We are a little late with the newsletter, sorry a bit busy, Br Bill solely to blame.
Most students returned on time ready for work.
But still too many returned late. I do feel that 14 weeks holidays is enough.
So please make every attempt to respect the arranged travel dates for each term.
It was a pleasure to visit Palm Island on May 7-8 with Jude Koehler and Jen Cadzow.

We attended the school expo, and met 6 or so families. We were
made to feel very welcome, including our visits to the two
primary schools.
We will visit TI from May 29 till June 2.

Recent pleasing events have been Masses in each of the dormitories with smaller groups. A highlight has been Deacon Ralph
sharing stories from his parents’ lives of 50 years ago, Palm Island and other experiences -some being Australia’s sad
indigenous history.
Congratulations to those selected in Peninsula sports teams so far this year:
Matilda Warria competed at the Volleyball State Titles this week as did Jack Daniel for Touch Football. Mary-Anne Mosby
has recently been to Brisbane and joined the Peninsula Volleyball team to compete at State level. Anna Bani and Derek
Creed – Haines will both compete at Peninsula trials on Friday 24th May for Cross Country.

PARENT / TEACHER INTERVIEWS
I would like to thank all parents and carers who attended the Parent/Teacher/Student conferencing held on the 24 th
April. It was a productive time for Parents, students and teachers to meet to discuss student progress, and strengthen our
partnerships. I encourage all parents to continue this conversation with individual teachers through phone conversations
and/or e-mail as the year continues.
STUDENT DIARIES
Term 2 is a short term, so we will all need to be focussed on the tasks at hand. Please ensure that your student is using their student diary,
and bringing it to class each day. This is an effective tool to assist with scheduling homework, working towards assignments and
prioritising. Home Form teachers will be checking student use of their diaries on a weekly basis. If your diary has been misplaced a
replacement is available form Student Reception for $10.

MSB Tuckshop News This week has seen the introduction of tuckshop
for day students. This is provided through our kitchen who prepare the boarders meals.
These menus will rotate every four weeks. Cost is $7.50 which includes morning tea and
lunch. Students wishing to purchase must pay at front office before school. Correct money
is appreciated.

Australian Defence Force ~ Indigenous Study Tour
Over the Easter School holidays Mary-anne Mosby and Leilanie Aniba had the opportunity
to experience life as an Officer Cadet with the Australian Defence Force.
15 students from across Australia were selected to attend the Indigenous Student Study
Tour in Canberra over four fun filled, army styled days.
The girls were flown to Canberra and had a first-hand look at
what life would be like living at the Australian Defence Force Academy. This included a tour of the
university and lunch in the dining hall. The students had the chance to attempt the ADFA obstacle
course suspended over a 25m pool. Not every student completed the suspended course, but every
student came out soaking wet as they fell over three metres into the water!
A visit to the National War Memorial gave everyone a chance to reflect
on the service of many indigenous men and women throughout our
history. The students were taken on a private tour of the War Memorial
and given an inside look at how war memorabilia is archived at the museum.
The Royal Military College Duntroon gave the students an insight into the Army Officer Training.
They experienced lectures and toured the facilities, and they were also fortunate to do a Physical
Fitness session with the Commanding Officer of the Academy.
The last stop on the tour was to the Defence Recruitment Office where students had the
opportunity to meet Defence Personnel from Army, Navy and the Air force. Here, students
learnt about the different types of jobs available to them if they chose to enter the Defence Force
after school.
I would like to commend Mary-anne and Leilanie, two students from MSB who took an opportunity and experienced it fully
whilst being respectful young women who did our school proud.
Peninsula Basketball Trials
We had 12 students qualify to attend the Peninsula U 19 Basketball trials in Cairns recently.
The competition was really tough however, Pamai Dau managed to get herself into the
Possible/Probable team and did an amazing job. Other competitors were Irene Bani, Rachel
Pilot, Leina Bani, Shakiera Mathieson, Alfreda Tarpencha, Willington Pearson, Tevin Neliman,
Jack Daniel, Zachary Munckton and Brian Pickering.

donated funds for the purchase of bean bags for the Library. These bright, new
and very green space chairs are a welcome addition.

INTERESTING FACTS
•Clown fish have a special coating which stops them from getting stung by the anemone they
live in
•There are three types of clownfish
•The clown fish takes food to the anemone and
•Cassius, is currently the world’s largest crocodile in captivity
•He is 110 years and expected to live for another 10 years
•5.5m long (without parts of his tail he lost)
•His left front leg is MIA
•He was relocated from the Northern Territory after eating boat outboards.
•There are only two types of sea turtles based around Green Island
•The two types are Hawksbill & Green Turtle
•The difference between these animals is their beak and the plates on their shell.
•The hawksbill has a hawk like beak as it eats hard crustaceans whereas the
green turtle has a rounded beak and eats soft algae. Both like jellyfish
•The male has a long and skinny tail whereas the female has a short and fat tail.
We thought the guide would lock Irene up as each time a particular animal was mentioned her
response was:
MAN: Parrot fish don’t eat the coral, they eat the algae so they require a beak like mouth.
IRENE: They taste nice
MAN: The blue spotted sting ray is protected at Green Island
IRENE: I eat them
MAN: (man looks in shock)
CLASS: (create a protective barrier around Irene)
MAN: I have swum with a dugong
CLASS: (Looks at Irene) SHHHHHHHH
Year 11 Biology Camp
On the 22nd and 23rd of April, the Year 11 biology students ventured out into the real
world to experience what it was like to be biologists. On Monday we went to Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre and went for a walk amongst the mangroves to identify species of mangroves and try to pump some yabbies. After a refreshing snack, we visited the centres aquarium where Germaine saved a Suicidal fish.
Dylan, Katelyn, Ms Morris and Paige got to hand feed the massive Barra. Tough Irene
got scared and threw the fish into the Barra and Snappy Tom (the croc) tried to snap
Paige’s face through the glass.
On Tuesday, we travelled to GREEN ISLAND and within minutes of landing on Green Island, we were lucky enough to see our
first Green Turtle! Irene said YUM! The glass bottom boat tour was next, where we saw a range of amazing species of coral and
fish. Luckily for us Navarre was unsuccessful at persuading the tour guide to let him drive the boat.
Later on, we got a behind the scenes tour of the resorts self-sustaining facilities. Students were in awe at watching the sewage
being processed into water. They declined to try it when offered though!
To end the day, students enjoyed a snorkel throughout the reef. We had many visitors including sting rays, parrot fish, a blue
tang (baby dory), clam fish, Christmas tree worms and a variety of beautiful coral.
Sadly, it was time to leave, but we had our last Green Island experience. When walking to the boat we saw 3 reef sharks in the
water where we had been snorkelling. Overall it was a very interesting and exciting camp, were we all had fun and learnt new
things!
"Tourism in the Local Area"
Year 11 & 12 Tourism
Which town caters mostly to the tourist trade? Which town's business would suffer most if the tourists stopped
coming? What types of businesses does each town have? What is the role of the Information Centre in each town?
What does it mean if a town is RV friendly?
All these and more were answered by the Year 11/12 Tourism class on their recent excursion to Yungaburra and Malanda for the
Term 2 "Tourism in the Local Area" unit. Students completed work booklets to be used as a focus for some Compare and Contrast
activities back in the class room.

Shopping at Woolworths?
The Woolworths Earn & Learn program is back! This community program enables our
school to earn educational resources simply through the school community shopping at
Woolworths.
From Monday 8th April until Sunday 9th June 2013, when you shop at Woolworths,
you will be given Woolworths Earn & Learn stickers. One Woolworths Earn & Learn
point is issued for every $10 spent (excluding cigarettes, liquor and gift cards).
Mount St Bernard College has a box at Woolworths in Atherton or you can bring or send them into our school library. With
enough Woolworths Earn & Learn points we will be able to redeem these stickers for some handy educational resources.
Don’t forget to collect your stickers when you shop. Thank you. Library.
