Dwight has always pursued creative endeavors. This currently includes his glass art as well as writing poems. His initial training was in architectural design and he currently works as an electrician. He feels the experience in both of these fields has helped him with his concepts of design as well as the work ethic he applies to his art. Another theme throughout his artistic history is that he likes to push the limits. Dwight has pursued working in glass the last 6 years. He initially did glass blowing, but it was hot work. It was considering a project with laser cuts and the related piece of equipment that was over 1 million dollars that influenced him to instead do more with glass. Two of the techniques he uses are fusing and slumping (melting and pouring glass). Both of these techniques allow him to work with glass yet not have to work in a hot area. These techniques are found within a complex arena where knowledge of the chemical properties of each color of glass is essential in completing a functional work of art – – that doesn't break, bubble, or get covered with a white film! He uses a type of firing that is a controlled 12 hour bake with variable temperatures throughout the duration that work with the needs of the glass. It was produced by adding four separate layers. It then required four 12 hour firings, one after each layer. The piece was only two days old when he brought it to the April meeting. He plans to frame it with saguaro bones and back light it with appropriately colored LED lights. Dwight expressed his thanks to the members of Mesa Art League for recognizing his piece and giving him the honor of Mesa Art League's Artist of the Month! Thanks, Rosalie MEMBER NEWS - WE NEED NEW VOLUNTEERS We are still looking for help with Demos and Critiques. Rosalie will not be doing Demo after June. Please volunteer. Looking for interesting people to come to MAL and do one hour demos 8 or 9 times per year. Also would like someone to step up to help with critiques. Rosalie will not be at every meeting and we need members to take over at these times. See Loralee, our president, if you are interested in helping our league. It had both successes and failures. Some Saturdays were packed with our members and others empty. Members signed up but sometimes didn’t show up and at some shows we had too many artists. The space was over crowded. Diane kicked off the first Saturday with ATC cards. Rosalie was on-hand painting beautiful portraits. Dwight sold some glass wear. Ted Weischmeyer sold the most. The MAL space is free compliments of MacFest. Next year must be different to increase sales by members and profits for MAL. But How? We want to hear your idea’s!!
