Winter Vacation
Please mark your calendars:
Our annual Winter Program will be held on Friday, December 16th at 6:30 p.m. This event is held at
Reagan High School (4965 S. 20th Street) in the auditorium. All students are part of this performance.
PTA Meeting:
Our PTA will meet next week on Tuesday, December 6th at 6:00 p.m. Childcare will be available.
Sharing is Caring Clothing Bank:
IDEAL will again be offering our “Sharing is Caring Clothing Bank.” This is an opportunity to share
gently used clothing and shoes with other families. We would like to have the clothing bank open
starting next week until the winter break. If you would like to send in donations please send them to the
office during that time period. Families may come in to browse and “shop” the clothing bank beginning
next week. It’s a great time to reuse and recycle gently used clothing items.
First Trimester Report Cards:
The first trimester report cards are coming home this week. The Primary and Elementary students will
have their report cards in their Wednesday folder. Parents please sign and return the gold envelope. All
middle school report cards will be mailed to homes.
Math Vocabulary
- This year Milwaukee Public Schools purchased a new math curriculum for grades K-8. This
curriculum was chosen to meet the Common Core Standards adopted by the state of Wisconsin. The
common core standards are tested using the STAR test three times a year and the Forward Exam once a
year.
- It is important that students master the math vocabulary at each grade level. As they move through the
grades they are expected to know the words and concepts related to the words. Some of these words
may be unfamiliar to you or words you use in a different context than math.

-Compensation is a word used in the 2nd grade math curriculum. This word is generally a positive
word for most adults because your compensation is your pay check! In the 2nd grade curriculum it
does not mean a paycheck. It is a strategy that involves adjusting one addend to a tens number, and
then adjusting the other addend to keep the balance.
-Here is a helpful link as you help your student with their math homework. This site lists and defines
(with pictures) the common core math vocabulary your child learns at IDEAL. It is listed by grade level
and then alphabetically by term.

PLEASE REMEMBER…
-Parents: Please remember to call the school office or send a note if your child is absent.
-Also, please send a note or call the school office by 3:00 p.m. if your child’s pick-up plans change for
the day. We greatly appreciate your support with this matter.
Primary Unit:
-Thanksgiving week is over and we hope that you had lots of time to spend with your family. It’s such a
wonderful time to reflect on the people that we are thankful for in our lives. Now we are back into a full
week of learning and we are getting excited to jump into our next holiday season! There are lots of
important but fun activities we have planned before Winter Break.
-Today, all students in our unit brought home their first report card for this school year. We encourage
you to look over this with your child and explain to them how they are doing. We also encourage you
and your child to make goals for themselves in their next Trimester. This will help them have a focus on
how to improve. Please continue to read with your child each night and talk about what you have read.
(Common Core State Standard: RI.1.2: Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text). These
discussions will allow you to clarify the meaning of unknown words and compare/contrast characters,

events, or settings within a text that you are reading together. This practice will help to strengthen your
child’s comprehension skills.
-As a school, we are working diligently to increase our math scores across all levels. One of the main
focus areas is Algebraic Readiness. Now you may be wondering, how are the primary students
practicing skills in this area? One example that strengthens Algebraic Readiness at our level is by
working with addition and subtraction equations. (Common Core State Standard: 1.OA. 7:
Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction
are true or false). The key for this standard is for the students not to only rush to find the sum or the
difference but to also understand what the equation really means. For example, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5 shows that
both equations have to balance or are the same because the = sign means the “same as”. So I would read
this equation as 5 + 2 is the “same as” or “equal” to 2 + 5. Having these math conversations with your
child during Home Learning will help us reinforce this vocabulary.
-Finally, we want to remind you that the cold weather is upon us. Please make sure that your child is
dressed properly each day. They will need to begin wearing warmer coats, hats, and mittens because we
do go outside for recess every day (unless there is rain or frigid cold). Start planning for boot and snow
pants too, because we entering the month of December.
Elementary Unit:
-The Elementary staff and students welcome Ms. Gerow to the Elementary Unit! She will be
transitioning into the home group teacher for room 12 and Mrs. Leguizamon will become our
schoolwide intervention teacher. Ms. Gerow will be working with all of the Elementary students
through our rotations. We welcome Ms. Gerow to IDEAL and to Elementary!!!
All of our Elementary students are working to change an unhealthy habit in order to become healthier
people. They are recording their data and their health goal sheets are due this Friday, December 2.
Students are required to have 14 days of data. They were given three weeks to complete this
assignment.
6:2:B1 Choose a clear and realistic personal goal.
6:2:B3 Track progress toward goal achievement.
-In science we are using domain specific words to learn about the heart and circulatory system. RI.4.4
Ms. Zuehlke will be teaching Thematic Literacy for our rotations this second trimester. One class each
week will be dedicated to Achieve 3000, an online program focusing on informational text. The second
class will be dedicated to reading and writing skills that are practiced and supported in Achieve 3000.
All Elementary students will be going to the Milwaukee Art Museum next Tuesday, December 6.
Please return your student’s permission slip by Friday of this week. There is no charge for this trip.
This is a kind reminder that all Elementary students are expected to read at home daily. Please sign
your student’s reading log return it each Friday. All students are now reading 30 minutes every
evening. Thank you for your support. Children thrive when home and school work hand in hand.
R.4.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

Middle School:
Hello and welcome to another exciting edition of the middle school section of the heads up.


As the weather outside gets frightful we ask that you dress your student accordingly. We will
be going outside for recess as the weather permits, so hats, coats, boots, and gloves should
be part of every student’s attire.
The new trimester began on 11/28/16. This is a new beginning for everyone. Students make
sure that you are giving your best all day every day. Parents, we ask that you please be aware
that students should have math homework every night and a reading log every week. Report
cards will be mailed home this week.
We are really looking to improve our attendance rate. We want you here all day, every day!
The Rosetta Stone language program has begun! Students who returned papers indicating
their choice of language were assigned. We are excited to implement a new year of this
program and would like to know parent and student thoughts regarding it. It is imperative
that students have headphones for this program. Please make sure that your student has a
pair of headphones readily available.
We would like to take a moment to welcome our part time guest teacher, Ms. Neubauer to
room 10. We are very glad to have her with us.
Debate- We are so excited to announce that IDEAL's teams did very well in their debate on November
19th. Lauren Larson debated as a maverick, meaning she debated on her own without a partner, and won
second place as a team and FIRST place as a speaker! Kaydence Kugel and Ailie Snyder did a great job
and earned third place as a team! We are so proud of these students who spend a whole Saturday a
month debating against other middle school student in policy debate.
Reading and Language Arts- The students are currently reading "A Year Down Yonder" set during the
Great Depression. They went on a lively "train ride" yesterday and will be completing their narrative on
the experience that will be due on Friday. This is their first writing assignment of the new trimester. We
encourage parents to access their child's Google Docs and see what kind of a day their child had while
"riding the rails." Students will be covering these standards during this novel/written assignments:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.2
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text;
provide an objective summary of the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.3

plot).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.7.3
Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant
descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
