Senate approves George’s War of 1812 license plate bill
LANSING—Legislation sponsored by state Sen. Tom George, M.D. to establish a
fundraising license plate recognizing the bicentennial of the War of 1812 was
approved Wednesday by the Michigan Senate.
“In 2012 we will be observing the 200th anniversary of the war, which began with the
capture of Mackinac Island by British forces,” said George, R-Kalamazoo. “As one
of the battlegrounds of the conflict, Michigan will feature prominently in its
remembrance and benefit from the cultural tourism that will result.”
The Battle of Mackinac Island was the first land battle of the War of 1812. Early on
the morning of July 17 the British landed on Mackinac Island and captured Fort
Mackinac. Subsequent engagements occurred near Monroe and Detroit (resulting in
the surrender of Detroit to the British).
“The Mackinac Island State Park is one of our state’s greatest treasures,” said Sen.

Senate Bill 682 will create the fundraising license plate and establish the Mackinac

Island State Park Commission Fund to manage the money from the sale of the plate.
“A special license plate will help bring attention to Michigan’s role in this war, while
at the same time raising funds to support our historic sites,” said George, past
president of the Historical Society of Michigan. “As our state continues to struggle
with financial resources, we can help preserve our cultural heritage by giving our
residents the option to buy this commemorative license plate.”
SB 682 now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.
