MOTORSPORT FOR CARS OF ALL AGES
A Very Warm Welcome to Oulton Park
I find it very hard to believe that this
is our penultimate meeting of the
year, with only our season finale
(featuring night races) at Brands
Hatch next month to go after this.
And what a season it’s been!
We began this year with CSCC
record breaking entries at our first
two meetings (Snetterton and Brands
Hatch) and thought that would be
hard to beat, that was until our last
meeting at Donington on the 5th and
6th of September. That meeting at
Donington broke all previous CSCC
entries, with a total of 375 entries
and that doesn’t include second
drivers!
The following week (12th September)
we ran one race on the Grand Prix
circuit at Silverstone for the CSCC
New Millennium and CSCC Modern
Classics Series together with our
friends at the Dunlop Puma Cup. This
resulted in 59 cars out for qualifying
and 57 cars taking the start, quite a
grid!
Now we always quite rightly thank
our officials, marshals and helpers,

Steve Askham X300.
Class B is more settled as Guy Connew’s XJ6 Coupe leads Rodney
Frost (XJS) by a massive 50 points, with Dave Bye’s XJ6 Coupe just
6 points behind. Class C sees the XJSs of James Ramm leading Sam
Clarke Jr by 5 points with Colin Philpott 3rd.

The fully modified class is headed by David Howard XJ12 from
Lawrence Coppock with Sam Clarke Snr 3rd. Overall, Ramm leads
from Clarke Jr & Connew but this could all change today, promising
a very exciting race. This has been a very exciting season with the

MOTORSPORT FOR CARS OF ALL AGES
Race 2 (60 Minutes with pit stop)
CSCC Classic K
No. Driver
The last CSCC Classic K meeting of the season sees a modest but pleasantly mixed grid of cars to enjoy through the autumnal trees surrounding
Oulton Park. Many series regulars will have been lured to last weekends Spa 6 hour meeting, so will now be resting and recovering at home.
Todays winner could come from the lone E-Type of Robert Farrell (11), Cobra shared by Mark and Ted Williams (47), the Marcos of Richard
Skinner (17) or one of the quick Elans who traditionally go very well here at Oulton; perhaps the father and son team of John and Tom Bradshaw
(60). Welcome to Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams who shares the no. 83 Lotus Elite with Gideon Hudson today.
The last round at Donington Park on
September 6th was a 60 minute thriller
right up to the last lap, captured in words
by CSCC Classic K Driver Representative,
Mark Barton.
Here we are only a week before the
biggest UK FIA meeting in the calendar
(Goodwood) with almost 30 cars on the
grid, superb.
Once again the weather was in our favour
with the autumnal drizzle clearing up by the
time we got practice under way, although
there was a period early on in practice
where the track was dry in one area and wet
in another. Reminders of Spa? Once we got
practice going we had an unfortunate early
retirement of the Mark and Ted Williams AC
Cobra, which we had expected to be a
winning formula. Another loss was the Ford
Mustang of Andy Yool and David Garrett.
However, both cars would be able to make
the grid after they did three laps behind the
pace car at lunch break and started from
the back of the grid. One big Ford V8 that
did make qualifying was the Galaxie of
Derek Drinkwater and Wayne Langridge,
which even managed to pass the noise test,
although as the engine was new, so being
kept under 4500 RPM, that was the only
thing it did pass all weekend. Derek plans to
bring out a Cadillac next year; even bigger!
6
www.classicsportscarclub.co.uk
Mark Halstead and Stuart McPherson put
their yellow Elan on pole position with a
time of 1.21.5 although for the race a win
would be hard to find as they had a 30
second winners penalty. David Tomlin, who
brought his red Elan home fourth fastest on
the tables would have a similar penalty.
Mike Gardner and Niki Faulkner managed
to get second fastest in their Ford Falcon
before an oil cooler split, with a 1.22.74
best lap, a mere eleven hundredths of
a second ahead on Nick Randall and
Fabio Randaccio in another Elan. As a
demonstration of just how competitive an
agile, small capacity car can be, Lotus Elans
blocked out five of the top six grid spots,
despite Donington being regarded as a
power circuit.
All 28 runners made the grid although
the Falcon of Mike and Niki Faulkner
had to start from the end of the pit lane
as they missed the assembly area due to
over running on time on the fitting of a
replacement oil cooler.
In the initial laps the 4.7 litre AC Cobra
carved its way through the pack, soon
catching the front runners, only to be
waylaid by a mechanical fault leading to
retirement. The Falcon of Mike Gardner
and Niki Faulkner did a similar catchup,
eventually reaching second overall and first
in class C, but blowing the oil cooler pipe
on the last lap. Rather annoyingly they kept
running, putting oil around the whole track,
leading to a reprimand from the Clerk of
the Course and a lengthy clear up for the
hardworking Marshals. As the Falcon was
four laps ahead of the next class C car they
would have still kept their class victory if
they had stopped when the pipe burst.
CLASSIC SPORTS CAR CLUB
Dan Cox and Ollie Stirling were almost half
a lap ahead at the finish in their Elan in front
of Mark Halstead and Stuart McPherson,
who were unable to make up the 30
second penalty to take the win, despite their
best lap time being over 1 second faster
than the next fastest. The final result sheet
does not give a true picture however, with
Stuart McPherson setting fast lap after fast
lap, eroding the Cox/Stirling lead down
to less than half a second as both cars
crossed the line to start the final lap! With a
very excited commentator reporting on the
contest, McPherson made his move coming
up the hill from the Old Hairpin. Both cars
were side by side when McPhersons Elan
coughed and spluttered, running on petrol
fumes, with just enough fuel to limp to the
line....what might have been! The retiring
Cobra was only about a half a second
down on the best lap time of the day which
could give us an intriguing battle today if the
AC stays reliable. Third home was the Elan
of David Tomlin and Nick Adcock.
Fourth and fifth went to the Marcos 1800’s
of Alan Tice/Chris Conoley in the red car
and Richard Skinner in the silver car. Steve
Chapman was first non-ford home in the
SLR in 10th, ten seconds ahead of a dice
between the sole MGB of Will Linley after
Paul Wybrow (also in an MGB) retired after
2 laps just point six of a second ahead of
the TVR of David Thompson and Jon Wolfe.
Will was winner of class M and David/Jon
winners of class E.

Race 3 (40 Minutes with pit stop)
CSCC Tin Tops with MS Society & Dunlop Puma Cup
Today’s race sees a capacity grid of 38 cars plus reserves! We believe
this may be the largest number of Tin Top type cars to race here; prior to
this season the grid capacity was 4 cars less at 34?
Donington Park on the 6th of September saw a huge grid of 36 Tin Tops
take to the National circuit. Victory went to Richard Woods, the first in
this new car, his reward after a huge team effort over many months. 22
seconds back was Danny Cassar in the smart looking blue and white
Honda Integra DC5, chased by the class E 1600cc Citroen Saxo of Lee
Williams, just 3 seconds later. In fourth place was Tom Mensley in his
Clio 172, finishing 30.8 seconds behind the leader after serving a 30
second winners penalty.
Mention should go to Toms brother Paul Mensley, who was making
large gains of time on everyone in the latter stages, coming back from serving a 60 second winners penalty, before ending the race
prematurely in the gravel, sliding off on dropped oil. Pauls consolation being the fastest lap of the race.
Vanquish Motorsport is running a Fiat Punto
Abarth (no.41) driven by Giles Billingsley in
class D of the CSCC Tin Tops series.
The car was built by Fiat in 2004 to
compete in the Dunlop Abarth Cup in
Ireland, which it did with great success.
This series spawned numerous top class
drivers. Our car was built for Barry Rabbit,
championship winner in 2004, and with
a build cost in excess of £30,000 the
specification is quite high!
The 1800cc twin cam engine will be very
familiar to any Alfa Romeo aficionado, and
is blueprinted and balanced. Sporting a
different induction system, forged pistons
and rods, a re-mapped ECU, lightened
flywheel and racing paddle clutch, the engine
produces significantly more power than when
standard. The car has a fully welded cage,
LEDA suspension, updated brakes and OZ
racing wheels, but the silhouette of the car
remains the same as a standard Punto.
This Dunlop Abarth Cup Car is being driven
by Giles Billingsley. Giles’ motor racing
career started in the 1970’s in 100cc
karts; competing predominantly at Tilbury
or Rye House, he enjoyed a modicum of
success. After a brief spell in 250cc karts,
he progressed into FF1600 single seaters.
Marriage and a family sadly put paid to his
motor racing, but he was re-introduced to it
when his own son started competing in the
Alfa Cup, which he still does, also under the
Vanquish Motorsport umbrella.
tangling with another car at the hairpin!
2014 saw Giles return to competitive
Motorsport with a different series, where six
podiums from seven starts was a pleasing first
season!
The team is looking forward to racing at
Oulton Park, one of Giles’ favourite circuits,
and one that tests both drivers and cars with
its undulating track and high speed bends.
They are hoping for a good result! Do come
down to the paddock for a chat with either
Giles or Neil, the chief mechanic, they love
talking about their cars. If you are interested
in any training with Vanquish Motorsport,
or wish to hire the Punto Abarth for a race
series in 2016 (they have two cars) either
speak with the team here at Oulton, or visit
www.vanquishmotorsport.co.uk for more
information.
Vanquish Motorsport runs both these cars,
but also still does training in karts, running
a Tonykart with a Rotax 125 engine. They
believe that karting gives you a truly great
introduction to Motorsport, and regular
outings in a kart hones a drivers abilities and
sharpens the reactions!
Vanquish Motorsport has succeeded in
securing sponsorship for Giles this season
from Hydraquip. Hydraquip is a national
hose and hydraulic company with a keen
interest in motorsport.
The CSCC Tin Tops
season has gone well for
Giles so far, with class
wins at Silverstone and
Rockingham, although
a DNF at Mallory Park
in August was very
disappointing after

Race 4 (40 Minutes with pit stop)
CSCC Gold Arts Magnificent Sevens – Group 1 & 2
Welcome to the Gold Arts Magnificent Sevens race which
today sees both Group 1 and 2 joining together on track.
At Donington the series ran separately allowing the slower
Group 1 cars to battle it out amongst themselves. Only 0.58
of a second at the end of a 40 minute race separated 1st and
2nd place, with Matt Spark just beating the car of John and
Alexander Saunders to the line. Can Matt make it 4 race wins
in a row?
The more powerful and faster Group 2 cars were lead by
Danny Winstanley who has also won the races at his last 3
outings. He (as well as Matt) will be starting from the pitlane, as
a penalty for his last win, so watch them both working their way
up through the field. Can Matt and Danny make it 4 race wins
in a row?!

CLASSIC SPORTS CAR CLUB
MOTORSPORT FOR CARS OF ALL AGES
Come and race with the Classic Sports Car Club
The Classic Sports Car Club organises friendly club racing with an emphasis on great value for money and high driving standards.
We drive at the best circuits in the UK and abroad.
Where do I start?
We will go into more detail later in this guide,
but in brief you need: A race car, prepared with
safety equipment such as roll cage, harness,
extinguisher etc. Personal safety equipment,
including, helmet, race suit, gloves and boots
(plus we advise a Frontal Head Restraint device
such as a HANS device) An MSA Race National
B license Club membership and series (car)
registration
Why race a car, rather than sprint,
hillclimb or trackday?
All of the disciplines listed above involve driving
your car quickly, whether for fun (in the case of
a trackday), against the clock in speed events
(hillclimbs and sprints) or a race to the flag with
other competitors on the track at the same time
(racing). Racing side by side, wheel to wheel
is one of the most exhilarating things you can
do in life and relies on skill, tactics and trust in
your fellow competitors. A motor racing circuit is
usually a wide ribbon of tarmac where you may
need to use a variety of ‘lines’, not necessarily
the fastest racing line as a car you are trying to
overtake is occupying the space you desire; this
is where overtaking tactics come into play. It is
this close competition with other drivers and cars
that makes racing such an amazing experience.
Whether you are a racing novice or you have
experience with another racing club, you
shouldn’t need convincing that racing cars on
a track with other enthusiasts is one of the most
exciting pastimes you might ever do.
What makes the Classic Sports Car
Club different from other racing
clubs?
We are a club first and a business second. Our
committee is made up of experienced racers and
officials and ensures that we provide our club
members with the best possible racing experience
at sensible costs. We only run series, rather
than championships, where each round is an
individual event with no points, making the racing
slightly less serious (but no less competitive) and
no pressure to have to compete in every round.
The CSCC actively enforces strictly enforced
driving standards: no-one wants to spend money
on panel repairs. The club is beginner friendly,
with a new driver ‘buddy’ system to help you
through your first race meeting and over a
hundred novice drivers who started their racing
hobby with us. With the exception of the Special
Saloons and Modsports Series we have longer
40 minute or one hour races with a mandatory
pit stop and 30 minute qualifying/practice
sessions on the same day. Entries may be either
single drivers, two drivers sharing a single car
or a two car team (all at the same race entry
fee). An overall winners penalty helps reduce
the likelihood of the same car dominating at
every round. Freedom of choice when it comes
12
www.classicsportscarclub.co.uk
to tyres (from the MSA list 1A or 1B)
and some other modifications. We
allow a “Taster” round where the
registration fee will be waived for the
first round.
How much will it cost?
Well, Motor Racing is never cheap,
but the club makes the track time
you receive great value. The initial
equipment costs can be quite high
(car, preparation and personal
safety equipment), but once bought
the ongoing costs can be very
reasonable. We have members who
race on a shoestring and may only
compete in one or two rounds a year, sleeping
in their car/tent/van/aunties house with no
testing time, whilst other members stay in hotels
and have a race team to look after them. We
embrace every type of racer, as long as they
are here to have fun. If you have been taking
part in sprinting and hill climbing then the costs
to race are not too dissimilar once you have
actually bought the mandatory safety equipment
for yourself and your car and in fact may
work out cheaper per minute of tracktime. The
cheapest way of racing with us is to share a car
with a friend and so halving the costs. Choose
the CSCC race meetings which take place
nearest to you, drive your road legal car to the
circuit, qualify and race and drive home again
afterwards on the same day (or stay overnight if
you prefer)! Doing this may cost each driver as
little as £250 per event even taking into account
the race entry fee, petrol, a certain amount of
normal wear and a bacon roll or two. Your costs
with us amount to club membership, series/car
registration and then a race entry fee.
Choice of car and car safety
Your choice of car is a very personal one and is
likely to come down to budget, what you may
already own or what you are interested In. Most
choose to buy their car outright or share the car
with a friend (halving the costs), but you can also
rent a racing car on a race by race basis from
a number of teams and preparers that race with
the CSCC. Take a look at our different series and
their simple regulations to see where a particular
car may fit in. An existing race car is usually the
cheapest way of starting out, with a selection of
cars starting from just £2000. Contact the CSCC
club office who may be able to advise you of
a cars suitability and eligibility and join the club
to receive the club newsletters that often contain
cars for sale. Before thinking of how to make a
car go faster you must first make sure it is safe for
competition. The MSA Blue Book (which you will
receive as part of your racing licence application)
is your bible when it comes to the mandatory
safety requirements of a racing car. In brief, to
turn a road car into a racing car you will need
to fit a fire extinguisher, racing seat, harness, roll

cage, electrical cut off, rain light, relevant stickers
(including a novice cross) and a transponder so
that each racing lap you complete is counted
and timed. After this it is generally accepted that
improvements to the brakes, suspension, cooling,
tyres and most importantly the drivers skills (!)
should come before increasing power.
Driver safety
In addition to the cars safety equipment you must
also invest in suitable fire proof clothing, again the
MSA Blue Book is your guide here. The CSCC
has a discount directory which is sent to members,
helping them to save money on equipment. As
a minimum you require a suitable MSA helmet,
FIA fireproof overalls, gloves and boots. It is
recommended that you also consider fireproof
underwear, a Frontal Head Restraint (FHR) such as
a HANS or Simpsons Hybrid and wrist restraints in
open cars. Once bought, many of these items will
last many years if well looked after.
Racing licence
To compete in a race you must hold a valid
racing licence. To get one of these is both fun
and straightforward. Visit the MSA website,
purchase a ‘Go Racing’ pack for £95, take a
medical, book an ‘ARDS’ course with a race
circuit where you take (and hopefully pass) a
practical and theory test and send off for your
license (first years licence fee included). Your
first racing licence will be a Race National B
which is fine for all of the CSCC UK rounds. To
be able to race with us in Belgium at our Spa
Summer Classic event requires a Race National
A licence; to get this requires you to gain six
race signatures, by successfully racing in different
events. A days marshalling also gains you a
signature, is well recommended and saves you
money. Alternatively, if you would like to get
involved in the action but don’t fancy racing
why not volunteer to marshal with us? It’s the
closest you can get to the action without sitting
in the drivers seat. Take a look at our Officials/
Marshals page.
Please contact the Classic Sports Car Club for
any advice or help about how to get started
with us.

CSCC Advantage Motorsport Future Classics
Donington Park 5th September
With a 2 second advantage after qualifying
Chris Compton Goddard and Dave Coyne
looked set to take an easy win in their Ferrari
308 GTB (class C) three weeks ago at
Donington. Leaving Mark Chiltn’s Porsche
928 (A) and Nic Olson’s Lotus Esprit (C)
to fight it out for second and third place,
themselves being a second clear of Tim
Bates’ Porsche 911. All from class A and C.
Class B pole was taken by Stephen ScottDunwoodie in his Ford Sierra Cosworth
(7th Overall) and Tony Maryon had his
Porsche 944 ahead in the Class G (Porsche
Transaxle). Club Chairman John Hammersley
and co-driver Simon Taylor were in a clear
lead in Class D with their Vauxhall Astra GTE.
A rolling start got the race underway and
Nic Olson took an advantage over Mark
Chilton, taking second
place as Dave Coyne
built an early lead. Nic
and Mark pitted in lap
10 which put them down
the order and Dave came
in on lap 15, however
all was not plain sailing
as the Ferrari did not
swap drivers and was
in again on lap 17.
Swapping drivers this
time not only put them down to 11th but
with an alternator charging issue things
were getting worse and they had to retire
on lap 21.
This promoted Nic to first place and the
race was on. It was the Morgan +8 of
Matthew Wurr (class C) that was taking
up the challenge closely
followed by Mark Chilton.
Although they both had
great speed getting by 24
back markers was never
going to be an easy job.
For 8 laps Matthew closed
in on Nic at the same time
Mark closed in on Matthew
... only to come upon a
gaggle of back markers
having their own race.
And so when the chequered flag fell Nic was
clear at the front for the win with Mathew
and Mark falling in for 2nd and 3rd.
Class B was won by the Ford Sierra
Cosworth of Brian Lilley and Aaron Tucker. A
broken driveshaft put John and Simons Astra
out with only 4 laps to go, gifting a well
earned win to David Bryant in his Toyota
MR2 in class D. Tony Maryon took the Class
G win by almost a minute even after a 30
second success penalty for an earlier race
win.
So now at Oulton Park, the home of series
sponsor Advantage Motorsport we see these
drivers line up again so keep an eye on
these cars to see who can come out on top
this time.

Race 6 (40 Minutes with pit stop)
CSCC Swinging Sixties Group 1 & 2
I am not sure my driving advice is much
use here, as the last time I raced at Oulton
Park I was second from last! The only car
I beat was penalised for speeding in the
pit lane!
Mr Palmer himself arrived in his helicopter
during my last visit, climbed out and went
straight into the restaurant kitchen on an
inspection. We are fortunate that JP has
invested so much in his circuits. All this
60’s business is great, but facilities for
drivers and spectators weren’t quite so
good when these cars were current.
Here at Oulton Park, we have lots of fast
curves, some ups and downs, changes in

Swinging 60s Race Report
Donington Park 5th September 2015
Group 1
After rain showers overnight, everyone was
pleased to see a dry, if overcast, morning.
The practice session for the Group 1 cars
saw some cars out for the first time this
season - Chris Dear in his red, white and
blue MG Midget, David Moorhouse with
tarmac and even a banked corner. The
only advice I am confident in giving (and
Classic K series drivers are not allowed to
read this) is when you come out of Druids,
if you are looking out of the windscreen,
look for the ‘P’ in Palmer Sport on the
Warwick bridge. This will set you up for
the ‘bent straight’ leading up to Lodge
corner.
I wish you all a safe, reliable, fast and
enjoyable race, whether you are driving
or watching.
Chris Blewett,
Driver Representative Swinging Sixties
MOTORSPORT FOR CARS OF ALL AGES
CSCC Swinging Sixties Group 1 & 2
Due to a tremendous number of entries,
the Swinging Sixties race was split into 2
races: Group 1 (for the smaller -engined
cars) and Group 2 (for the larger cars).
I can still be enthusiastic about the
sweeping curves and the parkland; a
setting that seems to fit in well with the
60’s cars which you are going to drive
or watch. This place was looking great
for the Gold Cup last month, with all the
kerbs nicely painted, the circuit boundary
white lines looking crisp, and the grass
beautifully cut, but not at all inviting (the
grass that is).
This circuit is my favourite to drive and
the most atmospheric to walk around. In
fact for those of you who have tempted
a partner to attend, this is the place to
discuss that new engine you need for next
season!
CLASSIC SPORTS CAR CLUB
his Mini and Max Tyler in his recently
re-sprayed red Midget - his trailer is now
becoming colour-coordinated with the race
car - leftover paint?
A few cars had problems in practice,
including Chris Dear who had an oil leak,
Peter Reeve who suddenly found he had no
brakes and the Howells’ Mini which broke
a drive-shaft. All the problems were fixed
for the race.
The race was in the late afternoon, which
meant driving down both the pit-and back
straights into the low sun. The grid had a
front row of two Minis: Clive Tonge/Vaughn
Winter and Chris Watkinson, followed
by 3 “Spridgets”. The first 7 cars were
separated by only 2 seconds; so it looked
as if it would be in for a close race. When
the lights went out at the rolling start, Clive
Tonge and Vaugan Winter swept into the
lead, leaving Chris Watkinson just about
in the clutches of Tim Cairns (who had a
1- minute penalty for 2 previous 2015 race
wins). For several laps, there was a good
dice between them until Chris pulled away
and began to chase the leader. Chris Dear
had a half-shaft break, but was able to limp
back to the paddock, replace it and return
for the last few laps of the race (surely the
first time that such a repair has been made
within a race!).
The safety car remained in the Pits for the full
duration, so the race was completed without
interruption. The drivers all felt that they had
had a good time, even the ones who did
not finish - disappointment was the order of
the day for Becky Fellows, who spun and
was unable to continue, and the Howells’
Mini which suffered a terminal oil leak.
At the Chequered Flag, it was Chris
Watkinson in the Mini who triumphed by
just half a second from the Mini of Clive
Tonge and Vaughn Winter, after a most
entertaining race-long battle only settled
at the last corner; two minis through the
Roberts chicane ‘just’ works. Third place
was taken by the 2-car team of TR4s driven
by Chris Edwards and Russell Martin.
Group 2
The Group 2 practice session followed
the Group 1 session in the morning and,
again, some cars needed attention after
30 minutes - John Leslie had a front hub
fail, but, with help from Iain Daniels (who
made a quick trip back to his workshop),
it was all back in working order in time for
the race. Jon Ellison was not so fortunate,
however. He found the differential mounti
ng on his Triumph TR6 had broken. Sadly,
despite all Jon’s best efforts to remedy the
problem, he was only able to complete 2
laps of the race.
Pole position for the Group 2 race was
held by the Ginetta of Mark Halstead and
Stuart McPherson, who had a 1-minute
Penalty for 2 race wins, with the Plus 8
Morgan of Richard and William Plant
beside them on the front row. They were
followed by Luke Wos, out in the Chevrolet
Camaro for the first time this season, and
the Lotus Elan of Nicholas Randall and
Fabio Randaccio.
Unfortunately the race was stopped on the
first lap following an oil spillage. The oil
was dropped unknowingly by a car which
had fractured an oil pipe and the first driver
to find the oil was John Hutchison Jnr whose
smart blue Reliant Scimitar found itself in the
gravel trap. This spillage caused the race
to be paused for nearly 20 minutes while
the Marshals worked hard to make the track
safe. During this time the race clock kept
ticking with enough time left at the re-start
for 7 laps of racing AND the drivers had
to do their pit-stops. At the Chequered Flag
it was the Camaro of Luke Wos which
triumphed by just 8 seconds over Lotus
Super 7 of John Muirhead, with the Ginetta
of Mark Halstead and Stuart MacPherson
20 seconds behind the Lotus.
With the onset of Autumn and the
accompanying unpredictable weather, we
are keeping our fingers crossed for a fine
day at Oulton Park today.
