Autumn 2012 - The Market Bosworth School

MBHS NEWS
Autumn Term
Newsletter
Mr Hemingway’s Welcome...
I have to be honest, I didn‟t
much like school as a teenager.
Or, would it be more accurate to
say, I didn‟t like the school I
attended.
It was brand new, large (around
2000 pupils) and more than a
little frightening!
With the exception of the Art
teacher, who became a good
friend, the majority of the teaching staff didn‟t know who I was
and had little time for me
(particularly as I was no good at
football!)
It was only when I became a
teacher, while I waited to be
discovered as an artist, that I
became aware that relationships are at the heart of a good
education.
So, what has this got to do with
Market Bosworth High School in
2012? Well, it‟s simple. I would
have loved to have attended
this school as a teenager. It is
happy, safe and fun. It provides
challenging and supportive environments for staff and pupils.
But more than anything, it is a
school where the individual
counts.
I hope that this revised newsletter will pass on a flavor of what I
proudly describe as the best
school in the county!

The Science of Sound
Across the world pupils sat eagerly awaiting a momentous
occasion - no, not the moon
landings! Hooked up to the internet, in classrooms everywhere, pupils got to witness the
very first live Science lesson
online.
The lesson was streamed live
from The Royal Albert Hall on
Wednesday 11th October and
lasted 15 minutes covering the
science of sound. The lesson
was taken by TV presenters
Dallas Campbell and Dr Yan
Wong from „Bang Goes the
Theory‟.
Pupils were able to ask questions via twitter and during the
lesson two questions were answered by the presenters. One
of these questions was submitted by Ava Sjoberg in year 9
asking „Can sound warm things
up?‟. Pupils in year 9 watched
the lesson during their own Science lessons and really enjoyed
the way corn flour danced on
the loudspeaker from the vibrations and that sound could shatter glass. It was a perfect opportunity to extend their learning in
an interactive way.

Howling Halloween
Through the dim, flickering
candle light the ghouls and
ghosts, vampires and witches, zombies and skeletons
crept and crawled out of
their graves and hovels into
MBHS for a fiendish Halloween disco.
The disco, on Friday 2nd
November, was for our Year
7 pupils and they did not
disappoint. The costumes
were terrifying, the dancing
devilish and the competitions electrifying!
The disco was held in the
canteen and drama studio,
both suitably decked out in
cobwebs, bats, skeletons
and pumpkins.
Whilst the spooky tunes of
„Thriller‟ and „The Monster
Mash‟ emanated from the
drama studio disco room,
many of the undead creatures competed at apple
bobbing, flour bobbing,
mummifying Mr Khan,
twister and stick the nose
on the witch. As well as
having a great time covering
each other in flour and toilet
tissue mummy bandages
the undead enjoyed chomping on hot dogs, sweets and
crisps and slurping down
vile-looking, taste bud tingling punch!
There were also competitions for the best costumes,
the best dancing and the
best pumpkin carving.
With teachers dressed to
scare (a knife wielding
ghost face, several witches,
a mad scientist, a killer
zombie convict, a zombie
woman and several skeletons) and the screams and
shouts of fear and glee
ebbing away, the disco,
organized by The PSA, was
a complete success with the

Musical Magnificence
On Monday 12th November, parents, staff
and pupils came together to appreciate the
musical magnificence of some of the most
talented pupils at Market Bosworth.
Performances included „Super Trooper‟,
„Can You Feel The Love Tonight‟, „Valerie‟,
„Greensleeves‟, „Skyfall‟ and „Theme From
William Tell‟.
The evening was a spectacular display of
singing and musical performance from
pupils across all three years.
With such talent on display a huge well
done needs to go out to the performers and

Market Bosworth High School
hosted the first of their 10 feeder primary school sports festivals for 2012/13 on Wednesday
10th October, with over 140
children from Congerstone,
Sheepy Magna, Barlestone,
Witherley, Newbold Verdon and
Desford participating in a Year 5
and 6 Tag Rugby Festival. The
whole day was a fantastic success with a double victory for
Congerstone, who were
crowned Year 5 and Year 6 Tag
Rugby Champions. Children
from all schools had a thoroughly enjoyable day with an excellent standard of rugby being
displayed by all players. Special thanks go to David Fitt and

11-16 Update
Over the last year developments in the educational system in Leicestershire have taken a
swift and dramatic turn.
In May, MBHS became
an Academy. Although
this has had little impact
on the day-to-day running of the school it has
opened opportunities for
taking the school into a
new era.
Until recently, Leicestershire has had an unusual
educational system in
that pupils transfer to a
high school (11-14) and

school or college to complete their GCSEs and A
-Levels.
are now working hard to
create a challenging,
comprehensive, innovative curriculum.
As you may be aware,
MBHS has finally received confirmation that
we can become an 1116 GCSE school as of
September 2014.

Movember has been
sweeping Market Bosworth

It began in Melbourne and

Many male members of
staff at MBHS have spent
their Movember shampooing, scratching, nurturing
their „tashes in the hope that
they would not let their Mo

Mr Khan, Mr Black, Mr

On Friday 16th November, a

The National Skills Show at the

The show is
designed to
inspire visitors
whilst thinking about skills and
the world of work. Skills competitions, awards and activities
are all aimed to bring skills to
life and change the way people
think about skills, training and
apprenticeships.
The show provided a huge
range of „hands on‟ activities
for our pupils to try. This included
practical skills such as building,
car maintenance, gardening,
hairdressing, beauty

as well as computer

and interest the pupils in terms of
considering their future career choices.
Everybody involved
had the opportunity to

that they wanted so that they
could get the most from the visit.
The pupils agreed it was a stimulating and fun visit rating it a 4 out

Ex-Pupil’s Success!
At MBHS we are always delighted
to hear how our former pupils are
doing once they have grown up.
We take a great interest and pride
in how our pupils develop into
young adults.
On the 24th November Miss Collinson attended a regatta at Bosworth Water Park. There she
bumped into a past pupil of MBHS
working as the head chef. Miss
Collinson says:
I was pleasantly surprised to see
an ex pupil from MBHS behind the carvery and in the role of head chef.
I spoke with him after the ceremony and
he reminded me that he attended MBHS
between 2003 and 2006.
After attending Ashby College he began
working at The Curzon Arms in
Twycross. Whilst working full time in the
kitchen there Ryan studied for his Level
2 NVQ in Catering. This involved being
assessed frequently by outside assessors. He then went on to study for his
Level 3 NVQ at Loughborough College
whilst working part time.
I asked him if Food Technology at MBHS
had inspired him and he said „I remember
making things like oat cookies and lasagna and taking those recipes home to
adapt them and make them my own.‟
It is fantastic to hear how successful our
ex-pupils have become and it makes us
proud that his inspiration began here at
MBHS!
Look out for Ryan at Café Kouts at Bosworth Water Park.

Year 9 WW1 Day
Andrew Spooner of Skylark Battlefields Tours
visited the school in October and gave a presentation to the whole of
year 9 about the life of
the soldier during the
First World War.
Pupils got to hear accounts of day to day
existence of the
„Tommies‟ in their
trenches as well as han-
dling and seeing various
pieces of equipment and
weapons demonstrated.
In the afternoon Andrew
did a hands on session
for some gifted and talented students including
other artefacts and original letters that are too
delicate to be used by
large groups.
The interest in the First
World War is quite re-
markable and it seems
to capture the imagination more than any
other conflict of modern times. We will be
running a trip to the
battlefields again in
March 2013 for Year
9s to really visualise
the battles.
