Parkmont Elementary School Website - http://www.fremont.k12.ca.us/parkmont Month: FEBRUARY 2015 Edition:06 Principal's Message 02/13/15 Hello Parkmont Community, It is really hard to believe that we are now in the last half of the school year. Our Parkmont students consistently study hard and earn excellent grades while also participating in many worthwhile extra-curricular activities. In particular, it has been fun to watch our girls and boys basketball teams play and compete against our other attendance area schools. Thanks to our PTA and other organizations like Ohlone College, we also have many on-site after school programs. We also have other family-oriented events like Family Math, Science, and Reading nights as well. It is great to be part of such a thriving, inviting school community. Thanks for your support of your children's education and of our school. We would like to welcome Cathy Ytuarte as Parkmont's newest team member. You will see her in our front office between 10 AM and 1 PM every day. Please stop by and give her a warm welcome when you get a chance. Caught Working Hard Raffle Winners There were so many students who were Caught Working Hard over the past 6 weeks. At our first assembly on February 2nd we awarded several raffle prizes. These raffle prizes are an additional way to say THANK YOU for working hard, as well as our way to continuously foster the Growth Mindset. Really, the students have already “won” by earning their Parkmont wristband, but more importantly, being acknowledged for their hard work by their teachers. Keep up the great work! Program Improvement Update Fremont Unified School District was identified as a Program Improvement (PI) District because we have not demonstrated sufficient academic achievement for all students. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965, requires the California Department of Education to annually review the student academic performance in English‐language arts and mathematics of each district that receives Title I funds. A district is identified as PI if it fails to meet yearly student performance goals, known as Adequate Yearly Progress, for two consecutive years. Because there was no testing at the elementary and junior high levels in English‐ language arts and math, the district was not able to move out of Program Improvement last year. Fremont Unified is fortunate to have capable and caring staff and committed parents. By working together we will find ways to better meet the needs of every Fremont student. We continue to demonstrate growth and will work to demonstrate this growth for all subgroups and students so our district will no longer be a Program Improvement district. Measure K Oversight Committee In November 2010, the voters of Fremont approved a local funding measure, Measure K, an annual tax of $53 per parcel that will generate approximately $3.2 million annually for five (5) years. Measure K includes a requirement that Fremont Unified School District establish a Citizen’s Oversight Committee to provide independent oversight to ensure that the Measure K revenue received by the Fremont Unified School District is spent in accordance with the commitment made to the voters of Fremont.
