April 24, 2016 - ST. THOMAS, MILLBROOK The ‘mostly’ monthly Newsletter of St. Thomas Anglican Church, 16 Centre Street, Millbrook, Ontario Tel: 705-932-2233 Church Website: http://stthomasanglicanchurchmillbrook.ca SPRING AND RENEWAL In last month’s editorial I suggested that during the Lenten Season we could turn to thinking about our own personal engagement as Christians. Continuing on this theme, I am mindful of how this time of the spring season gives us a time to renew and move forward in a number of ways: in our homes, our communities and our organizations. This appears also to be true for the Diocese of Toronto. There are of course some opportunities provided with the shift of responsibilities of Bishop Linda Nicolls after her election as coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Huron (and by the way she is also the first woman bishop in Huron). Archbishop Colin Johnson has invited clergy to join him for a time of conversation on the future of the Diocese. He is seeking feedback on the possibility of reconfiguring the episcopal areas and reducing the number of suffragan* bishops, as well as any other topics of concern that clergy would like to raise. Five town hall meetings have been scheduled and I am assuming that our Rev. Ruth will be attending the one on May 9 at St. Luke’s, Peterborough. This might be a good opportunity for us to have a discussion on these themes and provide our ‘two cents worth’ for Ruth+ to reflect upon as she provides some input into discussions on future aspects for the Diocese. *did you know that the term ‘suffragan’ dates from 1534 with a Suffragan Bishops Act of the Parliament of England? It authorized the appointment of suffragan (i.e. assistant) bishops in England and Wales. And from the date of that act comes the tradition that suffragans are named after a location in the diocese not the town the diocesan bishop comes from. So we maintain that tradition currently in the Diocese of Toronto, as Archbishop Colin Johnson is assisted by four suffragan bishops, styled "area bishops", each with oversight of a geographical region of the diocese: Trent-Durham, York-Credit Valley, York-Scarborough, and YorkSimcoe. (Maybe this tradition will be up for ‘renewal’.) Ruth+ passed the request to your editor and we have started a conversation to share our information and events. The project will hopefully result in an interactive calendar for the community. It includes an option to “post our events” - such as spaghetti suppers, fashions show, yard sales etc. So we would be able to post our community-based events, and send the information to the library—to review the event and add it to the calendar. I will keep you informed as this evolves. Ed. . There is lots going on Just a wee reminder that May 8th is Mother’s Day!
