The course covers the key knowledge, skills and competencies which are
important for new academics to ensure intelligent career adjustment when
they enter the world of academia. The first part of the course shall cover the
concepts of career, career adjustment, work adjustment, the Minnesota
Theory of Work Adjustment, the Person-Environment Fit Perspective and
career stages. The second part of the course shall cover new academics
attitude during the process of career adjustment. It also includes the key
factors in intelligent career adjustment of new academics, such as ‘why we
work’, ‘how we work’, ‘whom we work with’ and ‘knowing what’.

By definition communication has been the most trivial activity of conveying
information for academics. Since the activity requires a sender, a message, and
an intended recipient knowing the right techniques and skills are prime concern
of this course. The course will give an overview of what communication mean
especially that affecting communication between lecturer and students. The
course will seek to explain the difference between exploring and delivering of
knowledge. The course will expose on the right ways to bridge the lecturerstudent gap; to address and to encourage students to voice views using the
right words to the right person. Participants will also gain knowledge on
questioning techniques especially about eliciting more information using hints
and laddering techniques. Participants will also learn the art of identify strength
and weakness of students and other interpersonal communication skills. Other
topics include communication noise or barriers, cultural and psychological noise
in and around lecturer-student context.

Presentation skills are an essential asset in the fields of academia. No one
is born to be good public speakers but many could become one upon
training and practice. This course will give participants an overview of
presentation mechanics on: knowing how to conquer the skills of delivery
techniques that get results; understanding audience needs and rectification;
and organizing clear and concise information during preparation stage up
to the moment of delivery. Participants will learn skills from dynamic
introductions to powerful closings. Participants will be exposed to some
aspects of vocal and body language, besides developing strategies for
handling bullies or other disruptive participants. They will also be given
some tips on benefits and pitfalls of visual representation and audience
seating arrangements.
