Academic Service

The Jacksonville University, Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences,
School of Orthodontics received favorable recognition from the American Board of
Orthodontics for incentivizing students to become board-certified (January 2016)

Dr. Alarbi and Dr. Zhang coordinated JU Ortho's participation in the NIH funded
project (project number U19DE022516-03, project leader Dr. Gregg H Gilbert) led by
Dr. Greg Huang and the National Dental Practice-based Research Network.

Hearing Association chapter. (2014–2016)

Dr. Edge was invited to serve on the American Speech-Language-Hearing

Dr. Edge was invited to serve on the American Speech-Language-Hearing

Dr. Edge obtained Orton-Gillingham Literacy Training Certification, a multi-sensory
program that incorporates auditory, kinesthetic, and visual learning pathways. (July

Dr. Gipson obtained an Acute/Critical Care Nursing Knowledge professional (CCRNK) Certification. CCRN-K certification denotes to the public those practitioners

possessing a clearly defined body of knowledge called acute/critical care nursing.

Dr. Gipson attended the Florida Organization of Nurse Executives Research
Conference in Orlando Florida. (November 2015)

Dr. Hausenblas presented at Jacksonville University's 2015 Fall Conference. Her
presentation was titled, Textbook Writing 101: How to write a textbook from start to
finish. (August 2015)

Dr. Kavanagh developed and implemented a sophomore level (first nursing course),
Health assessment course that provided experiential learning experience to cultivate
communication skills, understand cultural diversity, and identify health needs for the
development and implementation of a teaching plan for refugees. (Fall 2015).

Dr. Kavanagh manages the ongoing Baptist Health Residency Program at
Jacksonville University. (Fall 2015).

Dr. Kavanagh conducted the Baptist Medical Center Ebola Training for Healthcare
Professionals at the BRCHS STAR Center. (Fall 2015).

Dr. Kavanagh conducted the Duval Department of Health Training Emergency
Response at the BRCHS STAR Center. (Fall 2015).

Dr. Morgan, Dr. Edmonds, Dr. MacGregor and Assistant Professor Swan served as
program directors for the 2016 Sigma Theta Tau Lambda Rho Research Conference,
Caring for a Diverse World. (February 2016).

Dr. Morgan serves as President of the Lambda Rho chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the
Honor Society for Nursing. (2016).

Dr. Morgan serves as Treasurer of the Northeast Florida chapter of the American
College of Nurse Midwives. (2016).

Dr. Morgan was asked to be a reviewer for the Journal for Nurse Practitioners.
(2016).

Dr. Morgan and Dr. Edmonds served as voting representatives for the Lambda Rho
chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, House of Delegates, Las Vegas, NV. (November 2015).

Dr. Morgan is a CAPTAIN in the US Navy Reserve and provided medical care to
active duty, dependents and retirees at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center
in Bethesda MD for two weeks. (December 2015-January 2016).Dr. Othman
received Dental Teaching Permit for from the FL Board of Dentistry. (January 2016).

Dr. Othman received full certification from the American Board of Orthodontics. They
now are members of the ABO (Diplomates). (February 2016)

Dr. Rillstone gave a workshop entitled, Mindfulness Moments: A Stress Release
Time, for the Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences. (November 16,
2015).

Dr. Rillstone gave a workshop entitled, Mindfulness Moments for Stress Reduction,
for the Center for Teaching & Learning for Faculty at Jacksonville University.
(February 15, 2016).

Dr. Rillstone will be an integral member of the team to bring the Green Dot
Bystander Violence Intervention program to JU. (Training April 5-9, 2016).

Dr. Sapienza was invited to attend the Lake Nona Institute Impact Forum for health
care innovators and thought leaders. Orlando, FL. (February 24-26, 206).

Dr. Tabbaa received full certification from the American Board of Orthodontics. They
now are members of the ABO (Diplomates). (September 2015)

Dr. Wingate will attend the Council on Academics in Communication Sciences and
Disorders Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. (March 30 to April 1, 2016).

Dr. Jeff Wight presented at the “BRCHS Lunch and Learn”: Introducing the Exercise
is Medicine (EIM) initiative at JU (November, 2015).

Dr. Zhang completed the Orofacial Pain Mini-Residency Program held by the
University of Kentucky, Department of Orofacial Pain. (December 2015).
Community Service

Dr. Alarbi and Orthodontic Residents volunteered their services for the Mission of
Mercy Project, 2016 FLA-MOM event. (April 22-23, 2016).

Dr. Edge was interviewed by reporter Candace Moody (The Florida Times-Union) for
her story, Work Wanted: Looking to start a career? Speech-language pathologists
are in demand, which was published in The Florida Times-Union. (December 15,
2015).

Dr. Edge is a member of the JU-Brooks Rehabilitation Supervisory Network.

Dr. Edge is a member of the Jacksonville Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Dr. Edge serves as a GRASP/JU liaison by participating in GRASP outreach
projects such as town hall meetings, open houses, and community partnership
dinners (2015–2016).

Dr. Hausenblas was interviewed by reporter Amy Capetta (Yahoo Health) for her
story, Fidgeting may offset the life-shortening effects of sitting, which was published
in Yahoo Health (September 24, 2015).

Dr. Hausenblas was interviewed and served as the subject matter expert for reporter
Amy Capetta's (Yahoo Health) story, So Sitting Too Long Won't Kill Us, After All? It
was published in Yahoo Health (October 15, 2015).

Dr. Hausenblas spoke to 6th grade class at Riverside Presbyterian Day School on
the importance of science and research in preparation for their science fair projects.
(October 29, 2015).

Dr. Hausenblas was interviewed by reporter Kathryn Only (Safe Bee) for her story,
Addicted to exercise? How to recognize exercise addiction and what to do about it,
which was published by Safe Bee. (November 3, 2015).

Dr. Rillstone facilitates a weekly Women’s Support Group for Hubbard House
(Domestic Violence Shelter) as a volunteer. (Sept. 2012-present).

Dr. Rillstone volunteers with Mika (her Australian Shepherd) for Pet Therapy at
Taylor Manor (local nursing home in Jacksonville). (October 2010-present).

Dr. Rillstone became a Big Sister through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and
was matched with a young middle school student. (February 2016 – present).

Dr. Wight and Dr. Robertson directed the first annual River House Run/Walk 5k to
kick-off an unforgettable homecoming weekend. The race was a great success with
over 300 participants and six runners finished under 17 minutes. Over 50 JU
Kinesiology students volunteered for this event! (October 10, 2015).

Dr. Wight and 20+ Kinesiology students volunteered for Jacksonville races including:
o Run for the Arts 5K (9/26/15) - to benefit the Riverside Fine Arts Association
o Runtoberfest 5K (10/17/15) - the "Fastest 5K in the Southeast"

Dr. Roberta Christopher represented JU as faculty at the Light the Night to end
lymphoma and leukemia 5K walk on November 5, 2015 at the Jacksonville Landing
in Jacksonville, FL. (November 2015).
Funded Grant Programs, Projects and Contracts

Alcon, Inc.: An Industry Contract to study how people view themselves and others
when it comes to aging.
Primary Investigator: Heather Hausenblas, PhD.
The purpose of this study is to conduct a study to understand how people view
themselves and others when it comes to aging. In partnership with Alcon, the

makers of Multifocal contacts, the study would target the Gen X population (ages 38
– 54) to better understand this age group’s perceptions on aging

Baptist Health: Baptist Health 2015-16 Residency Program
Primary Investigator: Kathleen Kavanagh, DMH, MSN, ED, RN.
The purpose of this agreement is initiate a training plan for Baptist Health (BH)
employees, develop a core curriculum and modular educational choices to improve
healthcare workforce competencies within the GN/RN Nurse Residency Program.
This will ultimately improve health outcomes in patient populations.

Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program: Athletic Trainer Assistantship Program
Primary Investigator: Christopher Robertson, PhD
The purpose of this agreement is to establish a comprehensive athletic training
program that will enable certified athletic trainers to pursue a Master of Science in
Kinesiological Sciences (MSKS) from JU while simultaneously completing an athletic
training Assistantship within Duval County Public Schools. The MSKS program is
proposed to begin fall 2016.

Private Family Foundation: Development of Online Patient and Caregiver interactive
guides for Airway Protection in Parkinson’s Disease
Primary Investigator: Christine Sapienza, PhD, CCC-SLP
The purpose of this grant is to develop online patient and caregiver interactive
guides for airway protection in Parkinson's disease.

Health Tech Consultants: Community Transformation through Permanent Housing
Project
Primary Investigator: Christine Sapienza, PhD, CCC-SLP
The purpose of this agreement is to conduct an evaluation that contributes to the
literature and evidence-base regarding permanent supportive housing’s (PSA) costeffectiveness and impact on ending homelessness and reducing individual’s use of
emergency public services.

Dr. Adele Hanlon, Dr. Colleen Wilson, Dr. Tammy Ryan, Rachel Green, and Dr.
Donnie Horner submitted a book chapter to be published. The target book release
date is set for May 2017 in P. Blessinger & B. Cozza (Eds.), University Partnerships
in Higher Education.

Dr. John Enz has written articles that were published this year in The Jacksonville
Times, The Tribune & Georgian, and The JU Navigator; regarding the dragonfly
research being conducted by his classes in the Timucuan Preserve.

Dr. John Enz also authored four newspaper articles published in The Jacksonville
Times, The Savannah Morning News, The Wave, and The JU Navigator, regarding
the research work on the gopher tortoises in Cumberland Island. This work was
featured on the CBS nationally syndicated TV series, “Rock the Park”.

Prof. Chris Dew authored lyrics for Flowing Through, a musical piece that was
composed by Dr. Tommy Harrison and performed by Michelle Brock at Terry
Concert Hall on February 21, 2016.

Prof. Chris Dew wrote, arranged and pre-produced work for Country Life, an album

Prof. Tony Steve was featured as guest artist at the Root Signal Electronic-Acoustic

Dr. Scott Watkins presented a solo recital at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, New
York, on October 10, 2015.

Prof. Deborah Jordan worked collaboratively with the team Creatively Independent
for a 2-wk intensive theatre-devising workshop. The students worked on ensemblebuilding, body awareness, mindfulness, physical theatre, and collaboration, which
culminated into a devised piece of theatre.

Prof. Michael Lomeka’s choreographic work Rites of Passage: A Memoir was
selected among 28 colleges and 60 pieces in the Southeast region to participate in
the Conference gala. Jacksonville University dancers conveyed themes of personal
reflection through water imagery.

Assistant Professor of Dance, Lana Heylock, departs with College of Fine Arts
dance, music, and vocal students to China this May. Heylock will oversee a diverse
and entertaining program in Shanghai and Hangzhou. The tour will include
performance opportunities in both cities as well as exciting cultural excursions.

Brian Palmer performs lead roles with the Jacksonville Symphony in The Nutcracker
and Cinderella.

Prof. Jim Benedict presented a paper on student-centered learning in the
foundations classroom at the 2015 FATE Conference in Indianapolis, IN.

Prof. of Dance, Cari Coble, has begun a Dance For Life Program teaching dance
classes at JU for people diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. She worked with the
UF Arts and Medicine program and UF Shands of Jacksonville to create a program
modeled after the internationally acclaimed Dance For PD program that is run by
the Mark Morris Dance Company in NY. Prof. Coble has been granted a sabbatical
and will be traveling to NY to attain certification in this program and certify our JU
campus to offer a full Dance For PD program at JU that will allow several research
opportunities and make JU the first program of this kind in the Jacksonville area.

Prof. Deborah Jordan presented workshops at three Theatre Conferences in the
northeast:
