Over the last two decades our cinemas
have been teeming with adaptations
of comic books, video games and,
interestingly, toys. Innocent dolls and
knick-knacks, originally destined for kids’
bedrooms, are being propelled onto the
big screen where their zeal is developed
into blockbuster material. The fate of
these products can waver. The Lego
Movie comfortably captured the hearts
of young and older audiences, whereas
Battleship struggled to make an impact.
The commercial appeal of adapting
these toys into films is down to the
simplicity of the product: trust in
the creation, and the love people
have for it, and the rest will follow.
DreamWorks have capitalized on this
premise by bringing furry, upcombed
hair to Hollywood audiences.
Trolls is the latest animation that offers
children a multicoloured, sing-along,
feel-good adventure. The story follows
Poppy (Anna Kendrick), the happiest
Troll ever born. After the Bergens invade
Troll Village, Poppy and the overlycautious, curmudgeonly Branch (Justin
Timberlake) set off on a journey to
rescue Poppy's friends. Their mission is
full of adventure and mishaps, as this
"... a multicoloured,
sing-along,
feel-good adventure."
mismatched duo try to tolerate each
other long enough to get the job done.
The most striking trait of Trolls is its
endless array of vibrant colours. There
are times when the lively and bright
palette becomes almost hypnotic. At first
the style is jarring, but once the story
picks up the pace the outlandish visuals
are gradually accepted as a by-product
of the trolls’ habitat. Praise should be
given to directors Walt Dohrn and Mike
Mitchell for creating such a dynamic
world. The environment is utterly unreal
but the story and characters make
complete sense within it, and this in
turn makes you accept the world itself.
The cast list boasts an impressive
roll call: Kendrick and Timberlake are
partnered with a variety of kooky
characters voiced by fan favourites
such as Zooey Deschanel, Christine
Baranski, Russell Brand, Gwen Stefani
and John Cleese. The chemistry
between the group moves between
affectionate, sarcastic and inviting;
especially when they burst into song.
Karaoke-style songs are popular in
kids’ movies and Trolls capitalizes on
this to good effect. Some of the songs
written by Timberlake will likely become
firm favourites of younger viewers, but
older audiences will be more taken
with classics such as ‘Celebration’
and ‘Hello’ – this is one of the most
attractive elements of the movie.
Despite the movie’s juvenile sensibilities,
the action, jokes and drama make
an effort to engage with adults. The
youngsters will rave over the critters
and the visuals, while parents will
appreciate the film’s nostalgic efforts.
The narrative itself is relatively
straightforward, as the story doesn’t
go off the beaten track while telling
its cheerful tale. But that’s of little
importance when the focus is on the
silly charm of the film’s shiny creatures.
Quirkiness thrives in Trolls, as characters
take advantage of their fantastical
attributes, such as their ostentatious
whipping hair. Similar to movies such as
Shrek, Trolls has a fascinating world that
encourages bombastic behaviour and is
full of wondrous environs. This is a plastic
figurine that has reached new heights.

Doctor Strange follows the trials and
tribulations of its titular character, one
of the most respected and esteemed
surgeons on the planet. Strange
(Benedict Cumberbatch) is pure
arrogance and bravado; what makes
him even more irksome to those that
like (and loathe) him, is the fact that
he really is as talented as he says he
is. But a brutal car crash leaves him
a shell of a man – particularly when
he learns that his hands have been
irreparably damaged. Refusing to accept
his fate, he looks everywhere for a
logical solution. Once he’s ruled out all
the logical solutions, he turns to a less
common solution... After proving he’s
willing to trust in something beyond
his understanding, Strange is accepted
into a secret order led by a mystic
teacher known only as The Ancient One
“... some of the most
eye-popping visuals
since Inception."
(Tilda Swinton, in full-on otherworldly
mode). With the help of her most senior
disciples, Strange begins to find the
means to wield powers that are beyond
imagination. But (for there must always
be a ‘but’ at this point in a tale), there are
dark forces rising in the form of Kaecilius
(Mads Mikkelsen), a previous disciple of
The Ancient One. And behind Kaecilius
lurks a powerful puppeteer…
Director Scott Derrickson had a difficult
task with Strange, as he has similar
characteristics (and a very similar
character trajectory) to Tony Stark,
aka Iron Man. But in the hands of
Cumberbatch and Derrickson, Strange’s
particular brand of arrogance, and the
manner of his self-actualization, is very
much his own.
Ably abetting Cumberbatch are
Mikkelsen, Swinton, Ejiofor and Wong.
All are fascinating, but Swinton is the
standout: playing beings beyond our
comprehension is very much her thing
at this point (see Constantine, Orlando
and Only Lovers Left Alive for just a small
sampling of this fact).
This leaves me with just enough space
to credit the film’s other main star: the
special effects team. As Strange learns
how to battle Kaecilius and harness his
powers, he finds himself dealing with a
very Escher-esque mirror universe, which
results in some of the most eye-popping
visuals since Inception.

pieces of music elegantly put together,
then the Danish singer Agnes Obel’s
new album Citizen of Glass is a must.
Peaceful, calming music can, on occasion,
fall into the trap of being overlong
and weightless – failing to make any
statement, and seemingly without
purpose. This couldn’t be further from the
truth with Obel’s new album. Her intricately
threaded vocals, weaving around strings
and percussion instruments, possess
real charm and character, and result
in wonderful, soul-searching music.
