the University, and two
Archbishops, subsequently
accepted invitations to
preside academic events,
or to address topics on
specific aspects of politics
and church life; distributed
certificates of attendance,
or else were often present
for the Annual Augustine
Lecture at the University
of Malta. Besides setting
many minds at rest, this
situation also resulted in
an
opportunity
for
enhancing the influence,
operation and recognition,
of the sterling work being
done, as well as the
success being reaped at
the Institute. Several
Reception area Augustinian Institute
deans, heads of departments from various faculties at the State University of Malta,
accepted to deliver lectures at the Institute.
Besides, quite a number of students from various faculties were also encouraged
to follow study-units in theology and philosophy offered at the Institute. At the end of
each academic year, a Certificate of Attendance is awarded to participants.
"Naturally a politician will seek success, without which he would have no opportunity for effective political
action at all. Yet success is subordinated to the criterion of justice, to the will to do what is right., and to the
understanding of what is right. Success can also be seductive and thus can open up the path towards the
falsification of what is right, towards the destruction of justice. "Without justice - what else is the State but
a great band of robbers?," as Saint Augustine once said. (Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI Address to Federal
Parliament in Berlin's Reichstag Building: Politics at the Service of Rights and Justice, September 24, 2011 (AAS 103 (2011),

'To return to and ascend with the heart'
Augustine on the heart as the core essence of man
The metaphor of the heart plays a central role in Augustine’s account of his
conversion in the Confessions, which should be read as the autobiography of his
quest for God in the intimate centre of himself. In the Confessions, Augustine vividly
describes how God’s love "enflamed" his heart (see conf. 10, 4; 10, 38; 13, 10), that
God’s words ‘pierced’ it (conf. 9,3; 10,8). The concept of the human heart also plays
a central role in his thinking as such. He uses the word "cor" more than 8000 times
in his works. Augustine understands the heart as the holistic centre of the person, as
interiority in general. He sees the heart as the seat both of human thinking and
feeling. In this paper, Augustine’s spiritual interpretation of the heart as the source of
self-knowledge and knowledge of God is explored. Four interrelated contexts of
Augustine’s "spirituality of the heart" are discussed: the necessity of returning to the
heart, the appeal to rise up with the heart, the ideal of a society "one of heart", and
the invitation to pray with the heart.
Augustine and Stephen, testimonies of faith
Late antique reflections on Christian martyrdom as lesson for today?
Martyrdom is, after all, intertwined with the history of Christianity and its beginning,
namely Christ’s death on the cross. The theme of religious martyrdom leads to much
debate. Also, for the early Christians this was not just a simple matter or an obvious
choice. They thought very carefully and long about it. As in any religion or ideology,
there was also a tendency to fanaticism in Christianity. Precisely to avoid this
fundamentalism, Christian thinkers came after a thorough thought process to a very
specific interpretation of martyrdom. By going back to the experiences and
reflections of early Christians, it is easy to discover the unique character of the
Christian concept of martyrdom – in the past, present and in the future. Augustine of
Hippo has played a key role in the formulation of the Christian understanding of
martyrdom. By exploring Augustine’s discussion of this theme, especially in The City
of God and in his Sermons dedicated to the first Christian martyr, the deacon
Stephen, several aspects of the Christian meaning of martyrdom will unravel its
relevance for us Christians living in the world of today.

In a December 2009 address to the Curia, Pope Benedict "called for an itinerant 'Courtyard of the
Gentiles'", an international forum which would foster dialogue between Christian believers and
agnostics or atheists. In his Discourse of Foundation to the Pontifical Council for Culture, on December
21, 2009, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI declared "Here I think naturally of the words which Jesus quoted
from the Prophet Isaiah, namely that the Temple must be a house of prayer for all the nations (see Is 56:
7; Mk 11:17). Jesus was thinking of the so-called 'Court of the Gentiles' which he cleared of extraneous
affairs so that it could be a free space for the Gentiles who wished to pray there... He was thinking of
people who know God, so to speak, only from afar; who are dissatisfied with their own gods, rites and
myths; who desire the Pure and the Great, even if God remains for them the 'unknown God'" (see Acts
17:23). Today, in addition to interreligious dialogue, there should be a dialogue with those to whom
religion is something foreign, to whom God is unknown and who nevertheless do not want to be left
merely Godless, but rather to draw near to him, albeit as the Unknown. The biblical Court of the Gentiles
was a large outer court in the ancient Temple of Jerusalem that was not reserved for the Jews, but
rather was open to any person independent of his culture or religion. Cardinal Ravasi developed the
Pope's vision of large, open discussions "between faith and reason, secular culture and the Church."
Thanks to which initiative, Cardinal Ravasi "wanted to reintroduce the ancient tradition of the 'disputed
questions' – as they were called then – while at that time they had to do with different opinions and
theses, in this case they will be between believers and nonbelievers." He added "I am trying to see to it
that this danger is avoided". He stated that "I want really fundamental questions to be asked – questions
of anthropology, then good and evil, life and afterlife, love, suffering, the meaning of evil – questions
11
that are substantially at the basis of human existence." The leading intellectual questions to be
discussed and highlighted are always in the form of whether “one choose a ‘World without God?’ How
far can the human person go in the field of creation? Are there limits, and if so, what are they?"

"Only God is the absolute owner of all things and thus can say with full right: gold and silver
are mine" (Sermon 50,2). "God gives this to the human person for his correct use (S. 21,10).
"For that reason, the rich do not give of their very own possessions when they give something,
but of that which God has given to them to administer, and thus they have the right to possess
something only insofar as they administer it justly (S. 50,2; and S. 50,4). "That which is
superfluous to you is necessary to another (S. 39,6); "that which is superfluous to you is
necessary to the poor" (S. 61,12); "you possess the belongings of another when you hold on to
that which is more than you need" (S. on Ps 147,12); "it is a type of robbery not to give to one
in need what you have left over" (S. 206,2)."Christ is at once rich and poor: as God, rich; as a
human person, poor. Truly, that Man rose to heaven already rich, and now sits at the right
hand of the Father, but here, among us, he still suffers hunger, thirst and nakedness": "here he
is poor and is in the poor" (S. 123,4). "When human persons are in want, it is Christ who is in
want" (S. 236,3). "Perhaps you tell yourself: How blessed are those who merited to receive
Christ! O if only I had been there! O if only I had been one of the two disciples he met on the
road to Emmaus! Go out on the road. Christ the stranger is not absent. Do you think that you
are not permitted to welcome Christ? How can this be? you ask. Once having risen from the
dead,...Christ ascended into heaven, did He not?...and will He not come again until the end of
time to judge the living and the dead?...When He bestows his kingdom, will His words then
pertain to you: "What you did to one of the least of mine, you did it to me'? He who is rich is in
need until the end of time. He is truly in need, not in His Head, but in His members. Where is He
in need? He suffered in His members when He said: 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me'?"
(S. 239,6,7, and S. 25,8,8). Christ is present in the poor; when we give to the poor, it is Christ's
hand which accepts (S. 86,3,3).
