Who can attend the
speech and language
drop-in?
Any parent or legal guardian
of a pre-school child, who has
a concern, can come to the
drop-in with their child.
What are the benefits?
The benefits of the speech and
language drop-in are:
• immediate advice and support
• choice of dates and venues
• quick access to other help and
support, where needed
Pre-school children
If you have a concern and your
child is not yet in reception class
you should bring your child to
the drop-in. Children in school
can be referred by their school
or you can refer them directly to
the speech and language clinic
by calling 01268 644 103

your child, or a child that
you are working with, please

What happens at the
drop-in?
When you arrive you will be
asked to register. You may have
to wait a short time whilst
people who arrived before you
are seen. You and your child
will be seen individually in a
room set up for children to play.
You will be asked about your
child’s communication skills and
development. The speech and
language therapist will then
observe your child during play
and discuss these observations
with you. We will then help you
decide whether your child needs
further support.
Complex needs and
social communication
If you are concerned about your
child’s general development
or about more complex needs,
such as autism, we recommend
you see a speech and language
therapist working within a
multidisciplinary service. Ask
your health visitor for more
information.
