Project: Tie Knots, Bends and Hitches

Level 1 Carpentry| E2 AC2 | Access, Rigging and Hoisting Equipment | Tie knots, bends and hitches
Project: Tie Knots, Bends and Hitches
Achievement Criteria

Performance: The learner will select and tie knots, bends and/or hitches

Conditions: The learner will be given a rope

Criteria: The learner will be evaluated on safety and tying techniques
Project Overview
In this project, students demonstrate their ability to tie eight knots accurately. Students work
one-on-one with instructors. Instructors identify a knot and time students as they attempt to
demonstrate the knot. Students will need to demonstrate that they can tie the knot accurately
and within a reasonable time frame.
Preparing for this project, students will have practice in identifying and tying knots.

Project Procedure and Assessment
Step 1: Explain project to students including grading expectations.
Step 2: Pick a knot, and ask student to demonstrate it accurately.
Step 3: Student will tie the knot while the instructor observes and times students.
Step 4: Grade students according to rubric.
Note: If a student fails any knots, they will have one opportunity at a later point to have a retest
for the knots they scored zero on. Students are only allowed one retest, and the maximum

grade they can receive, even if they tie the knot correctly in less than 60 seconds, is 7 for that
knot.
Instructions for Students: You will be required to tie eight different knots. Your instructor will
tell you which knots to tie in a random order. Each time you tie a knot, your instructor will time
you. You will receive full marks if you can tie that knot correctly in less than 60 seconds. If you
tie the knot correctly but take between one and two minutes, you will receive partial marks. If
you do not demonstrate the knot correctly, or demonstrate it correctly but you take more than
two minutes, you will receive a zero for that knot.
If you fail any knots, you will have one opportunity at a later point to have a retest for the knots
you scored zero on. You are only allowed one retest, and the maximum grade you can receive,
even if you tie the knot correctly in less than 60 seconds, is 7 for that knot.
