Zone Assistant, Boston Scholar Athletes Mission: To support academic achievement through athletics Position Summary: The Zone Assistant will be responsible for supporting 5-7 Zone Facilitators as part of BSA’s core strategy of providing academic coaching and counseling to Boston Public Schools (BPS) high school students at school-based learning centers called Zones. The Zone Assistant will work with his/her Senior Facilitator to assess the needs and type of support required at BSA Zones and will assist with various tasks to meet these needs. Department: Boston Scholar Athletes Reporting To: Senior Facilitator and Academic Coaching Manager Direct Reports: n/a Location: Combination of Boston Public High Schools Status: Hourly Responsibilities: • Assist 5-7 Zone Facilitators located in multiple BSA Zone locations with daily tasks that will include but not be limited to: • Recruit and enroll current and potential scholar-athletes throughout the school year using various innovative methods to increase Zone membership and meet program targets • Management of the Zone to provide consistent academic support and college preparatory resources for students within a welcoming environment conducive to learning; Zone oversight responsibilities will include but not be limited to: • Direct mentoring and academic coaching support to students • Management of volunteer tutors who will be present within the Zones on a regular basis; tutor requests and reports on tutor attendance should also be submitted • Regular maintenance of the physical space • Frequent updating of interior decorations and postings (e.g., college acceptance letters, brand collateral, warning notices, GPA’s, Scholar-Athlete of the Month listings, incentive programs, game schedules, college visit dates) • Management and inventory tracking of all materials in the Zone, including laptops, books, school supplies, furniture, graphing calculators, digital camera, e-readers & flash drives • Daily analysis of Zone data so as to allow for frequent tracking of key performance indicators throughout the year in areas such as Zone participation and academic outcomes • Tracking of all Zone members GPA’s and grades on a consistent basis to determine academic eligibility for participation in sports • Weekly reports on all Zone activities to the BSA Senior Facilitator and school administration • Collaborate with all other non-profit organizations within and outside of the school building to establish and understand all resources available to scholar-athletes in the local community • Provide thoughtful and consistent outreach to scholar-athletes’ parents to engage them in the Zone • Attend multiple required SA events and meetings, including but not limited to fundraising events, funder site visits, Board and Committee meetings, and professional development trainings Events/meetings will occur in Springfield and Boston; occasional travel to Springfield (1-3 trips per year) is required • • • • Develop a deep understanding of Scholar Athletes and its Boston activities to be able to represent and market the organization in a consistently professional and accurate way, including adherence to the uniform policy, brand guidelines, Facilitator Handbook, and knowledge of the key performance indicators Dedicated recruitment of non-athletes to encourage participation in the Zone and on an athletic team Engagement with out-of-season athletes to encourage participation in the Zone to facilitate in-season eligibility Assist with seasonal submission of sports teams rosters to the SA Athletics Team Professional Requirements: BSA is seeking an experienced professional with a minimum of 1-2 years of successful work with an innovative team and/or program in a sophisticated organization with a reputation for excellence and high expectations. A demonstrable track record of self-initiative, organization, and passion for “giving back” is essential. In addition s/he will have: • • • • • • • • • • • A Bachelor’s degree Proven experience and a track record of success with managing relationships with individuals and organizations A demonstrated ability to work effectively with and quickly gain the respect and support of various constituencies, including scholar-athletes, peers, in-school staff, coaches, and Headmasters A solid understanding of the Boston Public School district and its key initiatives A track record as an effective communicator and collaborator with developed skills in writing and speaking An ability to receive and respond well to feedback in a professional, constructive manner A comfort level for working well under pressure to meet deadlines and high expectations Adequate software skills, particularly with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel An ability to compile and analyze data (experience using Salesforce and Excel is preferred) An ability to thrive in a fast-paced, data-driven environment Passion for nonprofit work, particularly in an academic setting Personal Characteristics: The ideal candidate will be dependable, energetic, and adept at planning, prioritizing, organizing, managing, and executing on organizational and self-generated strategies.
