Pat’s Corner……. So Jesus again said to them, "Children, How hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God." They were astonished and said, "Then who can be saved?" Jesus loved them and said, "For men it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God." (Mark 10:24-27) The Mission of The Church, Christ’s promise! The Mission was a movie from 1986 starring Jeremy Irons and Robert DeNiro. A Jesuit priest goes to the jungle hills of Paraguay, in the 1780’s, to convert the Guarani Indians to Christianity. Robert DeNiro’s character is a Spanish slave trader who goes to collect new slaves of the Indians. He is converted to study as a Jesuit priest but carries a lot of baggage, literally! There is a scene of him trying to carry his cherished suit of armor with him even up the rugged mountain side in stubborn defiance of the struggles he faces in doing so. In the final struggle he cannot get the collection of armor up over the final piece of the hill face and the Indians watch and laugh as he struggles. Just as the armor is about to drag DeNiro’s character off the cliff to his death, the Indians cut the ropes and it falls to the floor of the mountain face. Thank you for all donations received The man is saved by the very savages he has gone to enslave. The savage turns out to be himself, not the native Guarani Indians. Welcoming New Catholics The baggage he carries almost killed him if it had not been for the intervention of savages. The lion and the lamb trade places, sort of speaking. This Easter Season is a wonderful time to celebrate our faith and the Resurrection of our Lord. For those newly initiated into the Catholic Church, this spring also marks a milestone on their faith journey. With help from parish-directed programs called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), candidates received the resources, support, and knowledge they needed to take the next step in their journey of faith. The RCIA program begins at the diocesan level, and parishes receive assistance in helping people come into full communion with the Catholic Church. With a gift to the Bishop’s Appeal, you help parishes enhance their RCIA programs and welcome future, newly formed Catholics. To make a gift to the Bishop’s Appeal contact your parish, visit the Bishop’s Appeal website at www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give, or call Debbie toll-free at 877-500-3580, ext. 8184. In the Gospel, Jesus shows how our baggage is pride. Just like DeNiro’s character, the weight and uselessness of our past treasures and victories are of no value for salvation. All things are possible for God. So, that is where we need to place value! The value of God’s accompaniment in life is more useful and precious than all the pride we put in our self gained accomplishments. It is impossible for us to do good deeds without God’s strength in the Eucharist. In Him all things are possible! Let go of the past baggage of: angers, resentments, fears, disappointments and hurts. In Easter we should remember that hymn we sang at the beginning of Lent that says: “We rise again from ashes, to recreate ourselves anew!” A Very BLESSED EASTER SEASON To you these 50 days of Easter!
