Cashpoint® card
or Visa debit card?
Our Under 19s Account offers a Visa debit card to anyone
aged 11 or over, or a Cashpoint® card if you decide that is
right for you.
Our Cashpoint® card.
If you only need a card to access
money at cash machines, our
Cashpoint® card gives you access
to a large and accessible ATM
network in the UK and abroad.
With your Cashpoint® card you can
withdraw up to £200 from a Bank
of Scotland Cashpoint® machine
free of charge and from LINK cash
machines (a charge may apply).
Things to be aware of.
With our Under 19s Account
Visa debit card it’s easy to
make your everyday purchases,
whether it’s cinema tickets,
lunch or stationery supplies.
However, some transactions,
like gambling, may be
inappropriate for your age
group, so your card comes with
added functionality and will
block your purchases in some
shops or on some websites
that it recognises as being
potentially unsuitable.
This means that occasionally it
may not work for some of your
other purchases because it
thinks they are unsuitable too.
If you want to change your
card to one that doesn’t have
this added protection you can
ask for a replacement card in
branch when you turn 16.
6

Or you can use our
Visa debit card...
Your Visa debit card is designed
so that if you want to buy
something and there is enough
money in your account, everything
will go through automatically.
AA I n shops, over the phone and
online (your Visa debit card
won’t work in some retailers or
on websites that aren’t suitable
for your age group, such as
gambling sites).
If there isn’t, you shouldn’t be able
to buy the item to make sure you
can’t spend money you don’t have.
AA To take out up to £500 a day
from any of our wide network
of Bank of Scotland Cashpoint®
machines free of charge or from
LINK cash machines (a charge
may apply). You can also take
out up to £300 a day from Post
Office® branches.
Ways you can use our cards
In the extremely unlikely event that
something goes wrong and you
spend more money than you have
available in your account and go
overdrawn by mistake, you won’t
be charged any fees or charges
and we’ll work with you to make
sure your account is put right.

Ô
Remembering your PIN.
With your card comes a PIN
(Personal Identification Number).
When you pay for something in
a shop or take out money from a
Cashpoint®, you will need to type
in your PIN. If you’re finding it hard
to remember the one we’ve given
you, then you can change it to one
that’s easier to remember.
To change your PIN visit any Bank
of Scotland Cashpoint® and insert
your card and current PIN. Then
select ‘PIN services’ and follow the
on-screen instructions. If you've
got the Mobile Banking app, you
can use it to request a new PIN.
Chip and PIN.
Chip and PIN is when you enter
your PIN into a keypad when you
use your card to buy something.
Using it is simple: Insert your Visa
debit card into a card reader or
PIN pad and check the amount.
Top Tip. Your PIN is secret —
we recommend you don’t
write it down. You must
never give your PIN to
anyone else including bank
staff and the police.
You’ll still need to sign for
some of your purchases, instead
of using chip and PIN. For
example when you’re travelling
abroad or where a retailer hasn’t
yet upgraded to chip and PIN.
If your card is lost or stolen.
Your Visa debit card or Cashpoint®
card is much safer to carry around
than cash.
But you must report any theft
or loss of your card as soon as
possible so that we can prevent
other people from using it.
Call into any Bank of Scotland
branch, or call the Bank of
Scotland 24 hour Lost & Stolen
Cards service on 0800 028 8335,
in the UK, or (+44) 131 454 1605
from abroad.
We will usually send you
another card within three to five
working days.
Enter your PIN carefully and the
machine will check it is correct,
and print you a receipt.

Going abroad.
If you have a Cashpoint card you
can use it to take out cash from
ATMs abroad.
®
If you have a Visa debit card,
you can use it to pay for things
anywhere where you see the Visa
sign, including shops, restaurants
and cafés.
It’s more convenient and safer
than carrying lots of cash around,
plus you can withdraw local
currency from any cash machine
that displays the Visa sign.
If you've got the Mobile Banking
app, you can use it to tell us you're
going abroad, so we know your
transactions are from you. You can
also use the app to keep track of
your spending.
Charges apply when using your
Cashpoint® card or your Visa
debit card abroad, please see our
Banking Charges guide for details.
Staying in control.
Use Bank of Scotland Cashpoint®
machines 24 hours a day to check your
balance or print a mini statement, to
keep track of what you're spending.

Visa debit card
Cashpoint®/ATM
A plastic card that can be used
instead of cash when making a
purchase. The amount spent is
taken (debited) automatically by
computer from your account. The
Under 19s Bank of Scotland Visa
debit card does not come with an
overdraft facility.
An Automated Teller Machine
(ATM) is a cash dispensing
machine (or ‘hole in the wall’),
which you find in many places
including banks, shopping centres
and railway stations. In order to
be able to use an ATM you need a
Cashpoint® card or debit card and
a Personal Identification Number
(PIN). There is often a limit per day
on your withdrawals.
Cashpoint® card
A cash card allows you to draw
money from cash machines
(ATMs). Many banks set a daily
limit as to how much you can
take out, even if your account
contains funds.
Credit
If your account is in credit, it
means that you have money
available to spend.
Interest
LINK cash machines
A proportion (or percentage)
of money on top of an original
amount. If you save money, you
can often receive interest from the
bank on the money you save.
LINK is a UK network of cash
machines. You can use your Visa
debit or Cashpoint® card to take
out money from cash machines
where you see the LINK sign.

Debit
Going overdrawn
Money which is taken out of
an account is ‘debited from’
that account.
When you spend more money
than is available in your
account this is called going
overdrawn, sometimes referred
to as an unplanned overdraft or
unauthorised borrowing.
Direct debit
This is an arrangement where the
bank releases money from your
account to pay bills automatically.
The organisation you are paying
can change the amount of a Direct
Debit, but you are told in advance
how much it will be. If you set up a
Direct Debit to pay household bills
you usually receive a discount, and
it means that you don’t have to
worry about sending off a cheque
each month.
Balance
Is the amount of money you have
in your bank or other account at
