Winner two back ran 2nd to Songbird in the BC Juv Fillies. Had the tough task of keeping the speedy Baffert filly Pretty N Cool honest in the Matron and just tired slightly from those early efforts. She is an 800k purchase earlier in the year and comes from modest bloodlines. Top connections are in play here. Love her style and wide post draw. Will give Ortiz options. He’s just ran much faster than his counterparts so far. 4th in his last start was Backsideofthemoon who came back to win and beat the #7 in here. Winner two back is a very well-bred Pletcher runner who has yet to run back. Was pressing the pace in the infamous Jess’s Dream win (offspring of Rachel Alexndra) and 2nd and 6th both came back to break their maiden next out. He’s working well for his return, has a bullet work 3 weeks ago at BEL. Always felt this one had something more. He completely botched the break when 2nd in Jan at SA and he came firing home late to just miss in a huge effort. Only one poor dirt race since when he was off slow in the next start. Really showed his true talent in last when sitting on the pace and drawing away in the lane. Shirreffs must feel he has taken the next step to enter him in this spot. Should sit the best trip in the race. Franco up for a 2nd time. Might have been a tad too close to a very fast pace in her first start at a route last time out. Has top level breeding but might actually love it when they move her to the grass. She hasn’t taken a dime of betting in either start. Might have bled in her debut as she got Lasix for the first time in last. 12 post caused her to go wide in there. Will likely be out wide again but faces three less foes. Trainer has been sneaky good at times. Improves 3rd start. Would really only take him on top here if the turf was firm. He clearly did not like the soft footing in the G1 Shadewell last time out nor did he care for it at WO back in July of ’14. He’s two for two over this turf course and both were wire to wire jobs with Leparoux aboard. Third place finisher two back won a 200k stakes at PARX and then was 2nd a nose to Messi (in this race) at 34-1 before trying the BC Turf. 6th, 7th also came back to win (69, 94 figs). Claimed five back for 25k and he’s done nothing wrong on the dirt in 3 starts since (didn’t handle grass two back). Thought he ran big for 3rd in last in an undercard of the BC at KEE. The winner is a classy sort that looked good in that spot. He beat BC Turf Sprint winner, Mangl Saturday at MNR. Moves forward. Was bet down to the 6-5 favorite in his debut that was in with many of these. He ran awkwardly and a bit green for most of the race and looked like a runner who needed a race out. In very capable hands w/ this outfit who does well with 2nd timers. The fact he took so much money in the debut says we likely didn’t see what he really is. Sire is a solid sprint influence. Should be up near the pace again. Tab tote to see if the same action shows here. Grade 2 in just her second career start and that runner-up finish was in a good field. 4th place finisher in that race was I’m a Chatterbox. 2nd in last behind Chide but she really had no chance. They went so slow early and Chide was up near that early pace and got an opening on the rail to kick through in the lane. It should serve as a good prep for this for both runners. Taken a lot of action in every start. Think we haven’t seen her best effort yet. Couldn’t be bred much better. 3rd dam is a sibling to a couple of colts who ran 3rd in the Ky Derby, Prince of Thieves and Timber Country, as well as many other stakes winners (some turf stakes winners). Winner of the debut took the 75k Sunday Silence on the grass in next start. Ran well in what is turning out to be a strong running of the El Joven at Retama. Amoss runners have been live everywhere. Will be able to save ground here. Slight lean. Worthy favorite here based on his sensational 2 yr campaign. Winner of the prestigious Arlington Million three starts back. Might have been best at KEE two back but the race was just too short. No disgrace in his 5th place finish to Found and Golden Horn, who came in off of a win in the Arc de Triomphe. Big rider add for this in getting Smith for the first time and his late close style should fit Smith perfectly. Almost always brings his A game. Trainer has 2 wins and 6 in the money in last 7 starts on this short rest for this ownership. Her backbreeding says routing is fine. In the female tree there is Banshee Breeze, who won 2.8M routing (took 5 G1’s routing, was 2nd in the ’98 Ky Oaks). MSW she exits was strong race (top 2 came from MSW races at KEE). 1 NICARADALIC ROCKS Just a 10k purchase in Sep ’14 so this MD-bred gelding is outrunning his breeding, which is normal for a Desormeaux runner. Top 3 were well clear of the rest last time out. Finished in 25.2. Only other mile on that card went 1:41.3 and finished in 27.2. Hasn’t run a bad race on the dirt. Well-spotted for these conditions. Sharp worktab for this. 2 HEED TO SPEED First off the claim for Peter Miller, who is 24% on that angle. He’s had two claims for this ownership and they ran 1st and 2nd in their 1st off the claim (but both were claimed out of wins). Sire was all route but dam was mainly a cheap sprinter. Miller put three SLR moves into her and a “go to” rider is up. Would expect major improvement in here. 4 MISHEGAS Proved the 33-1 upset win two back was not a fluke when he ran 3rd at 6-1 last out. He made another good late move there as the winner was allowed to go slow early in a wire to wire effort. 4th place finisher came back to win for 25k NW2L at 3-5 for O’Neill. 5th place finisher ran 2nd at 29-1 in opt clm 50k. Might get a decent pace to close into. She was 2nd to Bracelet in her 3rd start. That one went on to win 3 of her next 4 starts including the G1 Irish Oaks. Moved to D’Amato before her last start which was so bad it can’t be believed. Dam is a full to 3x Group 1 winner, Danehill Dancer (turf overseas). Working sharply. Expect a much better effort. 1 BAR CAR Exits a strong race for the level. The winner was dropping in from 20k opt clm. 3rd place finisher came back to run 2nd at 9-1 when in with straight 16k claimers. All 8 of her on the board finishes have come on regular dirt. Gets a big rider change to Nakatani. Comes in with a fast 46.4 bullet work over this track. Will be saving ground from the rail. 12 MARGARET REAY Has nibbled so far as she is 5 for 7 in the money on the turf and that includes a runner-up effort to the great turf filly, Lady Eli, at 50-1 in the G3 Ms Grillo. Blinkers went on last time out and she showed very good speed but was disappointing not being able to hold off the 3-1 winner. 12 post dampers some enthusiasm but she’s the one to beat. 3 SEEK SAFE HARBOR Won at 5-1 two starts back in a game effort when she pressed early and was game late. Went off at 10-1 in last and broke poorly and never really got into the race. She has won 2 of her 3 starts over this track (only loss was last time out). She normally tracks up near the pace and that will be a good spot to be in here. Will be an overlay. She exits a strong race. Three runners came right back to win from that race. 1st, 2nd and 7th won back with 82, 91 and 68 Beyer figs. Runner-up also ran 3 back in the G1 Del Mar Oaks. Love the Nureyev and El Prado cross for the turf. Price should be decent. 9 PATRIOTIC DIAMOND Had a rough start and trip in her debut but finished much better than the winner which is why she was bet so heavily in her 2nd start, in the Generous Portion. Broke poorly in the Golden State and was wide but finished strongly for 3rd. Winner looks like a superstar after she has won both of her starts by daylight. Worked quickly with Bejarano up. 4 PEGGY SUE’S LOOSE Comes in off of back to back wins on the turf and it coincides with the addition of Desormeaux. She was very game in her last win when off at 10-1. Desormeaux lost his whip late. Been in the exacta in 2 of 4 on the turf here at Del Mar. Desormeaux rarely rides for this outfit but has won 4 of 6 starts for the trainer. Just one work since her last. 6 HALO DARLIN Back to the winning rider from the debut, Tyler Baze. She crushed in that race and the connections felt she deserved a shot at Songbird in the G1 in her 2nd start. She didn’t run there and had an awful trip in the Golden State when she broke slow and was 5 and 6 wide through the entire race. Bullet work in the holster since last. Bet we see more. Winner of the prestigious Arlington Million three starts back. Might have been best at KEE two back but the race was just too short. No disgrace in his 5th place finish to Found and Golden Horn. The runner-up came in off of a win in the Arc de Triomphe. Big rider add for this. Rock solid. 7 DISCREETLYHUMORME Might be a license to drop off of the bad stumble in last. Notice the betting on him when off as the 2nd choice at 5-2. He was right with the pace when he went down there. Trainer Glatt is having a superb meet with 20% winners and goes to his top call rider for this. He has a steady stream of drills. Have to a decent runner in Funny Gal. Fits. 1 CLASS LEADER Might be a bit of stretch since he doesn’t have the resume that some in here do. However, he tried the turf for the first time last out and ran well at 11-1. The breeding is all turf. Dam was 6 for 12 ($485k) on the grass. Sib to Student Council who won 1.5M. Strong worktab at SA for this. Might be worth an addition on exotics tickets in here. 5 AND THEN SOME Very logical player on the class drop for this. He has nibbled thus far with better and really outran his odds in the first two starts on dirt. Runner-up in his second start came back to win a MSW by 14 lengths with an 81 Beyer. Last place finisher in that race won a MSW on the turf at 5-1 next out. Blinkers on. Good works. Talamo takes the call.
