RCS offers a wide array of courses, from helping participants get the
most out of a hobby, to classes designed to expand or cultivate professional skills.
This semester’s Continuing Education brochure is divided into four
areas, with classes listed in chronological order within those areas:
•Aquatics: from tot swimming lessons to Aqua Zumba
•Driving: classes for new and experienced drivers alike
•Home & Lifestyle: explore dog training basics and quilting
•Sports & Fitness: opportunities for health and wellness include
basketball to yoga

Registering for a course
Registration is open to all adults regardless of residency.
Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. The number of participants in each class is limited.
To register for a course:
1. Complete a registration form (found on page 7) for each class.
2. Write a separate check payable to RCS Central Schools for the
registration fee for each course.
3. Either mail the check and registration form to RCS Continuing
Education, P.O. Box 100, Ravena, NY 12143 or register in person on
Wednesday, Feb. 24 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the lobby of the Aquatics
Center at the high school, Route 9W, Ravena.
Registrants will not receive confirmation of registration,
but will receive notification if the class they register for
is canceled.
SENIOR CITIZENS
Senior citizens living in the RCS school district will receive
a 10-percent discount off classes where indicated in this
brochure. To receive the discount, a senior citizen should indicate on the registration form if he or she is 65 years or older
and include his or her birth date.

AQUATICS COURSES
RCS offers a variety of aquatics programming for people of all
abilities. Whether you are an adult who wants to get into better
shape in the pool or a parent who wants your child to learn swimming skills before he or she can walk, RCS has a course for you.
MORNING SWIM PROGRAM
•Dates: Mondays-Fridays; March-August
•Time: 5:30-7:20 a.m.
•Location: Aquatics Center
•Fee: RCS residents – $110, Non-residents – $220
The morning swim program is geared toward professionals
and exercise enthusiasts in our community who want to jumpstart their day and fulfill their exercise needs.
LIFEGUARD PREP
•Dates: Seven-week sessions begin on Mar. 6.
Classes meet Sundays
•Time: 2-3 p.m.
•Location: Aquatics Center
•Fee: $55 for RCS residents, $60 for Non-residents.
You must be 13+ to take this course.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS
School closings are announced through the local radio
stations and on www.rcscsd.org. On days when regular RCS
classes are canceled due to inclement weather or other
circumstances, Continuing Education classes will also be
canceled. Canceled classes will be made up. Class dates are
subject to change if closings occur.

REFUNDS
The Continuing Education Program is self-supporting.
The registration fee will be refunded if a course is cancelled or if a student withdraws from a course before the start
of the first class.
No refunds will be made once a course has started.
An attempt will be made to notify any registrant whose
class is cancelled. Registrants should also check the RCS
website for updates.

The class will build on basic swimming skills to develop
techniques in freestyle and breaststroke. It will develop the
strength and endurance needed for the lifeguarding physical prerequisite in swimming, treading water, and the brick retrieval.
This course will also cover some basic water rescue techniques
taught in both Red Cross and Boy Scouting lifeguarding classes.
A minimum of two students is required for the class to run.

PARENT-TOT SWIM

Parent-Tot Swim classes are open to parents and their children between the ages of 18 months and four years. This is a

RED CROSS LEARN TO SWIM
•Dates: Seven-week session begins Mar. 12.
Classes meet Saturdays.
•Time: 4-4:40 p.m. for Level 1, 4:45-5:25 p.m. for
Levels 2 & 3, 5:30-6:10 p.m. for Levels 4,5 & 6.
•Location: Aquatics Center
•Fee: $55 for RCS residents, $60 for non-residents.
This course is for children
ages 5-12.
A water safety instructor
oversees teaching this program.
Children are introduced to personal
safety and basic water skills appropriate to their level of experience. This class promotes confidence in the beginner skills and
emphasizes safety in and around the water. Adults do not have
to accompany children in the pool, but are required to be at
poolside during the lesson. Make-up lessons are not available.
Sessions will be divided by the ability level of the participants. Swimmers can be tested at 3 p.m. on the first day of
lessons or during open swim the Friday night before.
PRE-SCHOOL SWIM LESSONS
•Dates: Seven-week session begins Mar. 12.
Classes meet Saturdays.
•Time: 3:20-3:50 p.m.
•Location: Aquatics Center
•Fee: $55 for RCS residents, $60 for non-residents.
This course is for children ages 4-5.
•Instructor: Chris Dottino
This is a seven-week course designed for children age 4-5
without the assistance of a parent or guardian. Children will
work on the basics of swimming that include but are not limited
to: blowing bubbles, front and back floating with and with out
support, kicking, and paddling. Swim belts will be used and
provided during the class for the participants to use. We will
maintain a one instructor to five children ratio during the class.
Class is limited to 15 seats.
A minimum of three students is required for the class to run.

PAULINE’S AQUA ANIMAL CHALLENGE
•Dates: Eight-week session begins Mar. 21. Four-week
session begins May 23. Classes meet Mondays.

Pauline’s Aqua Animal Challenge is a total-body workout that
will be done in the shallow area of the pool. You will move to the

Fees cover a year’s worth (Sept. 1 - Aug. 31) of
unlimited access to the RCS Aquatics Center during
scheduled open and lap swimming times. Fees are
pro-rated.

AQUA FITNESS

(2 nights), $35 for RCS residents (1 night), $40 for Nonresidents (1 night), Senior discount available
•Instructor: Rosie McDonough
Aqua Fitness is a moderate- to high-level aerobic workout,
including a deep-water jogging segment. Water workouts allow
participants to shed pounds and firm muscles, but are easier
on the back and joints than jogging or high-impact aerobics.
Registrants who sign up for just one night should indicate
which night they will attend. The class is limited to 35 students.
Participants are required to supply their own jogging belts.
AQUA ZUMBA
•Dates: 10-week session begins on Mar. 30.
Classes meet Wednesdays
•Time: 5-6 p.m.
•Location: Aquatics Center
•Fee: $80 for 10 weeks

This Zumba aquatic revolution offers an aquatic workout
with all the benefits, fun and excitement of a Zumba Class.
Aqua Zumba works on aerobic endurance, muscular
resistance, flexibility and joint mobility in a high-intensity,
low-impact environment.
Aquatic exercise is ideal for strengthening after injury,
conditioning for older or out-of-shape individuals, or people
of all fitness levels who love the water and want to work out
to the international rhythms of Zumba fitness in an energetic,
pool-party atmosphere.
Please wear water shoes and bring bottled water and towel.
RED CROSS LIFEGUARD COURSE
•Dates: Three sessions must all be attended:

•Fee: $250 (must be paid before class begins)
•Instructor: Reay Mahler
This course prepares lifeguard candidates to recognize
emergencies, respond, and effectively prevent drowning and
other incidents. Class content includes lifeguarding, CPR for
the professional rescuer, AED and first-aid skill practice.
This course is open for anyone 15 years or older (proof of
age is required at the time of registration).
A qualifying pre-test is given on the first day of class. Prospective students must:
• Be able to swim 300
yards continuously,
using either a breast
or crawl stroke;
• Be able to surface
dive to a depth of
7-10 feet;
• And be able to swim
40 feet underwater without surfacing while retrieving
rings from the pool bottom.
Class participants must pass the prerequisite skills test to
enroll in the course. Anyone not passing the pre-test will
have their fee refunded.
The course’s registration fee covers the swim test and the
certification filing fee to the Red Cross.

Manual. This one book has all the CPR and AED information as well as Lifeguarding and First Aid.

BASKETBALL (CO-ED)
BEGINNER HULA HOOPING
If you enjoy playing basketball but do not belong to a team,
this class is for you. Teams will be formed at each class. Due
to high demand, all participants MUST pre-register.
Hula hooping is a low-impact cardio exercise that improves
posture, flexibility and core strength. You can burn up to 420
calories during this one-hour class. No hula hooping experience is necessary. Hula hoops will be provided, but you can
always bring your own. We will be hooping on the waist, hips
and off-body while moving and dancing with the hoop. Maximum of 25, ages 10 and up.

DRIVING COURSES
DEFENSIVE DRIVING

The Department of Motor
Vehicles’ points/insurance reduction program is a six-hour,
classroom-only program. Participants will watch a video of real
case studies and discuss defensive
driving strategies.
Those who complete the
program may receive a 10-percent reduction on their renewal of vehicle liability and collision
insurance for three consecutive years.
Participants who also take secondary school driver education
will receive an additional 10-percent reduction on their insurance
upon the completion of that course.
Drivers who complete the course will also receive a four-point
penalty reduction off their driving records from the previous
18 months.
Must meet 10-student minimum enrollment.
FIVE-HOUR PRE-LICENSING

This course is required of all drivers prior to taking the New
York State road test. Students must have a valid New York State
