INTRODUCTION
Life is full of danger and uncertainty. We see news reports almost daily about violence and terrorism. And sometimes it feels like faith is under siege. 2015 was the
worst year in modern history for Christian persecution. More than 7,100 Christians
were killed for faith-related reasons; 2,400 churches were damaged or destroyed.
Surrounded by uncertainty, it’s difficult not to be afraid. But Jesus offers us another
option.
SHARE
1. Do you have a phobia? If so, what is it?
2. Do you ever feel like Christianity is under attack in our nation? If so, how
does that stretch your faith in God?
3. Review the sermon notes and discuss any points that stand out for you.
4. How has fearfully living “behind closed doors” affected our mission and the
advancement of God’s redemptive purpose?
5. How does “bad fear” affect a person’s life?
6. Why is it true that when you “confront your fears” you grow?
STUDY
1. Read Proverbs 1:7 (Matthew 10:28). We’ve already agreed that to fear
God is a good fear. How would you explain what this means to someone?
2. According to Provers 14:2, what price does a person pay who does not
fear the Lord?
3. Proverbs, as you know, is overflowing with wisdom. Read the following
and discuss: Proverbs 144:6; 15:16, 33; 16:6; 19:23; 23:17; 29:25; 31:30
4. Read Matthew 10:28–31. What are some reasons it can be difficult for us
to live as though God values us so much that he’s numbered the hairs on
our heads?
5. Read Luke 9:23. Think of a person or group that views or treats you unfairly because of your faith. What would it look like for you to “deny yourself,
take up your cross, and follow Jesus” in the way you respond to that person or group? What would it look like for the church?
SUPPORT
Talk about something—culturally, politically, professionally, or relationally—that
makes you afraid. What is one thing you can do this week to replace fear with faith
in your heavenly Father? What can this group do to support you?
MOVING FORWARD
Uncertainty is for certain. It’s unavoidable. It’s beyond your control. But living in
fear is optional. Remember that Jesus—your Savior—was born into, lived through,
and walked into the jaws of uncertainty. A world too often defined by violence, arrested and crucified him . . . and then God raised him from the dead. That is the
cornerstone of our faith. That’s why living in fear is optional.
Kobon Ministry in Papua New Guinea: We thank the Lord that we received a cell phone message from
Timothy that he is on his way back from the provincial capital but is stranded on the other side of a big river that
he cannot cross because of torrential rain. Please pray for his safe return.
This week please pray for the Haruai Living Word School at Goimbam, for teacher Morris Woneye, and for all the
students.

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked
where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among
them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed
them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the
Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent
me, even so I am sending you.”22 And when he had said this, he breathed on
them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. John 20: 19-22

1. How did the disciples respond? Why? Where was their focus? (v.19a.)
Our Savior is braver than hell, stronger than steel, tougher than nails, and
more powerful than death.
2. Only a resurrected Jesus could shift our focus from death to life. (19b.-20)
 It was a game changer for the disciples.
 Jesus: “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather
fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:28
 Uncertainty is for certain. It’s unavoidable. It’s beyond our control. But living
in fear is optional.
He too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of
him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all
their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. Hebrews 2:14-15
3. How did the disciples’ respond? (v.21-22)
Simon Peter was crucified upside down. Andrew and Philip and Thaddaeus
and Simon the Canaanite were scourged then crucified. James (son of Zebedee,
AKA James the Greater) was beheaded. Bartholomew was skinned alive and then
beheaded. Thomas was run through with a spear. Matthew was stabbed in the back.
James, Jesus’ brother, was beaten and stoned, and then from repeated blows
to the head with a club. John was the only one of the original disciples not to die a
violent death. [Judas committed suicide]
