Issue 10 PAR AVION News from Sauveterre INTRODUCTION One of the girls summed up a term at Sauveterre quite well whilst we were hiking in the Pyrenees last weekend; "...even though it's only been ten weeks it feels like we have had a whole year at Sauveterre as we have done so much stuff!". A wonderful accolade for us as a school, and thinking back to Heathrow Airport in April a lot has certainly happened since the first time the girls all met and intrepidly jumped on a plane to the South of France. This second half of term in particular has flown by, and the amount of French spoken by the girls has been remarkable. It will take a while for it all to sink in but once the dust has settled at the Château this group of girls leave behind a wonderful legacy. The challenge now for all of them is to keep up their French over the next few years as well as (and possibly more importantly) maintain the close friendships they have all made during their time in France. Bonnes vacances à tous! Girls who are competing in the events should arrive dressed in sports kit and make their way to the Sauveterre tent – the one with the French flag flying above it! – where they will receive a programme for the day and a competitors t-shirt in the colour of their group. Events begin at 11 a.m. and finish around 3:30 p.m. We have packed some French sunshine in the suitcases to bring back with us so we’re hoping for a lovely day! PEINTURE MURALE The art scholars have been focusing on a very special project with Mlle Rodrigues this term after I set them the challenge of creating a mural for the wall of our largest classroom. The girls each submitted a design on paper which followed the brief of incoporating lots of French clichés into the picture. The shortlisted designs included a boulangerie and a café proving once again that the first thing about France that always comes to mind is inevitably food related! After serious debate and much reflection we chose Sienna de Gale’s illustration of a Parisian street scene as our favourite and the pupils have been working tirelessly over the last few weeks to bring the design to life. The finished result is hugely impressive and a wonderful reflection of all the hard work they have put in. We look forward to enjoying it for many years to come. How would we be able to keep the children entertained and more importantly, still learning French? Well perhaps by replacing the office and classrooms with a boucherie, a boulangerie, a pharmacie, a musée and a salle de concert. An entire village was created at the Château at the end of term and the pupils spent the whole day completing role plays in French split into groups of shopkeepers and customers. When they had finished their shopping the girls could relax with a game of pétanque in the village square, visit the esthéticienne for a manicure or wander down the Rue des artistes to have a look around the museum where artwork from the term was displayed and guides were available to point out the most interesting pieces. At midday everyone gathered at the Bistro du Château and a wonderful four-course lunch was served. Even the gappies has been transformed : they had managed to grow very impressive moustaches and had morphed into stereotypical French waiters complete with stripy tops and berets! The village concert took place later that afternoon and was totally sold-out! The ticket office had done a roaring trade all day so all the ‘villagers’ either performed or were in the audience. The children thoroughly embraced the spirit of the day and threw themsleves into all the activities. It was inspiring to hear them speaking French in so many different contexts and having so much fun doing so. France is currently hosting the UEFA European Championship so flags, chants and general football mania have taken over the whole country. The Sauveterrians have been joining in too by building model football stadiums and writing poetry to support Les Bleus! Special congratulations go to Lucinda Schueler, Amelia Fuller, Antonia Norris, Zara Chick and Connie Rees-Mogg who all did extremely well correctly predicting match scores. Go, go, go, c’est pour l’Euro, Go, go, go, c’est pour les plus beaux! C’est la France. Elle ne fait pas de cadeaux, En plus elle est immense, C’est comme ça l’Euro! MERCI LES GAPPIES A massive thank you to Ally, Bianca, Emma, Imo and Kat for looking after us this term! Here are some of their highlights!
