The Hunger in America 2014 study completed by Feeding
America estimates that the Food Bank is now providing emergency
food for an estimated 59,200 different people in any given
week. Additionally:
 50% of those served by the Food Bank are children and
seniors
 55% of households include at least one adult who has not
been employed within the last year
 21% of households include grandparents who have
responsibility for grandchildren
 77% of households report having to choose between paying
for medicine or groceries.
 Sadly, food insecurity remains a
serious problem in North Carolina. More than 651,000 people struggle
to access nutritious and adequate amounts of food necessary for an
active and healthy life.
The North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Programs (NC GAL) has launched a food drive to collect plastic
jars of peanut butter and jelly across the state and deliver them to the closest food bank from the
Guardian ad Litem office. This is the first project of this kind the NC GAL programs have undertaken.
Distribution of the collected peanut butter and jelly will occur during the week of Dr. Martin Luther
King’s birthday in 2017. When asked why the food drive is for peanut butter and jelly, organizers stated,
“Peanut butter is something all food banks need. We added the collection of jelly because we were all
once children, and we fondly remember peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as a staple of a happy
childhood. We believe that our peanut butter and jelly drive will help us mobilize and engage our
neighbors, friends and community groups to help us in getting these items to food banks and will also
give our program a higher profile across the state.”
If your agency or group would like to help support the Peanut Butter and Jelly Campaign, please let a
Guardian ad Litem staff member know. This is a great service project and collaboration opportunity for
all members of Judicial District #1.
Thank you for your support!!!
