2004-2005 EX_English1016.qxd 04.11.26 0:50 PM Page 32 GLOSSARY THX™ TECHNOLOGY AND QUALITY ASSURANCE Filmmaker George Lucas originally created THX™ as a studio-reference monitoring tool, and THX Ltd. is now recognized as the leading provider of product and venue certification for the cinema and home entertainment industries. THX™ Surround EX™ extends the 5.1-channel format by adding a back surround channel matrixed from the left and right surround channels. THX™ Ultra2 provides 7.1-channel playback of any 5.1 multichannel program; video switching for all wide-bandwidth sources (including HDTV and progressive scan DVD) without picture degradation; and THX™ Games Mode to faithfully reproduce video game sound content. Representing strict standards for audio and power output,THX™ Select (for an up to 2,000 ft3 room) and THX™ Ultra (for a 2,000+ ft3 room) guarantee superior performance and ensure accurate reproduction of the movie theater experience in the home. DOLBY® DIGITAL FORMATS Dolby® is recognized as the pioneer in mutichannel audio reproduction. Dolby® Digital EX™ creates six full-bandwidth channels from 5.1-channel sources using a matrix decoder that derives three surround channels from the two in the original recording. Dolby® Pro Logic® IIx transforms any native stereo or 5.1 signal into a 6.1- or 7.1- channel output with Movie, Music and Game modes that enable you to tailor your listening experience to the source material. Game mode can deliver fullimpact special effects signals to the surround speakers. equipment. Onkyo has developed its own solution that restores the correct tonal balance of a movie soundtrack in the smaller environs of your home theater. 192KHZ/24-BIT DACS Costly, extremely powerful D/A converters for all main channels in our top receivers. They not only boast a dynamic range of 120dB, they process information faster and are virtually resistant to clock jitter, to ensure the best possible performance from DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, Super Audio CD and audio CD. Audio/Video Products 2004-2005 POWERED ZONE 2 You don’t need an external amplifier to enjoy a stereo audio source (radio, CD, MD, LP or cassette) in the main room, while at the same time someone else listens to a different stereo source in another room. COLOR-CODED SPEAKER TERMINALS These color-coded speaker terminals take the guesswork out of matching wires to the correct terminals. Simply attach the color-coded label to the speaker cable, and attach the cable to the same-colored speaker terminal for easy speaker connection. DTS® (DIGITAL THEATER SYSTEMS) FORMATS DTS® offers premium sound quality with optimal channel separation and sound quality. Like Dolby® Digital, standard DTS® is a discrete 5.1-channel system; however, it uses less compression. DTS® Neo:6 derives 6-channel sound from a stereo (2-channel) soundtrack. DTS offers two DTS®-ES™ (Extended Surround) formats: DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1, which provides a 6.1channel system with a discrete back surround channel; and DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1, which provides a 6.1-channel system with a matrix-encoded back surround channel. DTS® 96/24 offers you the sound quality of the 96/24 master. This format can be encoded on DVD-Video or in the video zone of DVD-Audio, so it can be played on all DVD players. S-LINE EDGE Onkyo has incorporated an exclusive S-Line Edge in the OMF diaphragm. Essentially, this is a smoother edge where emitted sound literally “rolls off ” with less obstruction compared to other speakers. CinemaFILTER™ The tonal balance of a film soundtrack can be edgy and bright when played back over audio equipment in your home—this is because film soundtracks are designed to be played back in large theaters, using commercial CROSSOVER ADJUSTMENT Previously, crossover frequency was fixed at 80 Hz. With crossover adjustment, you can set the frequency at 40/60/80/100/120/150 Hz, depending on your receiver and speakers’ bass playback ability. This lets you more accurately match the performance characteristics of the subwoofer to your front speakers. ONKYO MICRO FIBER AND A-OMF The Onkyo Micro Fiber (OMF) speaker cone utilizes a pure cotton weave to absorb vibrations. Also, a thin yet rigid flexing diaphragm enables an extremely fast and accurate response. A new development, A-OMF, incorporates a PEN (polyethylene naphthalate) layer with a flexible cotton weave, making cones even stronger and more resistant to heat. Both cones achieve improved midrange clarity and imaging for an astonishingly vivid, natural sound. We think of sound more realistically—sound that spans the entire audio range, from the subtlest nuances to the most awe-inspiring thunderous booms. By bundling our proprietary technologies and innovations with other soundenhancing exclusives, we have created our own “sound harmony”—a sound that we’re confident you’ll feel is the best you’ve heard, felt and experienced. To fully appreciate how the acoustics of your room affect sound is no easy matter. Onkyo’s Auto Speaker Set-up with Microphone uses a highsensitivity microphone to pick up test tones from your favorite listening spot, and then uses an acoustic analyzer to adjust the sound pressure level and time delay of each channel. What does this mean for you, the listener? It means that each channel is delivered synchronously, so you get the most accurate frequency response from your favorite listening spot in whichever room you choose. Incorporating Our Own Proprietary Technology We’re not interested in second best, which is why we have developed exclusive technologies such as WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology), VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) and a massive High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer for our most expensive high-end receivers and for the audio requirements of digital formats and technologies. Today, you can find these features in every receiver in our line-up. 3 Significant Benefits You Get From WRAT Benefit 1: Uncommonly Low Negative-Feedback Design—Get cleaner sounds on program peaks NFB (negative feedback) is the most cost-effective way to reduce noise at lower frequencies, but it will severely inhibit an amplifier’s ability to respond to large signal gains (e.g. explosions and musical finales) and to produce sound at high frequencies. We use a low negative-feedback design with audiophile-grade, close-tolerance components at critical points in the signal path to achieve a frequency response out to 100 kHz for high-resolution formats such as DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD, as well as for regular CDs and DVDs. Benefit 2: Closed Ground-Loop Circuits—Enjoy greater maximum volume without distortion If an amplifier’s ground potential (voltage) fluctuates during playback, you can expect noise. In an open-loop circuit design, where all circuits are connected to the power supply via one loop (like on many amplifiers), the noise multiplies exponentially. Onkyo’s sophisticated closed-circuit design enables each circuit to go and return directly to the power supply, which cancels any individual circuit noise and keeps the ground potential free of distortion. Benefit 3: High Instantaneous-Current Capability—Experience film soundtracks with greater impact After an amplifier outputs audio signals, speakers accumulate energy, reflex and send energy back to the amplifier. The amplifier must immediately cancel the speakers’ reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current is also necessary to handle speaker impedance fluctuations, which can force an amplifier to provide four to six times its usual current load. The instantaneous current capability of even Onkyo’s least expensive WRAT receivers exceeds that of most conventional units because they commonly have less than half the current capability. An Onkyo receiver will deliver movie soundtracks with dynamics and clarity like you experience in the theater. 6 TX-NR901 Video Upconversion with TBC (Time Base Corrector) When connecting playback devices to compatible televisions and displays, conversion of both composite and S-Video signals to component video simplifies the connection process by enabling just one connection. During upconversion, each video signal incorporates a synchronization pulse (sync) that represents the beginning of each video signal. These syncs need to be highly precise in amplitude and timing to eliminate clock jitter, which can degrade the picture substantially, particularly on high resolution display devices. By incorporating a time-base corrector (TBC) in the conversion process, inconsistencies in the signal’s timing can be corrected, thereby ensuring the highest-quality picture possible. The lesser-used controls are neatly tucked away behind the drop-down panel. Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC) In conventional digital-to-analog methods, it is impossible to completely remove noise, which taints the analog signal and ultimately degrades the sound emitted from your speakers. With Onkyo’s VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry), data is continuously sampled between two discrete points (via a signal comparison generator), and the difference is joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The VLSC digital-to-analog conversion method results in a smooth, virtually pulse-noise-free audio signal that faithfully reproduces the acoustic detail and subtle nuances of all your audio sources. High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) Transformer Under the anti-resonant cover of any Onkyo receiver, you’ll instantly notice the High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer. This transformer incorporates a huge isolated power supply design that, in tandem with our high-capacity filter capacitors, ensures you’ll always have ready the large amounts of power necessary for reproducing the wide dynamics of movie soundtracks and the detail and clarity of your music. Net-Tune—Bring a World of Music into Your Home Who doesn’t have MP3, WMA or WAV files on their computer? To really appreciate this content in dynamic surround sound, you can now connect your computer to one of our exclusive networkready receivers via a broadband router, and easily access all your music files. Simply download NetTune™ to your PC and, through the Net-Tune™ Central application, you’re ready to liberate your music files. If you’ve already upgraded to a broadband Internet connection, there are even more possibilities, like global radio programming from the fastevolving Internet radio industry. The process is simple. Hook up your networkready receiver to a router connected to your broadband modem via a highspeed Ethernet cable. Press the Net Audio button on the front of your receiver, and kick back to the best content Internet radio has to offer. You know when you choose the TX-NR901 as the driving force behind your home theater system that you’re buying into the epitome of Onkyo’s build quality—it’ll take two people to lift this receiver due to its rugged build and sturdy, anti-resonant chassis. Prepare to be stunned by the quality of its high-grade parts—powerful and highly accurate 192 kHz/24bit DACs and dual 32-bit DSP chips, used in conjunction with our exclusive Onkyo technology, deliver highly precise audio output from the latest sound formats. The latest high-definition sources are catered for through high-bandwidth inputs and outputs, and connection to compatible displays from a single component cable is facilitated through upconversion from composite and S-Video sources. Onkyo not only provides you with the highest picture quality available, through Progressive Scan, but also audiophile-quality sound from 192 kHz/24-bit D/A converters and Onkyo exclusives like Direct Digital Path technology and VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry). All of this adds up to a truly astounding sight and sound experience. ExperienCinema™—the way it was meant to be. Performing at a full 192 kHz/24-bit level of resolution, these state-of-the-art digital-to-analog converters deliver audio performance that is second to none. They boast a higher dynamic range than standard D/A converters, and are virtually resistant to clock jitter— which means you’ll enjoy the best performance possible from DVD-Audio discs and Super Audio CDs and cleaner sound from your regular DVDs and CDs. Oplus FlexScale Video Scaling Capability Exclusive Dual Direct Digital Path While HD-DVD with a native resolution of over NTSC 480p or PAL 576p is still on the drawing board, you can experience HD level 720p and 1080i via FlexScale™ video scaling capability from Oplus®. Built in to the DV-SP1000, and thus eliminating the need for costly external scalers, FlexScale™ takes NTSC 480i or PAL 576i DVDs beyond normal progressive scan players and into the HD domain by enabling 720p or 1080i output through the HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) out on the rear. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC) (DV-SP1000) From the digital signal a pure analog signal is born. VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) is an Onkyo exclusive previously found only on our high-end components. If you’re looking for the purest signal possible you’ll get it here. VLSC reduces pulse noise from the digital signal to an absolute minimum to add more depth and clarity to your CDs, movie soundtracks, and even MP3s. The DV-SP1000 incorporates the latest interface technology with the inclusion of HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) capability. This high-bandwidth interface supports not only remarkable amounts of uncompressed digital video, but audio as well. Up to 5 Gbps of data, more than twice what’s needed for a high-definition movie with surround sound, can be handled, with room for any future requirements. All this data is kept in the digital domain, as there are no D/A or A/D conversions needed—all of which ensures the highest sound and video quality available. i.LINK (IEEE1394) (DV-SP1000) The allure of surround sound DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD had previously been limited by analog-only connections. i.LINK lets you broaden your multichannel experience, while at the same time simplifying it. One wire allows you to transmit high-resolution multi-channel music in the digital—rather than the previous analog—domain, to get the DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD experience you’ve been waiting for. PAL/NTSC Veridic Progressive Scan (DV-SP1000) Most DVDs are “progressive”—meaning they produce video in complete frames. But to be compatible with all TVs, the DVD signal must be interlaced— a method where the picture is split into two fields and then blurred together to look like one. Progressive Scan, however, retrieves the original progressive signal, and on such compatible displays as HDTV, Plasma or digital TV and high-end projectors, “paints” all the visible lines on the screen in a single pass—so you’ll enjoy a scan-line-free image, with spectacularly clear color, no motion artifacts, and details so sharp they seem as if they’re etched onto the screen. Analog Devices 216 MHz/14-Bit NSV Video DAC (DV-SP1000) A crucial factor in achieving clear, pristine digital video playback is the video D/A converter in your DVD player. The state-ofthe-art 216 MHz/14-bit video DAC from Analog Devices featured in the DV-SP1000 gives you the finest artifact-free picture available. Features such as 4x oversampling and Noise Shaped Video (NSV®) dramatically reduce noise interference to the video signal, so you can enjoy even the most subtle of nuances in your favorite movies. GOLD BLACK (DV-SP1000) Unlike other DVD players that use inexpensive PC-board copper traces to transfer the digital audio signal, the DV-SP1000 employs dual high-purity, heavygauge, shielded cables to directly output digital or PCM bitstreams straight from the disc to the back panel. This protects the audio signal against potential noise from nearby microprocessors and power supplies. So if you use the optical or coaxial digital output to send multi-channel Dolby® Digital, DTS® and more to your compatible receiver, you’re starting off with the cleanest possible signal. (DV-SP1000) 12 DV-SP1000 Super Audio CD and DVD Audio— Unprecedented Clarity (DV-SP1000, DV-SP800) Super Audio CD gives you all-channel performance of up to 100 kHz frequency response and a sampling rate of 2.822 MHz— 64 times that of a regular CD. DVD-Audio gives you data-lossfree reproduction of 192 kHz/24-bit 2-channel stereo or 96 kHz/ 24-bit 6-channel surround sound and a frequency rate 4.3 times greater than an audio CD. Both give you the next step in the evolution of pristine surround sound. Video Circuit On/Off Control (DV-SP1000, DV-SP800) For the best audio quality possible, you can turn off the video circuitry when using the DV-SP1000 and DV-SP800 as audio-only players, eliminating the possibility of interference between the player’s video and audio circuitry. BNC Component Video Output (DV-SP1000) This three-jack video output gives you higher-quality single-cable connection to the latest TVs, projectors and monitors than you get from standard pin-jack connections. It also brings out the full potential of your DVDs by sending three extremely clean, separate RGB (red, green, and blue) signals to your TV. This eliminates the usual artifacts such as dot crawl and moiré (wavelike or watered appearance), and gives stunning color fidelity with virtually no discernible video noise. Picture CD Capability Insert a disc containing picture files into a compatible Onkyo DVD player and relive the memories of your last vacation, birthday or any time immortalized on digital film. These players are compatible with FUJICOLOR® CDs, Kodak® Picture CDs, and CD-R/RWs encoded with JPEG picture files, so you can bring those timeless moments to life on your viewing screen. Viewing these pictures is simple with the menu mode, which lists the pictures on the disc for fast and easy selection. Taking Audio and Video Delivery to the Next Level Even though the receiver drives your home theater, it’s still important that audio and video signals are delivered to it as effectively as possible. This is where the DV-SP1000 steps up: a rugged but sophisticated universal player that’s built to perform. The DV-SP1000’s sturdy chassis and loading mechanism are specifically designed for the smoothest delivery of your movies and music and for the minimization of vibrations. And to understand the meaning of “universal”, think DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD, as well as analog and pure digital reproduction. The inclusion of HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) and interface technology enables the transfer of large amounts (up to 5 Gbps) of audio and video data. Onkyo’s proprietary VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) and Oplus’ FlexScale™, which enables video scaling of PAL and NTSC discs from 480i/576i to 480p/576p/720p and 1080i, give this player the A/V playback edge that other makers fail to match. Such a remarkable universal player can’t go without recognition, which is why it’s THX™ certified for its superb standards in home theater audio and video playback. • THX™ Ultra Certified • DTS® and Dolby® Digital Decoders Built in • Plays DVD-Audio and Video, DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs, Super Audio CDs, MP3 CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs,Video CDs, Audio CDs, and JPEG/Picture CDs* • Oplus® FlexScale™ Video Scaling Capability • 216 MHz/14-Bit Analog Devices NSV® Video DAC • Wolfson® 192 kHz/24-Bit Audio DACs • Dual Direct Digital Path • Optical & Coaxial Digital Outputs • High Quality HDMI Audio and Video Output • 2 i.LINK (IEEE1394) Digital Ports • 2 Component Video (RCA/BNC), S-Video & Composite Video Outputs/S-Video & Composite Video Inputs • 12 V Trigger Input and IR Input/Output • Bi-Directional RS232 Port for Interface Control • Rigid Aluminum Front/Side Panel with Brass Stabilizers • PAL/NTSC Veridic Progressive Scan • On-Screen Display (English/Chinese) • Elegant Aluminum-Faced Backlit Remote Control * Discs that have not been properly finalized may only be partially playable or not playable at all. 13 Home Theater Components 2004-2005 EX_English1016.qxd 04.11.26 1:56 PM Page 14 DV-SP800 DV-SP502 THX™ Ultra Certified Universal DVD-Audio/Super Audio CD Player Universal DVD-Audio/Super Audio CD Player GOLD • DTS® and Dolby® Digital Decoders Built in • Plays DVD-Audio and Video, DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs, Super Audio CDs, MP3 CDs,WMA CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs,Video CDs, Audio CDs, and JPEG/ Picture CDs* • DivX Video Playable • PAL/NTSC Progressive Scan GOLD • 192 kHz/24-Bit Audio DACs BLACK 2004–2005 • 108 MHz/12-Bit Video DAC • Optical & Coaxial Digital Outputs • 96 kHz or 48 kHz Selectable Digital Output • Component Video, S-Video & Composite Video Outputs • Color-Coded 5.1 Multichannel Audio Outputs • On-Screen Display (English/Chinese) • Brushed Aluminum Front Panel • Full-Function RI (Remote Interactive) Remote Control Delivering the World’s Leading Digital Formats Universal players don’t get more empowering than this. Such versatility will keep your entertainment options open for years to come. DV-SP302 DVD/CD/MP3 CD Player Breaking the Traditional DVD Player Mold with DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD Who doesn’t want these formats? DVD-Audio, with its all-enveloping sound from 5.1 channels, or Super Audio CD, with a frequency response up to 100 kHz and a sampling rate of 2.822 MHz—both provide enticing musical clarity one could only previously dream about. With the DV-SP800, the choice is made—you get both. Few universal players meet the rigid standards of THX™ Ultra certification—the DV-SP800 exceeds them. And then all the other features kick in, like Onkyo’s exclusive ExperienCinema™ concept, which provides you with the finest audio and visual experience through PAL progressive scan—where video is transferred in complete frames for an image without scan lines or motion artifacts—and 192 kHz/24-bit audio DACs producing extraordinarily sharp audio. Also part of the ExperienCinema™ concept are Onkyo’s proprietary Direct Digital Path, a high-purity, heavy-gauge shielded cable, and VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry), a unique D/A conversion circuit, that independently work to eliminate pulse noise from the signal. On the video side, your DVD signal is further enhanced with lossless 108 MHz/12-bit D/A video processing. The DV-SP800 speaks for itself as a high-end, performance-focused universal player. PAL Progressive Upgrade Previous models of the DV-SP800 can be upgraded to PAL progressive scan capability. Contact your local Onkyo dealer for details. What the DV-SP302 offers in terms of capability and affordability is simply remarkable. If we focus on the features, we can see that this DVD/CD/MP3 CD player packs plenty of functionality for its affordable price. For audio, 192 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters, exclusive VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) and Direct Digital Path give you a clean, precise sound that cheaper players fail to produce. Along with progressive scan, these features make up our ExperienCinema™ concept. PAL/NTSC progressive scan produces a picture- perfect image on compatible TV screens. Sure, you might get progressive scan on similarly priced players, but are you getting the build quality and audio excellence that Onkyo brings to the market? It’s also limiting to think of the DV-SP302 as only a DVD player. It also frees MP3 files and JPEGs on CD-Rs and CD-RWs from the limitations of your PC. The bottom line is that this DVD/CD/MP3 CD player is a convenient source for those new to home theater and also provides features for those looking for an all-around entertainment experience. 15 04.11.26 1:56 PM Page 16 HT-S670 TX-8511 5.1-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package FM/AM RDS Stereo Receiver 2004–2005 BLACK •130 W/Ch, at 6 Ω, JEITA •Discrete output stage circuitry •Massive isolated power transformer •4 audio and 2 A/V inputs •Multiroom and multisource capability •30 FM/AM presets •2-mode APR (Automatic Precision Reception) •RDS (PS, PTY, RT,TP) •Brushed aluminum front panel •Full-function RI (Remote Interactive) remote control •S/N ratio: 76 dB (FM mono), 70 dB (FM stereo), 40 dB (AM) •WHD: 435 x 150 x 322 mm •8.9 kg 2004–2005 SILVER TX-8211 FM/AM RDS Stereo Receiver BLACK •100 W/Ch, at 6 Ω, JEITA •Discrete output stage circuitry •Massive isolated power transformer •4 audio inputs •30 FM/AM presets •2-mode APR •RDS (PS, PTY, RT,TP) •Brushed aluminum front panel •Full-function RI (Remote Interactive) remote control •S/N ratio: 76 dB (FM mono), 70 dB (FM stereo), 40 dB (AM) •WHD: 435 x 150 x 322 mm •8.3 kg The proliferation of home theater package systems has created a myriad of choices: some good, some not so good.
