The sidewall gage specifications for your bin appear on the sidewall sheet layout tables on pages 30 - 31. The general material specifications for your bin are as follows. [10] 10 BIN WALLS All wall sheets are of corrugated, galvanized steel with 2.66” [67.56 mm] corrugation. Wall sheets have 0.90 oz. [275 g/m2] per square foot zinc coating (G-90 designation). 2.66 corrugation sheets have 32” [812.8 mm] vertical coverage. Horizontal coverage of wall sheets is 112-1/2” [2857.5 mm]. All light gage sidewall sheets have hill and valley bolting on vertical seams. Heavy gage sheets have valley only bolting on vertical seams. All 5/16” and 3/8” bin bolts are electro-galvanized grade 8.2 with self-sealing injection molded washers. DOORS On 2.66 corrugated bins, a single 32” [813 mm] door is standard on all sizes and a (2) ring 64” [1626 mm] walk door is available as an option on most diameters. Further details on both doors are found in the door installation pages of this manual, on pages 32 - 43. The standard location for a 2.66” bin 32” door is in the second ring from the bottom, and the standard location for the 64” door is in the second and third ring from the bottom. All 64” doors have (3) inner panels and an outer door cover. All 32” doors have (2) inner panels and an outer door cover. For allowable door placements see the tables on pages 32 - 33. (1) ring doors are placed in the second sidewall ring from the bottom. (2) ring doors are placed in the second and third sidewall rings from the bottom. On 24’ [7.36 m] diameter and smaller 2.66” corrugated bins, a (2) ring door with auger panel opening is available. An auger shield is required at extra cost. All welds are of non-rusting silicone bronze. Grain Bin Sidewall 017061 2-09 [1] 2 Specifications DESIGN CRITERIA Bins are designed to store free-flowing, noncorrosive whole grains with a bulk density of 48 lbs/ft3 [768.5 kg/m3] (60 lbs/bushel) or less. Bins are designed to be filled through the center roof opening only, and to be emptied from the center. Any off-center loadings should be used only for clean-out after discharge has been complete to the angle of repose. Sectional sweep augers with sections no longer than half the radius must be used on the 42’ [12.8 m] diameter and larger bins. The center section should be completely cleaned out before the next auger section is added. Have your builder make all non-bin equipment in excess of company’s recommendations, like LEGS, WALK-WAYS, SPOUTING and CONVEYORS self supporting. WARNING! DO NOT OVERFILL THE BIN ROOF AREA! Overfilling the bin roof area prevents proper air movement through roof vents and may also cause roof damage or failure! You must furnish the adequate ventilation area to match the Cubic Foot per Minute output of the aeration fan installed on your bin. A rule of thumb would be, no more than 1000 Cubic Feet per Minute [30m3/min] per 1 Square Foot [0.093m2] vent opening. WARNING! When you run your aeration fans, make certain your VENTS ARE OPEN and kept clean of all debris and frozen matter. An aeration system can, without proper management, create a greater load on a roof than equipment or snow and can damage the roof. WARNING! Installation of accessories or equipment in or on a grain bin that would overstress the structure in any manner will void the Warranty. If you do not have specific recommendations from Mfs/York/Stormor, where additional loading is involved. Please contact Mfs/York/Stormor Engineering Department before installing any such appurtenances or equipment. For all these “bearing type” sidewall sheet connections, a “snug tight” condition is sufficient to ensure structural soundness, where “snug-tight” is defined as the tightness attained by several impacts on an impact wrench, or the full effort of a worker with an ordinary spud wrench that brings the connected sheets into firm contact. A properly tightened bolt must have its seal washer fully seated in the hole and the sheets fully drawn together to produce a water-tight seal. WARNING! ALWAYS LOAD OR UNLOAD THE BIN FROM THE CENTER! This creates an even load on the structure. Only use your intermediate sumps for clean-up. Off-center loading and unloading creates excessive STRESSES and can cause failure. All bins should be filled at the center of the peak ring with an auger or spout of adequate length to allow grain to drop straight down into the bin. A leveling device is strongly recommended. CHECK DELIVERY Your bin has been carefully checked before shipment. However, you should check your shipment upon arrival using the provided Packing List to insure it is complete. CAUTION: All galvanized steel is subject to oxidation, sometimes called “white rust” when exposed to moisture from any source. Plenty of care should be taken to protect sidewall sheets and roof sheets. INSIDE STORAGE IS ADVISABLE. When on the job site, sheets should be place on edge far enough apart to let air to circulate freely. WARNING! Don’t cut openings in bins! This reduces the structural strength of the unit and can cause partial or complete failure. Grain Bin Sidewall 017061 2-09 [1] 3 3 Concrete / Site Location BIN SITE LOCATION Check your site locations for possible problems with the following: 1 High wind or Snow load area 4 Local codes/permits 7 Railroads 2 Waterways and run off 5 Power lines 8 Seismic load 3 Poor soil conditions/soil problems 6 Highways 9 Hopper Bins CHOOSING A BIN SITE Consideration should be given to convenience in loading and unloading and accessibility to existing and planned facilities. The site should be level, on firm soil, with adequate drainage. Any fill used in leveling the site MUST BE well compacted to prevent uneven settling from weight of the foundation, bin and contents. After the site is completely level, use 1” to 2” [25mm - 50mm] of fill sand to act as a cushion under the concrete slab. Standard foundation drawings and specs are furnished by MFS/YORK/STORMOR showing soil bearing pressures required. It is the obligation of the purchaser to obtain a soil bearing test and ascertain that the foundation has sufficient strength for a capacity filled bin. Unless the finished foundation is level and true, and the site properly graded for water drainage, failure of the foundation could result. This is not covered by the MFS/YORK/STORMOR warranty. At the time your soil is being compacted and the foundation is being poured, make certain that the work is being done in exact accordance with your soil engineer’s specifications. Remember - if your soil isn’t right, your foundation could TIP AND CRACK - if your foundation isn’t right, your bin could fail. The foundation drawings on the following pages are intended as a guide only and are not to be interpreted as “firm” instruction. If at a later date, the bin is increased in height, the foundation may not be adequate. Anchor bolts should be to specifications and be set when pouring the foundation as improper anchoring will give you a WEAK structure. The bin is ROUND and to keep it round, the anchor bolts should follow a SCRIBED CIRCLE with the correct chord dimensions between the anchor bolts. Instructions The base ring of the bin must rest firmly on the foundation with absolutely no overhang. 1. Lay out the foundation by driving a small pipe to mark the center of the pad. The top of the pipe should be the height of the foundation. 2. Using the pipe for a center pivot, you can use a chain with a sharp stake attached to the outer end to scribe on the ground the foundation diameter. (A board may be used instead of the chain.) 3. After pouring the concrete, and while it is still soft, locate your anchor bolts. Use the center pipe and chain again to mark the correct diameter to set the anchor bolts. Use a measured chain (or chord) to get the correct spacing between holes. The foundation site should be well drained and free of vegetation and/or debris. 2. Foundation(s) should be on undisturbed soil or engineered compacted backfill. 3. A soil and foundation (Geotechnical) investigation should be conducted for each site to confirm the soil bearing capacity. 4. Foundation Design is based on the specified allowable soil bearing capacity. 5. The concrete shall have a minimum compressive strength of 3,000 psi at 28 days. a 6. Concrete should be allowed to cure 7 days before starting tank assembly and 28 days before filling the bin. 7. Concrete should be kept level to ±1/8” in 10’ and 1/2” across the diameter. b High spots or debris should be removed before setting the bin. 8. Anchor bolts need to be properly located based on the information provided in order to keep the tank round, and to ensure structural integrity of the bin while guaranteeing effective transfer of wall forces down to the foundation. Minimum recommended cast-in-place anchors for standard conditions shall be A307 9” x 3” hooked bolts of the required diameter: 3/4” for Commercial Flat-Bottom Bins (1” required for 60’ and larger bins with a side draw) and Commercial Hopper Tanks, 5/8” for Unstiffened Grain Bins, and 1/2” for Unstiffened Hopper Bins. The hook of the bolt must be placed below horizontal rebar for proper transfer of forces. Alternately, a hex-head bolt with flat washers or an epoxy adhesive anchor of equivalent strength may be used. Check with epoxy anchor vendor or manufacturer for strength ratings and for proper installation instructions. 9. All reinforcing rod for concrete reinforcement shall conform to ASTM A615, Grade 60. 10. Rebar should lap a distance equal to (Rebar Dia. x 24). Minimum allowable lap is 18” - i.e: #6 Rebar has a diameter of 6/8”: 24 x .75” = 18”, or an 18” lap. c 11. Estimates for Rebar do NOT include allowances for the lap. 12. The stiffener and sidewall must be supported over tunnels. 13. Concrete yardage figures do NOT include any allowances for aeration trenches or tunnels. 14. Ring reinforcement must be continuous around the tunnels. 15. To help minimize potential frost heave, the bottom of the footings should be at or below the frost line. Alternately, the footings could be supported on non-expansive fill materials (such as crushed stone or gravel) which are not susceptible to frost heave, extending below the frost line; however, some local building codes do require the footing to extend below the frost line. 16. Foundation Design is based on an allowable soil bearing capacity of 3,000 psf for unstiffened Grain Bins and 3,500 psf for Commercial Stiffened Bins. d 17. The foundation details in this manual are to be considered general in nature and are intended only as a guide. This design is for standard external loading conditions: 90 mph wind speeds and seismic zone 0 earthquake loads. It is the owner’s responsibility to provide an appropriate site and foundation design for the adequate support of the grain bin. MFS/YORK/STORMOR assumes no responsibility for results arising from these suggestions. Check with the MFS engineering department to obtain contact information for foundation design and soil testing professionals. a [The concrete shall have a compressive strength of 20.67 MPa at 28 days] b [Concrete should be kept level to ±3 mm in 3000 mm and 12 mm across the diameter] c [Minimum allowable lap is 450 mm - i.e: #6 Rebar has a diameter of 19 mm: 24 x 19 mm = 450 mm, or a 450 mm lap.] d [Found. design is based on an allowable soil bearing capacity of 143.64 kPa for unstiffened grain bins and 167.6 kPa for stiffened bins.] Grain Bin Sidewall 017061 2-09 [1] 19 4 Pre-Assembly 4 SIDEWALL SHEET IDENTIFICATION The bin wall sheets are color coded at the ends on the bottom corners of the sheets for simple reference as follows: [20] 20 Color Sidewall Gage Color Sidewall Gage Color Sidewall Gage Green / Gray 19 gage Yellow 14 gage Brown 10 gage Gray 18 gage Yellow / Black 13 gage White 8 gage Red 17 gage Black 12 gage Blue / Yellow 15 gage Orange 11 gage Color coding is on the bottom (2) corners of the sidewall sheet and a stamped sheet identification mark is in the middle of the sheet between the color codes on the inside face. FILLING THE BIN 1 Make certain everyone is out of the bin and before you start filling the bin. 2 It is generally acceptable to start aeration fans after a 2’ - 3’ [610mm-914mm] depth has been obtained. 3 Continue to fill the bin to the desired level based on its use. 4 Maximum grain level should be 1” [2.54 cm] below the eave. LOADING AND UNLOADING BINS When you load or unload grain, always do it from the center! This creates an even load on the structure. Only use your intermediate sumps for CLEAN-UP. Off-center loading or unloading creates excessive STRESSES and can cause failure! All bins should be filled at the center of the peak ring with an auger or spout of adequate length to let grain drop straight down into the bin. Grain Bin Sidewall 017061 2-09 [1] 7 Operation USE AND STORAGE It is beyond the scope of this manual to instruct the operator in proper aeration procedures. We advise that the operator consult with his state university and local extension service plus draw on his own experience to best tailor his aeration operation to suit his needs. Below are several comments that could prove helpful. 1 Proper air exhaust area must be provided during fan operation to prevent roof damage (note decal installed on the outer door panel). Some sources recommend a minimum of 1 Square Foot [0.093m3] exhaust area for every 1000 CFM [30m3/min.] of air introduced into the bin. We advocate the use of optional roof vents for this purpose as they are weather and pest tight and let the operator to keep the roof manhole opening closed to weather during operation. Vents should be regularly inspected to insure that they have not been obstructed by chaff or ice during cold weather. 2 Proper air exhaust openings reduce the amount of condensation that occurs on the interior of the roof sheets during operations. Condensation should be regularly checked to insure that dripping into the top grain layer is not severe enough to cause spoilage. 3 Grain management is the key to proper drying and aeration of a stored crop. The fruits of your year’s labor are in your storage bin. The good operator frequently checks the temperature and moisture content of the grain during drying and storage operations. The result of these checks allow the operator to modify his drying and storage procedures before any grain goes out of condition. MFS/YORK/STORMOR recommends probing for moisture content and temperature at least (1) time a week during storage. 4 It is normally advisable to aerate grain stored after drying for any period of time. It is desirable to keep the stored grain within 15° F [9° C] of the ambient temperature to reduce moisture migration and resultant heating spoilage. Most operations, however, will not reduce the grain temperature below freezing. Reduction of the grain temperature within the bin during the winter months also reduces insect activity and resulting damage. 5 Certain days are not conducive to aeration as the relative humidity may exceed the equilibrium moisture content humidity of the stored grain, theoretically adding moisture back into the kernel. Consult your local extension service for further information. 6 In areas of the country where ambient temperatures are not low enough to reduce winter insect activity, it may be desirable to fumigate the stored grain. For proper and SAFE fumigation techniques, consult your local extension service. 7 It is ALWAYS advisable to have (3) PEOPLE involved, (2) on the outside and (1) inside, when entering a questionable bin/storage circumstance! The person in the bin should be secured or fastened to a safety rope with the (2) persons outside capable of lifting that person out without entering the bin. (1) person outside cannot do this, and cannot go for help and maintain preliminary aid. Grain Bin Sidewall 017061 2-09 [1] 57 7 Operation WARNING! DO NOT ENTER THIS BIN WHEN IT IS BEING LOADED OR UNLOADED! OBSERVE ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS NOTED IN THE OPERATOR’S MANUAL! 58 UNLOADING THE BIN 1 Grain must be unloaded from the center of the bin to maintain uniform loading on the sidewalls. Off center unloading may void the warranty of your bin. Center gates must be opened first and the intermediate sumps must not be used until all the grain that will has flowed by gravity through the center opening. If your center sump becomes blocked, consult MFS/YORK/STORMOR Engineering Department for unloading recommendations. Heed the warning decal on page 7 of this manual and on your access doors when unloading. 2 After all grain has flowed by gravity through the center unload sump, it is acceptable to open and drain the intermediate sumps to create a valley near the door for installation and starting of a sweep auger. 3 When inside the bin, installing a sweep auger or cleaning, LOCK OUT all unload equipment power! NEVER enter a bin when unload equipment is operating, as you may become entangled in the sweep or the unload auger! Failure to heed this warning may result in serious personal injury or death! 4 MFS/YORK/STORMOR recommends on bins 42’ diameter and larger where (2) section sweep augers are used, that the inner sweep section be used to make a preliminary pass around the bin before using the full length sweep. This will result in more uniform stresses on the walls and foundation anchorage of these larger bins. 5 Do not unload from the side discharge system and the center bottom discharge at the same time. (Do not use (2) side-discharge systems to unload at the same time.)
