Tonkin Highway / Hale Road intersection
Gateway WA will be
constructing a new
interchange at the
intersection of Tonkin
Highway and Roe
Highway, improving
the flow of traffic on
Tonkin Highway.
The existing interchange will be
upgraded to a partial freeway to
freeway interchange, allowing
uninterrupted movement from
Tonkin Highway southbound to
Roe Highway westbound,
reducing overall congestion on
Tonkin Highway.
To improve the safety and efficiency
of Tonkin Highway and the overall
performance at the intersection with
Hale Road, some modifications will
be required.
The right turn movement from
Tonkin Highway southbound to Hale
Road westbound will be unavailable
for those vehicles entering from Roe
Highway via the Tonkin Highway
southbound on-ramp. Bollards
will be in place to prevent this
movement. This change needs to be
made as there is insufficient distance
for vehicles entering from this ramp
to safely weave across through traffic
and enter the right-hand lane to
make this movement.
The right turn movement into Hale
Road west will, however, be retained
for Tonkin Highway southbound
traffic travelling on Tonkin Highway
prior to Roe Highway and
approaching the intersection in the
middle and right hand lanes.
The intersection configuration,
traffic signal design, signs and
pavement markings will be modified
to accommodate these changes.
The number of Tonkin Highway
southbound lanes will increase to
three, north of Hale Road and the
length of the right turn pocket
(for Tonkin Highway southbound
into Hale Road westbound) will
increase by approximately 70 metres
to improve capacity. Pedestrians
and cyclists will be able to cross
the intersection at the eastern and
southern legs.
Traffic wanting to access Hale Road
west of Tonkin Highway, from Roe
Highway, will be able to turn onto
Welshpool Road East and then turn
left onto Hale Road.
