On behalf of all of the Lumberjack staff and Wausau East High School, it is
indeed my pleasure to say to all of you Happy October. We’re already
through our 2016 Homecoming Week festivities, and our fall sports and
other extracurricular events are already well into this season’s campaigns.
For those of you whose children are in their ninth grade year and new to the
experience at Wausau East, I hope the transition to the high school setting
has been a smooth and positive one. For those of you who are familiar with
East due to having children attend in the past, I hope this year’s start has

You might’ve noticed that there’s a new person in the Associate Principal – Student Services
position at Wausau East this year – the new smiley, bald guy. Even though I’ve had an
opportunity to meet a good number of you at school and/or school functions during August and
September, I wanted to share a little bit about myself and my family now that we’re all into the
hustle and flow of a new school year. My name is Jason Sinz, and I am incredibly honored to
be serving as your new Associate Principal – Student Services. Wausau has been home for
the past nine years while I’ve taught English/Language Arts classes to sophomores through
seniors and coached football and track at Wausau West. During the past five summers, I
served as an Assistant Principal for the Wausau School District’s programming that brings
together students from East and West. Prior to my Wausau time, I taught (and coached
football, basketball and track) for eleven years in St. Croix Falls, WI. I also grew up locally,
having been a part of the 1991 graduating class at Edgar High School. My college days were
spent at UW – Madison cheering wildly at Camp Randall as a committed Badger backer, so I
DO like wearing red and white!
My wife Amber and I have three children we battle and grow with daily: Sophie is in her sixth
grade year at John Muir, Celia is in her fourth grade year at Stettin, and Tate is a kindergartner
at Stettin. Amber currently stays at home to run our household, but she had worked as a
school counselor prior to more recently providing in-home day care for others while watching
our own children. Know that I am very familiar with the challenges of school-aged children and
convincing them that mom and dad and school all have their best interests in mind; I will partner
with you to reinforce that daily!
I know from my conversations and meetings thus far with students, staff at every level, and the
team of administrators that East is a school committed to excellence. A commitment to safety,
academic achievement, character development, and a sense of belonging and community are
clearly priorities at Wausau East High. Please be assured that my commitment is to honor the
accomplishments of East and to contribute to even greater successes in the future.
Please enjoy taking some time reviewing the “Notes Home” newsletter, as it provides a wealth
of important information regarding upcoming events, classroom and school activities updates,
and parent and community activities. Again, I want to reinforce my hopes that 2016-2017 at
Wausau East High will be the best school year yet. Please do not hesitate to stop by my office
or give me a call if I can assist you in any way. Best wishes to you and your family, and “Go
Lumberjacks!”
Sincerely,
Jason M. Sinz

Bullying? Not On My Campus!
Lumberjack students started the 2016-17 school year by making a pledge that bullying of any kind would not
be tolerated in their school. Their signatures on the posters shown below signify their solidarity in standing
up to bullying to ensure that all East students feel accepted and valued and have a safe environment in
which to learn. Additional events are being planned for the school year that support this important message.
The posters read: I will stand up to ensure that all Lumberjacks have the opportunity to live and learn in an
environment free from bias and hate, where they feel safe, valued, included and accepted.
Link Crew Leaders,
Band Members,
Mr. Hornby, Tech Crew and
Freshman Homeroom Teachers
for making our Transition Day a success!
Our first day would not be possible without you!

$100,000 Dream Big Teacher Challenge:
Vote Starting October 1 @
ThankAmericasTeachers.com
In late July, Wausau East Librarian Paula Hase was thrilled to find out Wausau East’s grant proposal
“Plugged in, Engaged, and Informed: Ownership of Learning through Video Production and
Journalism” was one of only 15 finalists nationwide for the Farmers Insurance $100,000 Thank America’s
Teachers Dream Big Teacher Challenge! Mrs. Hase
coordinated the efforts, creativity, and drive between
Elizabeth Kysely - Graphics Department, Kris Mela WETV News, and Kurt Hornby - WETV Sports to write
a proposal to convert our outdated analog
broadcasting lab into a new, state-of-the-art 21st
century digital space. If Wausau East receives the
grant, we will be equipped to compete with some of
the best high school media labs nationwide. The
grant will provide additional access to computers,
create a sound booth, install professional grade
lighting, and many other features for students to use
both during and outside the school day. The lab will
Paula Hase (left) and Elizabeth Kysely (right)
also be used to educate Wausau School District staff
about multimedia tasks like the ability to record and edit video as well as manipulate photos. Community
members, too, will have the opportunity to learn basic editing skills and utilize the new technology using the
equipment for free as an outreach to the community.
Now we need your help to go from finalist to WINNER! Six schools total will be awarded a $100,000 grant
each by public vote. Throughout the month of October, our proposal summary video will be available online
for public review and vote. Please click on the highlighted link below, and vote daily during the month of
October. Vote once a day, each day, and if you have more than one email address, each email
address is counted as a separate vote. Help make our Dream Big Proposal a reality! Go Lumberjacks!

Justine Horvath - French Teacher
My name Is Justine Imelda Horvath and I am excited to be the new Wausau East High
School French teacher. I was born and raised in Benin, West Africa, where my education
began as a member of the Office Business Management Academy at Lycée CADMES. After
moving to the United States and getting married, I earned my Bachelor of Art and Master of
Science in Human and Community Resources from the University of Wisconsin - Stevens
Point. These degrees were key in my time with the Stevens Point Area School District where I
first began as a special education paraprofessional helping autistic and special needs
students. After various preschool and middle school substitute teaching positions, including summer school
programs with the Giselle Learning Center and UW-Stevens Point Youth in College funded by Stevens Point
Area School District Summer School Program where I taught French Culture and Literacy.
I also provided respite care on a regular basis, helping special needs families in their homes. I spent the last
five years as a French teacher for the Holmen School District where I was able to bring a new authentic
perspective to middle school youth. I was also fortunate to be able to plan and host an amazing trip this past
summer to France, after which I moved back to the area to be closer to my family and to take on the
tremendous opportunity of bringing my experiences and skills to Wausau East High as a French instructor. In
my free time I enjoy reading, crocheting, farming, cooking and baking. Spending time with my husband, five
children and my two grand children is certainly a handful and brings energy and light to my life! Most
importantly, I love traveling around the world and bringing back treasures of knowledge and memories.
I'm proud to now be a Lumberjack!
Vong Lao - Art Teacher
Hello, my name is Mr. Lao, and I am the new art teacher at Wausau East High School. My
educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education – Professional
Development from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. Prior to my journey here I taught
at Rib Mountain, South Mountain, and Stettin Elementary School. I enjoy spending time with
my wife and two sons (a two year old and a one year old) outside of my profession. It is an
honor and pleasure to be working along with other great educators and students. I look
forward to this new journey and I welcome any questions and/or concerns you may have.
Seth Clendenning - English Language Learner Teacher and Dept Chair
Greetings! My name is Mr. Seth Clendenning and I am proud to be a Lumberjack! I was
previously a Horace Mann Eagle for five years, teaching social studies and ESL. Now, I am
truly honored to take the torch from George Hagge as ELL Coordinator! A quick snapshot of
me: I taught English and social studies for three years in China, I speak Chinese, play various
guitars, coach volleyball, proclaim myself to be a technology guru, I geek out on board games
on the weekends, am an avid Tolkien and Star Wars fan, am father to two girls and a boy,
hail from Stevens Point (Yes, I’m a SPASH/UWSP graduate), master of an all-white Siberian
husky, and am excited to put students first! Thank you for welcoming me to the East family!

I am looking forward to starting my journey here at Wausau East.
Katie Normand - Special Education Paraprofessional
My name is Katie Normand. I went to high school at Newman Catholic, and then went on to
study sign language at NTC. I started working as an Educational Interpreter for CESA 5
before coming to the Wausau School District. I have a wonderful husband, a son and two
stepchildren. During our free time we hunt, four wheel, and spend lots of family time
together. I am excited to get to know everyone at Wausau East!

Ken Smith - Special Education Paraprofessional
Hello, my name is Ken Smith. I graduated from Sussex Hamilton High School before
attending LaCrosse State University. A year later, I enlisted into the Marine Corps where I
became a weather observer. After being discharged, I attended Cal State Long Beach where
I earned a B.A. in Recreation Administration in 1978. Upon graduation, my wife and I, and
my two sons moved to the state of Washington. With little opportunities in recreation there, I
worked as a drywall finisher for the next 30 years. This is my fifth year as a special education
para. As a family, we look most forward to week-long fishing trips. My favorite activities are
biking, bowling, golf, and of course, fishing. Watching my four grandsons in youth and high school sports is at
the top of our list of things to do nowadays.
We also welcome our new school nurse, Julie Welch!
We extend a hearty Lumberjack welcome to all!

Lumberjack Pride: Set Your Mind on Success!
Wausau East PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) has a new name--Lumberjack
Pride! Lumberjack Pride is our school-wide system for defining, teaching and supporting appropriate student
behaviors in an effort to create a positive school environment. This behavior management plan is a continuum
of positive behavior supports for all students at Wausau East, and it is implemented in all areas of the school
(commons, auditorium, restrooms, classrooms, bus, etc). Our Lumberjack Pride Team looks forward to
another year of working toward the Wausau East Mission "to positively impact the future by helping
students reach their full potential in a rigorous learning environment of respect, integrity, compassion
and excellence."
One component of Lumberjack Pride is the positive acknowledgement
system. A positive acknowledgement is the presentation of something rewarding
immediately following a behavior. The acknowledgement makes the behavior more
likely to occur again in the future and is a powerful tool for shaping and changing
behavior. At Wausau East, teachers, administrators, counselors and support staff
present Lumberjack Pride tickets (see the examples) to
students exhibiting behaviors that exemplify the
Wausau East core values of respect, integrity,
compassion and excellence. Students can then use their tickets to enter a weekly
drawing for prizes including Wausau East items, Bath and Body Works products,
$5 gift cards and more. New this year, students may also contribute their Pride
tickets to the compassion bucket. The number of tickets in the bucket will
determine the value of a monetary donation to a local charity selected by the
student body.
Honoring Our Lumberjack Armed

Wausau School District Meal Account Procedures
Insufficient Secondary Student Account Balances
Parents/guardians are required and expected
to maintain a positive balance in their child’s account.
The Wausau School District Nutrition Services Department uses an automated meal accounting system to
record breakfast, lunch, and a la carte transactions and to monitor all meal account transactions. Students are
issued a meal account ID number upon enrollment with the Wausau School District (WSD). In addition,
students are issued a meal card with their ID number to access their individual account for all purchases.
This meal system functions as a debit system, similar to a checking account and requires parents/guardians
or students to prepay into the account and to maintain a positive balance.
Automated phone calls and emails are sent to households via SchoolMessenger® on Monday and
Thursday evenings when the account falls below $10.00. Accounts with a zero balance or balance above
$10.00 will not receive phone messages.
Secondary Students: When the meal account reaches a negative balance, students will receive a light meal
costing $1.00. Light meals will be provided until the account reaches - $10.00. At - $10.00 and greater, the
meal account will be put on hold until the negative balance is paid. The parent/guardian will be required to
provide a meal from home. Light meals consist of a sandwich, fruit, and milk.
- $10.00 balances and greater: Parents/guardians will be contacted by the Nutrition Services office, school
guidance counselor/social worker and/or principal to offer assistance in completing a Free and Reduced Meal
Application or determine if special assistance to the family is needed.
Questions regarding this policy may be directed to the Director of Nutrition Services, Lee Nielsen at 715/2610806 or [email protected]

How Do I Send a Transcript of My Student’s IB Exam Results
to a University?
If before June 10, your son/daughter submitted a request to the Diploma Programme coordinator on their
behalf, the coordinator was able to select up to six institutions worldwide, of which, no more than one
institution can be selected from Canada and one institution from the US. An admissions centre counts as one
request.
When results are released, they will be made available to institutes via an IB secure website, or will be mailed
a paper transcript of grades if the institution does not make use of this electronic service. A candidate’s first
six requests will be accepted without charge if submitted before the deadlines. Of this six, no more than one
institution can be selected from Canada and one institution from the US.
After July 5, IB graduates can request that their results are sent to a university directly by completing the
appropriate transcript request form electronically or sending it to the address provided on the form. A fee will
be charged for each additional request that is submitted regardless of whether any previous requests have
been made on your behalf. For further information on how to submit a request, please
visit http://www.ibo.org/informationfor/alumni/transcripts/
To submit your transcript request electronically, please visit: https://rrs.ibo.org/replacement_orders/
The IB transcript of grades will display the student’s full name, date of birth, the name of the school you
attended, the subjects which they were registered for and the grades achieved for each subject. Under no
circumstances should candidates reveal their PIN to universities or admission centres. -by IB Answers

Wausau East Needs Your Help!
For the last five years, there has been a Lumberjack
Closet at East which helps address clothing, hygiene
and various other needs of our students. We have
given away hundreds of items to students at
absolutely no cost to them!
We are looking for donations of gently used namebrand clothing, toiletries and other items you think a
teenager may want, but might not be able to afford.
So if your teenager has outgrown their clothes,
consider donating them to the Wausau East
Lumberjack Closet - because it will stay in our Eastside community.
Donations can be dropped off during school hours to
the Counseling Office. Cash donations are welcome
and can address special, unique needs that come up
periodically. If you have any questions, please
contact Manee Vongphakdy, 715-2610663. Donations may be tax deductible.
Attention Senior Parents
This fall semester, the East counselors would like
to meet with each senior on their caseload.
Please encourage your child to make an
appointment.
The purpose of the senior meeting is to complete
a credit check to ensure graduation requirements
are met and to discuss his/her plans after high
school. Based on the needs of your child, your
child’s counselor will provide information that will
help them prepare for their next adventure after
East High School!
The information will include two-four year college
programs, the college application process,
employment, armed services information, and
scholarships.
NCAA Eligibility Center
Division I/II Prospective College
Athletes
If a student intends to participate in intercollegiate
athletics at a Division I or II institution, he or she
must register and be certified by the NCAA
Eligibility Center. It is the student’s responsibility
to research college athletic programs and
carefully check and understand the NCAA
requirements.
Students may register during their junior or senior
year in high school on-line at
www.eligibilitycenter.org The student must
have their ACT or SAT test scores sent officially
to the Eligibility Center. The Counseling Office
should be notified of the registration process to
insure that official initial and final transcripts are
sent from the high school.
Since only approved Wausau East High School
core coursework will be considered for eligibility, it
is imperative that students take the appropriate
courses prior to graduation. Since the list may
change, the approved core coursework list should
be checked regularly. Students are responsible
for selecting their courses.
Students are encouraged to meet with their
counselor for additional information and
questions.

Wisconsin Students Go to College (WSG2C)
The WI Department of Instruction (DPI) is once again sponsoring a campaign to help students with the
college application process. The date at Wausau East this year is all day Tuesday, November 1, in
Room D204.
The goal of the program is to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students to pursue a
postsecondary education and to assist high school seniors in completing at least one admissions application
to a two or four year college, university or technical school.
Our goal is for every student in Wisconsin to have the opportunity to make a viable plan for their future.
All interested seniors are encouraged to sign up in the Wausau East Career Center.
