Rick Place, MD, FACEP Candidate Statement-Secretary The past few years have seen a significant shift in the practice of pediatric emergency medicine. Even as our specialty began to crystallize within free-standing children’s hospitals, it is now beginning to devolve into isolated islands in the community. This is occurring even as a parallel effort, led by ACEP and AAP, encourages general emergency departments to raise their standard of pediatric care (i.e. Guidelines for Care in the Pediatric Emergency Department). Over the past 9 years, I have had the honor of leading my group (Inova Fairfax Hospital in the Washington DC area) as they transitioned from a paradigm of caring for children in a general ED setting to a stand-alone, round the clock pediatric emergency department. This is an experience familiar to many members of this section; each institution is evolving through a similar process, with variations depending upon available resources and local philosophies, and each institution is in a different phase of this transition. I have developed a strong professional interest in this process and I would like to use this leadership position to help further the advancement of more community oriented pediatric emergency medicine, while partnering with larger institutions that provide so much leadership yet which often have a slightly different mission. Helping to lead our specialty as it matures into the community setting is a passion that I would very much like to embrace over the next several years. RICK C.
