CURRICULUM Alignment BEYOND THE HURT THE ONTARIO CURRICULUM HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION RESPECT EDUCATION BEYOND THE HURT (BTH) – Bullying Prevention HEALTHY LVING STRAND GRADE 7 BTH GRADE 7 Describe the benefits and dangers associated with computers and other technologies Assess the impact of bullying or harassment, identify ways of preventing or resolving it LIVING SKILLS (IS) – GRADE 7 Communicate effectively, using verbal or non-verbal means, and interpret information accurately BTH assists in understanding potential dangers that are connected to the use of the internet and other technologies including cyber bullying BTH examines the impact of the different types of bullying and harassment through the use of activities, videos and discussions which in turn helps youth to understand ways to prevent and resolve it BTH explores how various communication skills, including assertiveness, assist youth when handling relationships in a peer or adult context HEALTHY LIVING STRAND GRADE 8 BTH GRADE 8 Identify and assess situations that could lead to injury or death, how to reduce the risk and avoid dangerous situations Identify factors that can help individuals of all gender identities and sexual orientations develop a positive self-concept Analyse the impact of violent behaviours on the target, perpetrator and bystanders and describe the role of support services in preventing violence BTH assists in understanding potential dangers related to bullying and harassment and the use of personal prevention and avoidance strategies BTH demonstrates how a supportive and respectful environment can promote the development of a positive self-concept for all individuals BTH examines the variables that influence the impact of bullying and harassment from the perspectives of the person being targeted, the perpetrator and the witness(es). Review of the different types of support in preventing violence from the individual, family, community and societal levels. HEALTHY LIVING STRAND GRADE 9 BTH GRADE 9 Demonstrate an understanding of the benefits and risks of electronic communication and technologies, and strategies to ensure safety Describe skills and strategies to prevent or respond to situations of bullying and harassment BTH assists in understanding potential dangers that are connected to the use of the internet and other technologies including cyber bullying. Empowers students to help themselves or others via support from schools and community agencies BTH examines healthy intervention/prevention responses to situations of bullying and harassment LIVING SKILLS (PS, IS) – GRADE 9 Use adaptive, management, and coping skills to help respond to various challenges Communicate effectively, using verbal or non-verbal means, and interpret information accurately BTH provides skills/strategies to help respond to bullying and harassment, and empowers students to seek support BTH Youth Facilitator training offers youth the opportunity to develop enhanced communication skills and to assist youth who are struggling with the impact of bullying or harassment HEALTHY LIVING STRAND GRADE 10 Analyze situations involving conflict with others and apply appropriate conflict resolution strategies Explain how misconceptions about sexuality may cause harm, and how they can be responded to fairly BTH GRADE 10 BTH identifies various strategies to handle the escalating conflict that can contribute to bullying and harassment incidents and the impact of using verbal and non-verbal responses BTH explores potential responses to harassing or abusive behaviour, including when this behaviour targets LGBT youth, with reference to Human Rights legislation HEALTHY LIVING STRAND GRADE 11 Describe how to use personal and interpersonal skills to deal with personally stressful situations or help others deal with stressful situations BTH GRADE 11 BTH provides skills and strategies to respond to bullying or harassing situations.
