andprocesses.Thisinherentcomplexityis
common,forexample,tosuchsectorsas
industry,government,thefinancialsector
andpublicutilitiessuchasprovidersof
waterandelectricity,amongothers.The
morecomplexthosesystemsare,the
greatertheneedforsophisticated
technologiestomanagethem.TheMSc
TrackinControlEngineeringfocusesonthe
analysisanddesignofreliable,highperformancemeasurementandcontrol
strategiesforawidevarietyoftechnological
dynamicprocesses.
Intheprogramme,youwillstudythe
developmentandapplicationofsystemand
controlengineeringconceptsinmechanical
engineeringproblems,suchashighprecisionmotioncontrolsystems
(mechatronics,roboticsandmicrosystems),
intheareaofindustrialprocesses
(petrochemicalindustry,foodprocessing
industry,powerplants),windenergy,
robotics,transportationnetworks,smart
physicalsystems,systemsbiologyor
automotiveresearch.
Theprogrammebringstogetherissuesin
physicalmodelling,experimentdesign,
signalanalysisandestimation,modelbasedcontroldesignandoptimisation,
hardwareandsoftwareaspects,allfor
highlycomplexsystemsofdifferentnatures,
suchaslinear,nonlinear,hybridand
embeddedsystems,rangingfromsmall
scalemicrosystemstolargescaleindustrial
plants.
Theprogrammebearsastrong
resemblancetotheMScprogramme
SystemsandControl.ButwhereSystems
andControltakesthetechnologicalaspects
ofsystemsandcontrolengineeringasits
startingpoint,theControlEngineeringtrack
focusesonmechanicalengineering.Thus
SystemsandControlapproachesthe
subjectfromitsgenericthemes(system
theory,controltheory,signalanalysis).The
highlymultidisciplinarynatureofControl
Engineeringisclearlydemonstratedby
virtueofthediversityoffieldsinwhich
systemsandcontrolengineering
applicationsplayacentralrole.
Themostimportantaspectsofcontrol
engineeringarereflectedinthe
compulsorypartoftheprogramme,
whichofferslecturesonfundamental
techniquesforphysicalandexperimental
modellingofdynamicalsystemsaswell
asonmodernapproachesto
optimisation-basedcontrollersynthesis
forcomplexmultivariablesystems.In
additiontolectures,practicaltrainingis
providedinlabprojectswhichaddress
thetechnicalaspectsofcontrolsystem
implementation.Theintroductoryproject
servestorefreshbasiccontrol
techniquesfromBSclevelbyworkingon
arealphysicalsystem,whilethe
integrationprojectattheendofthefirst
yearaimsattheintegrationoftheoretical
issuesaspresentedinthetrack’s
compulsorycoursesbyapplyingthemto
oneofthelaboratorydevices.The
programme’selectivepartconsistsof
threeblocks,systems&controlcourses,
mechanicalengineeringcoursesandfree
electives.Withinthesystems&control
electivesstudentshavevarious
specializationoptionsinone
ormoreof
theprogrammeprofiles.Mechanical
engineeringelectivesgivesthestudenta
solid
ControlEngineeringhasnoformal
specialisations,butstudentschoose
courses,worth9EC,fromamongeight
focusprofiles:
MechanicalSystemscovers
subjectsasengineeringdynamics,
multibodydynamics,mechatronics,
microsystems,measurementsand
design.
Processesfocusesoncomplex
chemicalorindustrialprocesses
(suchasenergysystemsorpower
plants)
Automotiveaimsattackling
environmental,economicaland
safetyissues,developing
technologiesbasedontheinterplay
betweenvehicledynamics,sensing
andcontrol.Globalchassiscontrol,
faulttolerantdrive-by-wiresystems
andsmartenergymanagement
systemsarethemainareasof
research.
Roboticscoversnonlinearmodelbasedcontrol,adaptivecontrol,
machinelearning,andother
techniquesformanipulators,mobile
leggedandwheeledrobotsand
distributedroboticsystems.
WindEnergyisdevotedtothe
designoffeedbackcontrollersfor
windturbinesandwindfarms.
Moreover,control-oriented
modellingoftheselarge-scale
mechanicalsystemsisconsidered.
Transportationnetworksdeals
withintelligenttransportation
systems,railwayoperations,traffic
flowmodeling,andurbanand
freewaytrafficmanagement.
SmartPhysicalSystems.Control
engineeringisplayingan
increasinglyimportantroleinthe
developmentofnewand/or
improvedinstrumentsandmaterials
tostudy/influencephysical
phenomena.E.g.toimprovethe
resolutionofimagestakenwithhigh
performancemicroscopes,the
imageformationshouldbetreated
asafeedbackcontrolproblem
insteadofafilteringproblemalone,
asisclassicallydone.Studyingand
masteringthenewdevelopmentsin
thisexcitingfieldofresearchisthe
goalinthisspecialisation.
SystemsandControl
Theoryplacesaparticular
emphasisonthefundamentalsin
SystemsandControl,withan
explicitorientationtowards
research.
TheMScprogrammeinSystemsandControlisatwo-yearcurriculumoflecturesandassignments.Thecoursesectionconsistsofa
compulsorypart,anelectivepartinwhichmodulesarechosenfromalistofsystemsandcontrolmodules,andafreelyselectedpartchosen
inconsultationwiththeMSccoordinatorand/ortheMScthesissupervisor.Withintheelectivecoursesstudentshavevariousspecialization
options,forinstancemotionandvibrationcontrol,automotivecontrol,nonlinearcontrol,processcontrol,hybridsystems,andembedded
systems.Theprogrammeincludesanoptionalinternshipofthreemonths,whichwillbepartoftheMasterthesisproject.

SystemsandControl(DCSC)orwith

Whenthetimearrivedformetostart
orientatingonamasterthesisproject,I
quicklydecidedthatIwouldliketogoto
Francetodosomethinginthe
automotivecontrolarea.Ispoketoalot
ofprofessorsandstaffmembersof
DCSCwithpossibleconnectionsthere,
andthroughProfessorHolwegIwas
introducedwiththepeopleofthe
AutomotiveDevelopmentCenterSensor
IntegrationinSt-Cyr-sur-Loire.IntotalI
stayedfor10monthsdoingaresearch
projectbutatthesametime,workingon
projectsthatcouldbeuseddirectlyinthe
companysuchasthedevelopmentof
simulationtools.Ittaughtmealotof
thingsnotonlyprofessionallyintermsof
workingwithclientsandexploringnew
technologies,understandingthe
applicationsoftheproduct,thesensor
bearingbutalsopersonally,because
livinginFrance,speakingFrench
everydayandespeciallyexperiencingthe
realFrenchculturewasanamazing
experience!IamveryhappythatIgot
thisopportunitythroughthenetworkof
DCSCbecauseitwasaverygood
preparationforstartingmyprofessional
career.Itevenpleasedmesomuchin
France,thatIfindmyselfworkingand
livingherenow!
